I wouldn't want to but maybe if I was desperate.
Would you go dumpster diving?

Sure. I'd definitely clean it first, but you'd be surprised what people throw away. I don't live in a nice area, but people throw out surprisingly nice things -- working 5' speakers, TVs, solid couches, etc

I am wary of bedbugs and other critters, so I don't want used upholstery. I have taken chairs and tables, though. I also leave stuff in the alley for others when I move. It goes quickly.

I've found a lot of cool stuff at the curb, especially around the first of the month when people are in a hurry to move.

So, you see a couple of average every day neighbors come out of their apartment or house and put a decent couch out to the curb or by the dumpster. You think it's kinda neat looking. Would you go out and grab it?

Has anyone ever done this? Find something cool? Did you have to get shots after finding something you didn't want in a slightly used chair you found? less

I guess

I used to live on the side of a ritzy condo when I was little and I used to rummage though their garbage all the time. I haven't done it lately though. But my boyfriend did the other day.

I'm kind of weird about absorbent furniture (so probably no on the couch unless I knew the neighbors well) but something non-porous definitely!

I accidently left a pair of super cute shoes in a couch we were dumping, and so I had to go dumpster diving to get it out. Luckily the dumpster was mostly empty and I could climb out bu using the couch. So yes, I would go dumpster diving if it was worth it.

Depends

Only if.... It was in good condition, didn't smell and I could be comfortable on it.... SURE THING. I've picked up many other things that way. What's one persons junk is anthers treasure!

1)depends on the weather. If I know it's been there for a few days and the temperatures have been under -20 during that time, it killed pretty much everything alive on it.
2)bedbugs.
3)I'm serious I'm dead scared of them.
4)I'd have to have some place where I can restore and inspect it before it gets in my home.

Too many risk factors!

Maybe.

Couch? no way. . . what about bedbugs?

Not necessarily a couch, but I scored a great set of 4 solid wood chairs that someone left by the dumpster. They were easy to clean
