I like anything that is really well written, even if it doesn't turn me on. But I think I like first-person best because I like to lose myself in a story as though I were actually in it. And the ones that get my engine revving tend to be the ones I like the best.

Cool! I like poetry. But I'm rather plebeian and like the stuff with rhyme and meter.

Would you care to share your poem? I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to read it.

Are you more turned on by feeling like you're watching players in a scene, or by feeling like you're in the scene yourself? Depends on the scene, I actually like both and in some stories will switch midstream!
Does it make a difference? Doesn't seem to really. Does a first-person perspective make a difference? Depends on the story, both can be very hot.

I know almost immediately whether or not I'll like a story — the style grabs me or doesn't. But the ones that genuinely turn me on, even after all of these years of reading porn on a daily basis, those ... more
Thrilling to see the interaction between two master editors.

I often end up watching my favorite movies over and over rather than giving new ones a fighting chance!

I love the ones with the best story. They don't have to turn me on, but the story has move me a little. It has to be more than just surface writing with no emotions or character development.

It is for an older Beat poet who is ailing. I think it would not add to this but I'll try my hand at some haiku for next NRBC!

Gone With the Wind! I own it on DVD, VHS and the book. I've read it and watched it so many times.

Yes, it has to be a good story or else it doesn't matter how the sex is. I have lots of porn.

It varies greatly for me. Sometimes I like a story because I can identify with one of the characters. Sometimes even though I don't really identify with any character, I am still drawn in by the plot or simply the elegance of the writing. In some cases I like becoming part of the story. In other cases, I like watching it like a movie. First, third or even second person narration (and yes I have read stories written in second person) doesn't seem to make much difference as to whether I will like it or not.

However, if something is badly written, even if I like the characters, or think the plot is clever, I have a hard time enjoying the story.

Brenda, didn't you do a poetry reading, too, last week? Inspired by the Beat tradition? Bay Area people have all the fun! Just seeing the event listing on Facebook inspired me to re-read (well, listen to on tape on a long car trip) Dharma Bums.

It doesn't make a difference to me. As long as it's well written, I'm into it. However, realistic concerns will sometimes intrude. There was a story in this collection where a character has sex with a stranger on the beach, and that took me right out of the story. My brain just kept screaming, "THAT'S NOT SAFE." I know it's fiction, but it still bothered me.

Me, too. Well worn books — John Albert's Wrecking Crew (over and over and over). I honestly can't read the book enough, and I have no idea why.

I have a serious question that was conjured by Sacchi's question about intros and what we call "front matter." We had a big debate about whether people read prefacesa and intros with roman numerals or whether readers see the roman numberals and skip to page one.

What ya'll do?
