There is an "official/traditional" way to do most things. For example... rules to a sports game. Does everyone follow them? Of course not. People who consider themselves corset fanatics have rules about what "counts" as a real corset (this varies too). I just wondered if there were guidelines as to what constitutes BDSM as an actual lifestyle? Or are there really none?
Maybe I have just met some really strict BDSM folk lol. They seemed to be very set in rules and proper ways to be a dom and sub etc. It's good to know that at least the people of Eden are not as close minded!

There really is none. If you are a leatherman, you might follow some of the Old Guard traditions, but even those vary greatly from city to city. If you are a fan of Gor, you would follow those ideals. Communities define protocols. Your community may be a city full of people or it may be the people in your bedroom.
Also, remember that not everyone has a power exchange dynamic and that does not make their relationship less than someone who is in an D/s relationship.
BDSM is a catch all phrase for what it is that we do. It covers everythingkinky. Not just power dynamics.
