I actually like both...it just depends on the circumstance...for a collection, I usually like it if they are all centered around something I am interested in but I have also read collections of erotica that are far from what I normally like and can find something to enjoy but not that really good...get you there feeling like I can when it's one on spanking or lesbians or the two combined *G
As for a novel...I want to get into the characters and their lives and then see how the sex comes in....but if I don't relate to the characters then I have problems with the sex in a longer piece or novel

Hi Lindsay!

I'm so glad you liked Bondage on a Budget. It was an unusual pitch to my publisher, Masquerade. Part sex stories, very small part DIY advice. I have always been really pleased with that one.

Well, I know a certain editor who would be interested at a certain publishing house! (lol!)

We haven't seen any, but it would be neat to see you put a new one together (we'd buy it!)

Hello. Didn't read the book, (might pick it up at some point) but the idea of writing erotica somewhat fascinates me. I'm a horror junkie myself, but something about erotics seems even more so forbidden and tantalizing than just a blood and ... more
Sexis has a few articles up right now about writing erotica (Erotica 101).
Hope this link works:

link

I've been writing erotica for more than two decades. (Can you believe it? Suddenly, I feel all, um, mature.)
When I started writing, the world was different. No really. For starters, there was no internet. So I'd go to the bookstore, buy magazines I liked, write stories, and submit the pieces via snail mail. Then I'd wait forever for a response.

Now, everything is electronic and quick.

I am inspired by fill-in-the-blank. I am a voracious voyeur, and I like to say that I see sex wherever I go.

Hints: Read a lot. Decide whether or not you find erotica appealing. Then just give it a go! Don't worry about whether you're good or not. I always say that there is at least one reader for every story. You'll connect with someone. You just need to find the someone!

XXX,
Alison

Hi Goth, and welcome!

Actually, erotica and horror have something in common-- they both inspire a kind of visceral gut reaction.

Perhaps Alison would like to answer your questions about writing erotica?

Violet Blue has a guide to Sex Toys, but I'm not sure if there is any fiction in it like some of her other guides.

Hi Alison! I, too, love your writing!

I saw those articles and have them bookmarked. At the moment I write all nonfiction, but find erotica a bit tempting. Not sure I could do fiction, but possibly putting some fantasies down on paper could be fun.

I remember Sex Toy Tales! It was the first Down There Press book I ever bought.

Alison,
I am curious about how you arrange the stories. Is it sort of like arranging a dance card? How do you balance what's hot and what's not?

Awesome, thanks. At least I do read a lot, so maybe I can try my hand at this.

Woo, looks like I'm walking in a bit late. Unfortunately I haven't read the book yet, but I am interested in what it takes to write erotica. I'll have to hurry and catch up!

Hmmm. I think I wrote some of the fiction for her Strap-On Guide and the G-Spot Guide. I love when she puts stories with the how-tos!

Oh, thanks! You're lovely!

I think writing down your fantasies is really powerful. I started by writing down *other* people's fantasies—as gifts for my friends. But I think if you can search and discover what really turns you on, you'll write something magical.

Arranging stories is one of the best parts of putting together an anthology. So far, I've edited 50 full-length anthos (most recently, Alison's Wonderland), and the juggling never gets old. I love trying to build a mood with stories—a fast one, a slow one, a dark one, a light one. I'm addicted.

Recently, I've been putting together bite-sized e-book anthologies. They can be more difficult than the longer ones! If you only have five stories to work with, you don't necessarily have a lot of buffers. So you can end up with hardcore anal right next to gang bang at the cocktail party—when in a longer book, you might put something short and poetic in between the two.

See? That was a peek inside my dirty mind. I hope you enjoyed the trip.

I just wanted to chime in and say that erotica is such a personal genre, that a lot of "fiction" is really creative nonfiction. I do believe Alison has put out a couple of anthologies of true-- or mostly true-- stories, including Pleasure Bound!
