Harry Potter. Twilight is garbage in my oh so humble opinion.

There's just no comparison. Twilight is horrendous. The writing is absolutely abysmal. Harry Potter has an amazing storyline, tons of substance, and a lovely, creative writing style.

On the other hand...If the author of Twilight can get published, it gives me more confidence that I can get published. I hate to sound conceited, but...I'm a wayyy better writer than her. I think anyone who can pass a 7th grade English course is probably a better writer than her :/

I never could get into Dracula BUT I am a huge Buffy fan. Spike... is a vampire. Angel... well, Angel's kind of a wuss, but he's way more of a vampire than Edward Cullen. I like my vampires to be mean, and vicious, and sadistic, and a little insane. Mmmkay?

I was into Buffy for a bit, but never anywhere near HP. I'm actually double a LOTR fan over HP and that says a lot since I love HP so much. Planning a trip to the new Adventure Park next summer .

Harry, though... Sigh. Love love love love love.

I went to the HP convention we had this past summer in Orlando - I didn't dress up as anything special, although I was accused of being Molly Weasley. We're gearing up for the next one there in 2012 (it's called Ascendio, you can look it up online - registration opens next summer). Most of my friends that I've met because of Harry Potter are legendary in the fandom for their writing and costuming.

I'm not into it as much as I used to be. I go to the cons to be with friends because it's the only time we can all get together. We're pretty high intellectuals - school teachers, computer programmers, research scientists, magazine writers, etc. That, I think, is the main difference in fan base between Twilight and HP ... I can't imagine any intellectual subsisting on Twilight fandom for long except as a guilty pleasure.

Okay, so I'm not alone in not having seen/read HP. I've only read parts of the second HP book, and seen none of the movies. I watched the Twilight movies, but I wasn't impressed. I voted Twilight though because I've at least experienced it in some form.

I'll admit, I was active in the HP fandom for a while a few years ago, but this t-shirt is about as close to the Twilight fandom as I get.

I am certainly more excited about the ending of the HP series more than I am about the Twilight series. It's interesting, but not as epic as the HP series.
11/23/2010
I've read both, and depending on my mood loved both series, but it's Harry Potter all the way for me. I honestly don't even see how Twilight became so popular, the writer is good, but not that good. Not to mention that vampires should never ever sparkle

Books. Hands down. 100000000% better than the movies. There have been a couple of movies that I've been sorely disappointed with. Prisoner of Azkaban being the worst for me because they left out and twisted MUCH of the back story between Sirius, Lupin, James & Lily, and Wormtail.

It's just that it's not even the same genre of book, so I don't get why they are compared so frequently. It's like asking people whether they like a steak or chocolate ice cream, the Lakers or the Cowboys... Yeah, the first two are foods and the second two are sports teams, but they're completely different types of each thing. Dinner vs. dessert, basketball team vs. football team.

It's just never made a whole lot of sense to me to compare the two. I like each series for what they are.
As a side note, a lot of people who have read the Twilight Saga and felt like Stephenie Meyer sucked as a writer later read The Host and loved it. I haven't been able to get very far in the book because I am also reading the Wizard's First Rule series and my mind goes to Richard and Kahlan every time she mentions 'The Seeker', but it is a better story so far. I actually think her writing style flows very well, she's a great story teller, it's just that the story in the Twilight books isn't appealing to everyone.

I think the reason they get compared more often is because they both had MAJOR success in the area of "young adult supernatural fiction." They are both huge phenomena in both the literary and big screen arenas that they get grouped together, even though they are nothing alike.

I also agree that it is difficult to compare the two. And people feel so strongly one way or the other.
HP movies are definitely superior, the Twilight books are entertaining and easier to read (for most, I would think), but I do think the Harry Potter series was better written.
But seriously, The Host is one of my favorite books. Hope you finish it...it is sooo good.

I made the mistake of seeing the first twilight and it was barely tolerable. When the 2nd one came out, I had already seen every thing else that was in the theaters and had a free ticket to waste so I saw it. Without question, it was the most horrible, insipid movie I've ever been subjected to. I ended up in the emergency room due to a severe estrogen overdose and needed testosterone treatments for months just to get back to normal. NEVER again! I'll take Harry Potter any day.
