Ok, I'd like to welcome everybody (officially) to the first Eden Gives Back meeting!

Tonight I'd like to bring up:
- Ideas anybody may have for ways we can give back
- Who would be willing to run this? We were thinking a ... more
Seems like there are quite a few bloggers in the eden community. Maybe find a few who are interested in making regular "awareness" type posts every few weeks about different causes and ways they can be supported?

That is a great idea! One that could be done with little to no cost in most cases.

I think that would work good. Especially how these causes can be supported.

It would also allow for "specialization" as the bloggers could tackle the particular causes that are especially important to them.

Alys, that's a great photo you just posted on the Share your photos thread. The tires are an especially great - if ironic - touch.

I think the key to being effective in the long term is organization. I have two different ideas for organization (suggestions).

- We can try to organize as a large unit.
The whole clubs could have a structure and we could find projects, raise funds, and work with charitable organizations as a large group.

or

- We can try to organize into smaller teams.
These smaller teams might be 2-4 people each. Each team would choose its goals and do its own fund-raising. The efforts here have the potential to be just as big as the larger group, but there can be many smaller campaigns going on at one time. The smaller campaigns will probably be a little more work for each person than if there was one larger group though.

Thoughts?

umm there also seems to be a few people who like making their own home made products like lotions, toy bags, jewelry. If there were enough people who created things like that who were willing to donate a thing here and there (I imagine it would be relatively inexpensive for them if it were only a few things) they could be sold at a bizarre or on etsy with proceeds going to the causes we're supporting.

I realize that ones a little more tricky because it depends heavily on community participation, but it's an idea :p

Honestly, I think both of those are great. I guess it will just depend on what organizations we want to work with?

Haha, thanks. The snow had formed perfectly to the door, and I loved the lighting.

Cool idea! An Eden etsy.

I think it would be easiest to start as a large group and see how many people actually participate and then once there are enough people involved break into smaller target groups. Starting as a large group also helps people get an idea of how to go about it all.

I think that both ideas have the potential to become something awesome in their own rights, and will allow for the tackling of multiple projects that different people might be more passionate about. The more "topics" we have, the more people who want to see something good be done.

I think they could both work good. I guess I would say the large unit may work a bit better. The smaller groups would cover more at one time though.

argh Sorry not good with this kind of thing.

That's a tough one. With the latter, I think you'd have to find groups of people who are especially gung-ho about particular causes. I'm not sure how easy that will be. A poll might help address that.

The large unit is probably safer, but I'm not sure you'd get the same exuberance.

Sorry for the vacillation there

They've both got pros and cons.

I talked to Fred about having community crafts available on EF. He was all for it. There are a few tricky aspects to making that work. It would have to be on consignment, and it would have to be shipped to EF to be available. I didn't really want to talk about this until after the warehouse moved, but that is happening this week actually.

The composition was quite nice. It's too bad there wasn't a way to add a touch more light to the interior, but such is the nature of digital photographs.

Honestly, I think everyone's schedules fluctuate too much for the larger grouping idea. But also, these were merely suggestions to help get a dialog going. You do not have to pick one of them.

Cool, what a great idea. Like Alyjazz was saying, this would be a great way to contribute for those with limited funds.

I thought this would be a great tie-in with a lot of the workshops. But it would be a lot of fun to do as a fundraiser as well.

It definitely would. I know I'd be willing to send in a few of the bags I've made for something like this.
