Would you go dumpster diving?

One insane woman threw out her kid's harry potter collection and made a HUGE scene out of it when I was around 17. This included figurines and more. she left them in a huge bag next to the dumpster. I came to the rescue and nursed all that harry potter stuff back to health :3

If it was a couch or chair, you can always get a steam cleaner to it and thoroughly clean it before you set on it or get some couch covers.

Yes, as long as it didn't rain. Actually, I've gotten a good bit of curb side furniture with 'free' signs in my life time. I wouldn't call that 'dumpster diving' because I've done that a few times too, and there is actual going and a dumpster and digging stuff out(I did it in a Library dumpster after I missed a book sale, got tons of books, and did it outside an office supply store and got a hell of a ton of computer parts, it rocked).

The only thing I'd advise if being cautious with couches, beds, and other furniture that people would 'sleep on' for bed bugs. They fucking suck, never had them, but have known people who have ended up with them.

I would have to see an open safe, full of gold bars, laying in that dumpster to consider it. You know, that "decent couch" MAY have been infested with lice, or bedbugs. It may have been molded inside from storage...there are a zillion YUK reasons those folks may have tossed it....or they just didn't like it and have money to waste, but YOU don't know which, and thus...no way.

If it's in decent condition and looks nice, I don't mind putting in some elbow grease for something free.

dno what wmi is, i go dumster diving all the time. I've gotten some furniture from curbs that were mentioned on Craigslist, if i remember right, or maybe just grabbed up, after looking and having a feel for itches of course.. i trust food from dumpsters more than furniture though. no bedbugs there..i've learned to trust my instincts and haven't gotten sick yet. Lots of companies throw stuff out when it's a week before expiration date etc. like potato chips. potato chips don't expire till you've eaten them if they're on your shelf at home now eh? once i get a basket for my bike, i'm going to be more better of a dumpster diver/freegan and drop off @ soup kitchens some of the individually sacked or unopened stuff i get, like the hundreds of bagels Brueggers throws out on a biweekly basis, or hundreds of bags of potato chips from trader joes.. to name a few
blessed be

If there was nothing wrong with it (not torn where you couldn't see, no mice, no animal urine), then I'd take it. Hell, I might even ask them to make sure nothing was wrong with it then "take it off their hands". Done it before.

I have pulled very expensive things out of the dumpster. Just because someone is throwing it away doesn't mean its gross. You just have to make sure no one has thrown something gross on top of it.

I do! In school a lot of the kids trash excellent things, like storage units, cool looking glass (for plants), and textbooks. The things they throw out simply because they don't want to move it...

The bedbug thing has discouraged all apartment dwellers from taking used furniture around here.

It depends on the items. If they look clean i'm all for it. But I don't do it

Dumpster diving all the way! I've pulled all kinds of good stuff out of dumpsters behind stores. It's unbelievable how much crap industry wastes.

Awwww. Yay saving Harry Potter!
Also, I've dumpster dived before, but haven't found anything worth keeping yet. But it's still quite fun. :]

With couches and chairs I would be worried about beg bugs... But I would be okay with things like shelves and stuff that can be sanitized.

Well, I don't consciously seek dumpsters out, but if I'm tossing something and notice something nice, I will grab it.

My wi-fi network is powered by a router I found in the dumpster.
My headphones are Sennheisers (a damn good brand) also found in the dumpster
My brother uses a laptop I found in the dumpster (had to fix the wifi on it)
My TV in my bedroom is one that someone trashed.

So while I won't go looking for things on purpose, if I see something I think is worth grabbing I definitely will.

I can't see myself picking up something from a Dumpster or a curb, but I have unloaded stuff that way, because it's a lot less hassle then making a post on Craigslist Freebies.
