what kind of supplies do you use during menstruation?

I've been using a Diva Cup with my IUD since it was inserted 3 1/2 years ago with no troubles. Talk to your doctor if you want some reassurance (If they know what it is! Mine had no clue when I told her about it). I know there are plenty of other women using that combination too.

Just disposable tampons here. I can't do pads- I tried it once when I first got my period and hated it. Haven't turned back since! I also need Midol / Pamprin during that time of the month or I might hurt someone...

I have to say that I LOVE my Diva Cup.

I use reusable pads from Saucy Tots (they have pirate print ones! and so many awesome options!) for the days when I don't feel up to wearing my Diva Cup.

I only like wearing pads. Tampons are so uncomfortable to me.

I use to use a Diva Cup but it kept leaking so I switched to a Lunette. It's a bit more firm so it doesn't collapse when I exercise or have an otherwise active day. I also was fortunate enough to win a pair of Lunapanties in a contest and have officially been converted to their stuff. I'm placing a pretty big order for some more panties, pads and liners soon. They're so much more comfortable than the disposable stuff and I can wash them instead of having the lingering odor of used pads/tampons in the garbage until the week is up.

My ex just used disposable tampons. I didn't know there was such a thing as a reusable tampon or pad, and I've never heard of menstrual cups. What the heck are those?

I used cloth pads for a while, but then my skin started getting irritated so I went back to tampons (disposable).

menstrual cups are exactly what they sound like, a small silicone or rubber cup to contain menstrual fluid rather than absorb it. Divacup and Lunette are brand names.

I have always used disposable tampons, except after childbirth.

I received the Moon Cup and two boxes of Instead Cups to review for my blog, so I may switch to those. I used the instead cup 6 years ago to help me conceive. It worked the first time

The day I received my LadyCup my boyfriend and I were messing around when I was struck by a random idea. I reached over him to get the cup out of its pouch and placed it on the head of his penis, looked up at him with my winning-est smile and said "Your penis has a hat." We laughed so much that we forgot about what were doing, it was such a random silly moment.

More recently, he walked in on me while I was emptying my cup. My reaction was "Oh, hey..." *resumes cleaning*, but he was so mortified because he felt like he had disrespected me and my privacy. So cute!

I love my cup, I'm pretty sure that my menstrual cramps are not as severe as they had been before switching over. It holds more so I don't have to change it each hour at the beginning of my period. In fact the capacity was what convinced me. I have a relatively long period that is soo heavy at the beginning, and disposables were always such a hassle.

Now that I use a cup, we have more money to spend each year on fun stuff instead of buying disposables. So yeah, if you're on the fence about getting a cup... You know you'd rather spend that extra $50 each year on toys.

I'm so sorry that I sound like an advertisement. I just really love my cup!

I use disposable tampons. The diva cup is somehow not for me.

I use pads and tampons but I'm seriously considering a cup. Actually, I've wanted a cup for a long while. Not for eco reasons or anything, just simply I have a harsh, long period that I hate. It's so heavy that I was wearing a huge pad, a super+ tampon, and within an hour I had soaked both and leaked. At least with a cup, it forms a seal and you're less likely to leak. Plus when I wear a tampon the clots build up and make me cramp. Not an issue with the cup. Even if I had to change a cup every hour or so, it would be much better than wearing tampons and pads. And as a SAHM, I don't really have to worry about the hassle of cleaning a cup because I can always dump in the toilet and clean it in the tub real quick before reinserting it. I wouldn't have to worry about being somewhere public usually.

Damn, I just resold myself!

Oh and for those wondering about using one with an IUD, if you're using a Diva Cup or Luna Cup... these cups are placed in the same place as tampons, in the vagina, not near the cervix. You should always double check with your doctor in case your vagina is too short, but overall it shouldn't be a problem. If you're looking into Instead brand of disposable cups, that might be more of an issue since it is positioned at your cervix (although you're supposed to be able to still have sex while wearing one of them).

I used to do pads and tampons when I was younger, but I hated pads. They are bulky. And I started wearing thongs and g-strings early (as I found them more comfortable and less visible under clothes.), so pads weren't really ideal. I eventually switched to tampons only. Last year, I had a few free pad samples. I warmed up to them a little. Maybe they've improved in the last decade? So I occasionally wear them at home during the beginning of my period and in combination with tampons.

I have heard of menstrual cups for a long while. I kind of don't think they would be practical when I'm going out (I'm clumsy, don't want the possibility of a mess and so on.). But I really hate the idea of my tampons and pads existing in some fashion after I've used them. I hate writing that out, it's disgusting. But because it is disgusting and would like to cut down on waste a little, I might try one some day.

I haven't liked the look of other reusable I've seen. I suppose I could make my own pads as I'm crafty like that, but I'd rather not wash them. I hate doing laundry!

The Diva Cup is not supposed to leave a mess. You're supposed to fold it, insert it, and kind of twist it a bit to create a seal. It's also supposed to last up to 12 hours depending on how heavy your cycle is, so if you inserted it right before you left, you'd probably manage your whole outing without worrying about it. AND... unlike tampons, when you pee, the Cup won't expand, so you wouldn't need to change it when you use the bathroom. WHY haven't I bought one of these yet???

I would actually really like to try the menstrual cup. I have never had a doctor mention in an exam that there is anything strange about the position of my cervix. From feeling my cervix myself, I don't know if the cup would work.

The position of your cervix should have little to do with the way a cup works. It fits in your vaginal canal and is placed right where you would a tampon!

But could emptying potentially create a mess?

I don't have one yet. I hear at first, it's tricky, there's a learning curve. But once you've done it a couple of times it gets easier. This is definitely one of those things you want to work out at home before you venture out into the big bad world. Of course, if you ended up loving it, imagine not having to buy tampons and pads every month or two!?

In response to the questions about IUDs, the problem isn't the position of the cup, it's the suction it creates when you remove it. It varies by brand, but some menstrual cup manufacturers specifically suggest that women with an IUD shouldn't use their cup because of the increased risk of expulsion. It's worth doing some research, if you have an IUD and are considering getting a cup.

The livejournal menstrual cup community is a great resource. Here's a link to the posts they have on IUDs: link

potentially, but so long as you remove it carefully and don't try and yank it out by the tab it shouldn't make a mess, and it would probably hurt if you tried that. I can't imagine making a mess with mine, but I chose to remove it in the shower the first few times just in case.

The first few times that you use it I highly recommend emptying it at home until you get the hang of it. The first time I emptied it was a little awkward but after that I was fine.
