As for the publishers and A-A books, there is a commercial mindset. The darker, the better. The more maddening, the better. Lori and I are trying to demolish that mindset.

Hopeless, this is the sensuality coach in me speaking. Yes, I think you are reading your husband right. He's probably a little bit intimidated and scared. Scared less that he might hurt you but more that he may not perform up to your standards. One of the things that turn men on the most is knowing that he can please you. Everytime you show up with a new gizmo, he hears not that he makes you feel safe and loved enough to bring this side out in you, but rather that you need more. He's not enough.

So, here's my suggestion. Go slow and get back to great, hot basic sex. Get his confidence up again and let him start talking about his fantasies. What he wants. You're the more adventurous one, so you'll be more comfortable complying. Start there and then begin to introduce the idea of basic kink.

Talking is key. You have to make him feel as safe as he makes you feel.

What a lovely description! I think the making your work realistic so that the reader can relate is key to all good fiction, but especially good erotica. Pushing all African American fiction into the "urban fiction" category is convenient, but not at all accurate in some cases.

Wow, that is a very nice thing to say. and it makes sense, too. I feel the same way about Cleis books unveiling the wide range of sexual experience, but I was not sure how to articulate it.

It's fun that we are talking about the conservative mindset. Here we are supposedly on the brink of a renaissance in this country, but nothing has changed. Especially in our society or in how we treat each other. I guess bec I've been a journalist, a case worker, a teacher in the prison system, and now a teacher. I see how this change is being resisted. We as writers and sexual adventurers have to change it from the bottom up. With our deeds, our words, our stories, our lives.

I don't know if Lori agrees with this.

I was having a conversation with some folks about the difference between a "thought leader" and an "opinion leader." The first is the innovator, who can take an idea and bring it to fruition. The latter has the power to make a decision about what's happening in society and have the power to influence others. (They are not exclusive.) I agree with Cole. I think the Cole and Lori and the other writers are in a unique, especially as A-A writers, to "push" the public into thinking differently about erotica, especially among African Americans.

How much is conservative motivation, though, and how much is based on looking for that magic money-making formula? Scooby Doo... Son of Scooby Doo ... Scooby Doo Returns... Scooby Doo Does Dallas... So few new things ever make it to the market, it seems because recycling seems "safer."

I totally agree with you. And that's largely why I decided to step back into the erotica game. To teach, to mentor, to be a friend and give voice to those who are reluctant to speak their concerns. My work may not showcase the dark and twisted but light and crooked can be painful and paralyzing too!

That's why it thrills me so much to see intellect and compassion trying to bust through all the thug love! Love is the key. We need to preach that just as loud and strong as we preach all the other issues of the day.

I think when it comes to erotica, at least in the last decade, we've seen a huge shift in its accessibility and acceptability. When I started writing romance fiction over a decade ago, the genre boundaries were clearly drawn between romance and erotica. Now erotica is not only a budding force of its own, but is creeping into other genres as well. Perhaps the trend in urban fiction-- meaning the grittier, primarily African American fiction-- will evolve as well to allow for a wider range of ideas.

That's a really interesting point. It would be fascinating to read and compare your early work to the work you do today.

I think some young adult writers feel as if they don't have enough experience to write, that they need to be older before they should try to contribute anything. What would you say to those that feel they are too young to write?

That's a very insightful question. What fuels your need for all of the toys? Yes, basic can get boring, but if it's never enough, then you have to ask yourself. Why.
