They have to have the real thing for it to count
If a person uses toys, is the person still a virgin?

The hymen can be broken by many things - horseback riding, gymnastics, accidentally stretching your legs too far, or even sitting down too hard on a bike seat. Some girls are even born with incomplete hymens. So really, hymen condition isn't an indicator of virginity.
I broke mine just with my own fingers, and I consider myself a virgin. I think there has to be another person involved to change that.

Even if a girl's hymen is broken, she's a virgin until an actual penis is inside her.

You have to have intercourse with another person in order to no longer be a virgin. It doesn't necessarily have to be a penis. I disagree with the person who said that lifelong lesbians can't lose their virginity. If two lesbian partners are having sex using dildos, then they are having sex, which means you're no longer a virgin. Masturbating does not count as sex.
How do people feel about anal sex? I know some people who were "waiting" and chose to have anal sex because it wasn't giving up their virginity.

I agree with this except for the penetration part. I don't think penetration should be a determining factor, but it most often of course is the case during sex. Anyhow, if you're getting your groove on with someone else and your lower parts are being extensively played with, I'd say that makes you no longer a virgin.

IMO, (which people can choose to disagree with or not) those who play with toys and have not had some kind of penetrative sexual play with an other person are still virgins. It's like saying a guy who jerks off isn't a virgin anymore, even if he's never had a female or male lover. He still is. Using a penetrative toy is no different, as the hymen really means nothing. less

sexual intercourse is a relative term, I think all sexual pairings when they are intimate with each other in that way they have "lost" their virginity. But virginity is all psychological to me anyway.

Now, this also imply s that the sexual intercourse is between male and female. There is no concept of thought that two females could take another females virginity. Just part of the day and age that we live in sad to say.
A lot of people will say for a female, they are till they have a real live penis inside them. The same people will say a guy is only a virgin will he has sex with a female. As, this is what was thought of when the term was first defined. It all comes down to the fact of how you feel. Like the others have said the hymen can be broke many different ways, heck.. some females are lucky and not even born with one or a lot less of one. less

The hymen is mostly a myth. Actual hymens rarely perform the way they are "supposed" to. Unless the male was very rough with her or unless she had a huge hymen, most non-virgins still have their hymens. Hymens of usual sizes tend to stretch rather than break, and may disappear slowly over many years or never disappear.

By the way, an interesting historical fact on the word "Virgin": In ancient Greece, a woman who was independent of a man (but may have still had intercourse) was called a virgin. Hence Artemis and Athena being called virgin goddesses, but having had male consorts at one time or other. "Maiden" meant a woman who had not had sex yet. So by that definition, you're 100% a virgin

Hymen remnants are sometimes found when a woman gives birth!
It's a concept I don't like because it--in my opinion--promotes patriarchy. I like "The Purity Myth" as a good read on the topic, though I don't know how I feel about the book yet.
Astutite comments, folks, by the way.
Interesting question, thanks for the original post

virgin until intercourse, in my opinion.

I really hate the whole virginity obsession... I mean, I really don't care what you've done as long as whatever you're doing you go about in an emotionally healthy way.
If you don't think it's necessarily a physical thing, like being penetrated generally, then there has to be a more psychological component. But if that's so, then I don't think the girl getting off on a vibrator is much different than the girl who's concentrating on her deep throat skills because she wants to stay a "virgin" until marriage or whatever the reason is, and both of them are probably a lot less ehem, virginal, per se, than the girl who had sex once and then held off from anything for years.
My advice, stop worrying about what you are, what label appropriate describes you, and just focus on what you like and what makes you most comfortable. Do what works well for you and keeps you safe and happy and gets you a physically and emotionally fulfilling relationship. Frankly, nothing else matters.

I think virginity is about doing sexual things with another person. how you define virginity after that is another issue.
