Okay, it's getting near my bedtime here on the east coast and I still have some work to do! So I'm going to say good night! Thanks as always to Laurel for providing us with this fabulous forum to discuss books! And thanks to Alison Tyler for dropping in and entertaining us with anecdotes! And I want to thank Sacchi Green for taking over the moderating duties of the Naked Reader Book Club for the next few meetings! You are in excellent hands!
I'll be back soon, but I'm going to miss the chats! Keep reading, keep reviewing and keep coming back to the Naked Reader Book Club!!
Good night!

I ended up taking a couple shots of Demerol because the pain Pitocin contractions wore me out, I couldn't rent, I never would have been able to push.

In Luscious, there's a story with no anal sex. There is *about to be* anal sex in the tale (heh), but the action doesn't happen in the story.

I felt bad for him more, actually---he'd clearly asked her to do interesting things with him before, and she didn't want to until she was under duress... which made me sad. But I felt bad for both of them, very much.

Since I'm a few pages in and nobody else had brought them up yet, my two favorites from PWF were Trial by Fire and Scorched---because both tied in really well with many of my own fantasies, and everybody was consenting.
And lawd were they well-written!

I definitely prefer stories where I identify with the leading character. For me, it doesn't really matter even if the protagonist is a guy (like in Flick that Bic) or a girl---if their sexual appetites are similar to mine, I'll identify.

I've been thinking about why we do or don't like certain stories, and wondering whether it's linked to how well we can feel ourselves in the part of the point of view character. Not identifying, exactly, because that might imply feeling similarities, but seeing things through her (or his) eyes and feeling through, well, whatever parts are feeling the most. Are you more turned on by feeling like you're watching players in a scene, or by feeling like you're in the scene yourself? Does it make a difference? Does a first-person perspective make a difference?

No matter whether a story is written in first person (like Trial by Fire, in PWF, or Because he Can in Please, Sir) or in third person (like Scorched, in PWF) or in second person (if it's in first person but I identify with the partner (can't think of the example off the top of my head, but it exists)---I'll relate with the character who's most similar to me. And having a character similar to me means there's a strong chance I'll like the story.

It varies greatly for me. Sometimes I like a story because I can identify with one of the characters. Sometimes even though I don't really identify with any character, I am still drawn in by the plot or simply the elegance of the writing. In some cases I like becoming part of the story. In other cases, I like watching it like a movie. First, third or even second person narration (and yes I have read stories written in second person) doesn't seem to make much difference as to whether I will like it or not.
However, if something is badly written, even if I like the characters, or think the plot is clever, I have a hard time enjoying the story. less

And another thing I wanted to say was that I relate better to stories that give at least a little bit of mental perspective---again, no matter whether it's 1st 3rd or 2nd person---not so much that it gets in the way of sex, but enough so that you understand. I felt like Playing With Fire struck a really good balance of that.

Whether I read an intro depends more on the type of book than on whether you number it with romanettes or normal numbers. I will read intros when I know the intros are written by the actual editors---(introductio ns, especially in academic stuff, can get really stuffed-shirt-y). I'll read intros to texts where I don't have a lot of background (behavioral economics, macroeconomics), but I'll skip them when I do (engineering in my own field). For fiction, I basically follow the "if by the author, read; if by someone else, skip" rule of thumb.

The romanettes just let me know where it's at---since I'm usually reading Cleis intros, the different numbering just helps me find it!
