Would you go dumpster diving?

Probably not for a couch. Mostly because I know what I do on my couch. But other stuff I might consider.

I used to do this every morning with my mom. It helps to have no shame. But I've never had cause to regret doing it.

When college students move out and dump everything that won't fit in their car to go home, absolutely. Otherwise, no. I hear too much about bed bug stuff to trust much.

I have found awesome things in dumpsters. Plus I do it to look for coupons.

I wouldn't just for the sake of me being afraid of getting sick or catching something. A sex ED teacher I had in middle school said his brother caught crabs from sitting on a used couch. :S

My best friend got her sectional couch from dumpster diving. After a good cleaning it was the most comfortable couch I've ever slept on.

Dumpster Diving rocks!!! I live right by our university here too and find the end of spring semester to be the best "pickins". I've mostly picked up storage and decorative items. The first time I went with a couple of friends with kids too, and the kids had a blast. We even found toys with tags still attached.

One of my favorite finds was an ugly pedestal table with brown laminate on the top. I took it home and cleaned it up, and the metal pedestal made it look sorta retro. I put primer on it and I'm going to paint is black and put a black and white pinup girl photo collage on the top.

I have no hesitation going through dumpsters and trash cans if I find something interesting. If I'm walking around I even find myself peeking in if I pass by a receptacle LOL.

I've heard we have a small group of freegans in the area, and Food Not Bombs here gets a lot of food from dumpsters too.

In my family we call it the city store, or the big store. My boyfriend is the same way always bringing home stuff from the alley to rip apart. We pulled a computer out of the garbage the other day and stripped it for parts for things we make. Like model spaceships and such. And the copper! That shit is worth a lot.

oh and my current couch is a garbage couch. It is leather and we took it in right when they got rid of it and washed it really well. We always get compliments on it.

As long as it's not rained on and doesn't smell like smoke or pets.

Check for bedbugs first, though. Bedbug-infested furniture is very easy to get.

I've dumpster dove. Found some really cool things. A couch, probably not.

I have gotten a few tables and other antique items by 'dumpster diving', but not actually in a dumpster. They are left at the curb or on the side of the road. Some assholes dumped in the mountains, but we cleaned it up and found a bunch of old liberty dollars in a broken chair.

Maybe a table or desk I would go grab. Not a sofa. I would only get a used one from a person I knew. I am not into the dumpster diving.

If it hadn't gotten wet I sure would. I'd clean the hell out of it but definitely.

I've a general rule that, if they're throwing it out, it's probably broken, so no, I'd not dumpster dive. But if a friend is getting rid of something because they're upgrading (and haven't thrown it out yet) then I'd have no problem with buying it off them.

I had a friend who would do this, and while i think it's a cool idea, it's not something I would care to do

depends upon the item and situation. i'd say no to furniture or anything can can hose insects (bedbugs) or animals, but yes to things like electronics.

Here, even if it is by or in a dumpster it is called "curbside shopping" and I do it, many of my friends do it, and as long as the item is clean and doesn't smell bad, don't see why not!

I've gotten a cool entertainment center that way, and a nice chair among other things! Clothes I probably wouldn't do unless they were in a box or something, and didn't have anything gross on them, and I always ALWAYS clean like a mad person before I use anything but I do the same thing after thrift shopping.

I have picked stuff up from beside the trash, and would do so again in a heartbeat. I was just talking to a customer at work today about how this culture throws away so much good stuff. It's shameful.

It'd have to be a really nice couch for me to want to take one off the curb (or next to a dumpster). Then I would need to give it one hell of a cleaning.

I have no problem with picking up tables, shelves, things like that from the curb...but I wouldn't actually go dumpster diving. And absolutely nothing with fabric.
