In what places do you believe smoking should be banned?

I don't smoke anymore but I feel smoking outside anywhere is fine. As long as you're not standing in a doorway. Also in a bar.

I personally see nothing wrong with "outside smoking". I've always been respectful. I don't mind having to go outside. When you tell me that there are places I can't smoke when I'm outside is when I get irritated.

The one thing that pissed me off is getting told my the property manager of my apartments that all smoking must be kept INSIDE the apartment. I'm not smoking in a stairwell, balcony, or anything like that. My apartments are set up like a motel. I can't stand outside and smoke.

She came down here and told me herself one day. "You can't smoke outside" (This also includes the parking lot.) "You need to keep it inside the apartment." What if I had a baby in the apartment? What if my roommate was allergic to smoke? What about my cat? I choose to smoke outside for this reason. I'm not going to risk their health because of a habit I choose to have. My neighbors all know that they can tell me if they have any issue with it. I don't throw cigarette butts everywhere. Plus, I don't feel like having to pay the extra $250 when I move out for smoke damage.

I do find it very, very strange that a landlord would prefer irreparable smoke damage to carpet, walls, and ceilings over designating an outside area for smoking. Not to mention that can affect anyone who lives in your place after you. Doesn't make sense of her to say.

Of course, I understand not wanting to allow smoking just anywhere outside. I mean, the same reason you wouldn't want to do it in your home because of possible children, pets, roommates, etc. is the same reason not to do it in the stairwells, right outside the landings, or in the parking lots where all residents are forced to use/walk through.

But then, why doesn't she create an outside smoking area outside of areas that are necessary for residents to park or walk to their homes? Like a covered picnic table away from the parking lot? It'd be nicer for smokers, other residents, and for her maintenance crew.

If it's outside it should be fine. Unless you are close to a person (which is YOUR choice) you won't be killing yourself by breathing it. I think smoking should be permitted in a private place like your own car, apartment, etc. but outside is not going to hurt people if they aren't close to you and like I said, they HAVE A CHOICE! On the beach should be OK, but I don't like that people throw down the butts. That's terrible. However, I've never seen anyone be that disrespectful.

Most of the people that are around me all the time smoke. I do not, I hate it. I think it stinks and I do not want to smell it when I am eating, drinking, shopping, anything. It is disgusting! I have no issues with the current banning! I think that smokers should have respect for others and take that shit some where else.

I think smoking should be permitted in private residences and inside people's cars... and that's it. When it comes to publicly owned buildings and any place where people generally congregate, the health of others need to be taken into consideration. my mom has nasty allergic reactions to cigarette smoke and it's not something the health of the public should be exposed to.

i don't mind that people smoke, just do it in a place that won't get others sick. health is something i prioritize over comfort.

Although I do believe that people should be able to smoke in their own cars, it is only as long as there are no children in the car and any other adults have given the OK. I don't think smoking should be allowed in any public places and I consider myself lucky to live in a town where smoking is banned in all public places.

People keep saying that you have a choice to move when others smoke outside. I don't see it that way.

Take a recent 4th of July. Everyone gathers at the community park, spreads out blankets and waits for fireworks to begin. We arrive early so we can sit near the front. Then someone lights up and the stench comes our way. What are we supposed to do? Lose our prime spot? We would only find that someone else near our new location started smoking and we would once again be forced to breathe it. Do you propose that we just keep walking around continuously trying to avoid the smokers here and there? None of these options work.

People, please stop saying that non-smokers can just move out of the way.

So incredibly true. I especially hate it when smokers think their doing the "right thing" by being outside but then they stand right next to the door where everyone has to exit.

I think that smoking should be banned anywhere where there might be large numbers of children: Restaurants, parks, near schools, large public events, etc. But bars and clubs should be fine or have a 'smoking area' with added ventilation if you're worried about your patrons. Also people's private homes and cars are their responsibility and if they want to smoke there, I say have at it.

I don't really care if someone smokes on a sidewalk while walking or something because at most you'll walk through the area for a few seconds. What does bother me is when buildings designate their 'smoking area' as right outside the main door. At least designate it as the side door instead!
