Since Real Live Nude Girl is Carol Queen's personal experiences with sexual exploration and growth, I thought it would be interesting to find out what YOUR chapters would be called in a book of your own experiences. For instance, Carol has essays called "The Queer in Me," "Body Modification: Blood and Knives," "Safe Words and Safe Sex" and "In Praise of Strap-Ons."

So, what would some of your essays be called if you wrote a book about your sexuality? I would have chapters called, "Everything I Need to Know About Sex I Learned from Romance Novels," "In Praise of Vibrators," "Phone Sex and Me," and "The Making of an Erotica Writer."

Alan says: Heh. Mine would be "How an Angel Turned Me Into a Devil," and "Yes, Mistress"

"Me, Myself, and I: learning my own body" "My new vibrator and the quest for some damn batteries" "from erotica to porn and back again"

Awesome, I love them! (Especially "Aging as a Certifiable Nympho." I would love to see more sex-positive writing about women over 30!)

Julia, I really like the first one. Learning one's own body is so important, and often a neglected topic in the women's magazines.

Ha - I would totally have a "Phone Sex and Me" chapter too.

Also chapters titled "Word Whore", "How a Feminist Became a Submissive", "My Intelligence Fetish", "Kinky Stuff I Swore I'd Never Do, But Did" and "I'm Not Bi-Curious, Dammit! or Why I Don't Have to Have Sex With A Woman To Know I'm Attracted To Her."

Ke ~ I lol'd at the last one! Don't you just love when the postman leaves a package of goodies on your front porch and it's hours before you retrieve it? I always wonder what would happen if someone decided to steal it!

I cannot answer because I am not good at coming up with witty shit in short formats. I do, however, expect there'd be a chapter or an entire section on the shit I was lying to myself about.

Between the two books, I think the message is one of female-centered sex-positive experiences. Do you think this is reflected in our culture-- or do we really have to go looking for that sex-positivity? (I know the obvious answer is that our culture is anti-sex, but perhaps it depends on the individual's experiences to define what is sex-positive.)

Probably we should ALL have a chapter on that.

"Fiction is the truth inside the lie." ~ Stephen King

We all lie to ourselves. And that first part "I am not good at coming up with witty shit" is pretty witty.

As sex toy reviewers it often seems like "everyone" is very sex-positive, but for the culture as a whole it still appears to be a struggle.

LOL, thanks. Maybe I'll just have satirical chapters, y'know.. "It Wasn't Sexy But Now I think It's Pretty Damned Funny"

I'm glad you said that. I think of my writing/internet circles as being very sex-positive, but then get smacked in the face with reality in my day-to-day life.

I think it's much easier to find that sex-positive community than it used to be. We are no longer forced to only accept the people we can see and touch as our peers. Instead of just keeping your mouth shut when your views differ from your immediate community, you can seek out other communities, using the Internet as a resource.

I really do think this has led to more discussion and more enlightenment. There may not be any less negativity or fewer anti-sex messages, but I think there are more positive messages out there.

You can see pockets of surprising acceptance of non-traditional gender and sexually identified folks creeping up in different places—like that high school in Michigan who voted a transgendered boy as homecoming king.

The administration vetoed the vote, but the fact that kids were voting this kid homecoming king rather than shoving him in a locker because he was different speaks volumes about this generation, coming of age, being far more open minded than the generations before them.

Totally agree here. Most of us around these parts are on the sex-positive band wagon but we absolutely do not represent the world at large.

Oh my god, I must answer this one.

It would begin with my end of high school/early college experiences called "Confessions of a Technical Virgin" then "The Art of Sexiling" "Long-distance Relationships aka Thank God for the Internet and Dildos" "Masturbation and Mini-fridges"

Incidentally, the last one is the title of a short series on college life and sex that I'm writing for EdenCafe
