What do you use during your period?

Contributor: smashthepatriarchy smashthepatriarchy
I was a tampon user for many years throughout my teens years and in July of 2011 I bought a menstrual cup. It was the best decision I've ever made.

If you use cups - what brand do you use?

I use Diva Cup.

I have never tried a menstrual cups but pretty much anything I've read about them has been "best thing I've ever done". I would be willing to try one.

Diva cup. Especially after my heavy day has passed I love it because it's comfortable and safe to leave in all day (or night). Also nice is that when I used to use tampons, they often wouldn't absorb fully if I masturbated with it in. The cup stays in place during and keeps working.

I started using the Instead SoftCup a couple of months ago and I will never go back to tampons. I can go all day before having to empty it, it has never leaked, and you can even have sex with it in, which is a major plus for anyone with a partner who isn't fond of blood.

menstrual cups are amazing (divacup, silicone). Except I seem to have misplaced mine. Humbug.

I love the Diva cup. I actually have both because I have a child I got the number 2 and it was too big so I bought the number 1 which is perfect.

I wouldn't want to be without my Diva cup. Tampons were uncomfortable, pads were messy... but this is just perfect.

I use pads, and rarely tampons (they make my cramps worse). I'd LOVE to try a Diva Cup, but it grosses my boyfriend out. We'll see in the future.

I use pads and once in a rare while, tampons. I hope this doesn't sound like a stupid question, but what is freeballin?

Freeballin is a term that means you don't use anything. I know a few people who don't use anything.

What?!?! They don't use ANYTHING? How is that even possible? I've never heard of someone not using anything. I'm not trying to come across as rude, but the idea seems so impossible. Are they on some kind of birth control where they have little to no bleeding? Even with that, you would at least need to use a panty liner; right?
p.s thanks for defining freeballin for me.

I've tried soft cups but the mess that comes with removing them is just not worth it for me. And they were nearly perfect! So, now I just stick with tampons.

Well, I used to have awful periods so tampons were the only thin that I could use and those still needed changing every few minutes on some days! Now, I've been taking an injection that stops my periods because I had endometriosis and the injection stops periods and helps with the pain and slows the growth of endometrial tissue. Thankfully, I don't have to spend 4 days going from the bed to the bathroom when I have periods.

My sister used the cups before and hated them. They just aren't really the best for someone with abnormally heavy periods. It was disasterous for her. I can see it being good for some though.

I distrust pads, I get paranoid about going without anything, and the idea of a cup gathering my period blood within my lady bits just makes me uncomfortable. I prefer tampons because it absorbs the blood and you toss it out.

Well, the people I know are really...free spirits. They eat strictly vegan diets and they make their own clothes. So, they don't use any feminine products, they just have clothes they specifically wear on those days and it's no big deal to them.
They are a bit...on the extreme side, but they are lovely people.

I use tampons and have been since I got my period at 12. I am considering trying the diva cup. The only thing I couldn't use is pads. They make me feel like I'm wearing a diaper.

There are many different brands of menstrual cups, but the Diva Cup is most widely available.
It's a fairly squishy, silicone cup that's generally somewhat cone shaped, which is inserted into the vagina and if it fits properly, catches menstrual blood without soaking any natural vaginal lubrication up like tampons can, and creates FAR less mess than just pads. Many women like em, plenty hate em.
I really like my diva cup, it's awesome and doesn't create leaks, doesn't HURT like tampons used to, I don't have to worry about ruining my jeans, all that good stuff!
