Haha, I know! But, as I mentioned, it's mostly a mental block as far as no glass in the butt. You know the video I am talking about, right? Once you see that...very hard to unsee it. Glass in the butt will just probably never be sexy to me because of that video...

I recognize both borosilicate glass and a quality hard wood toy are, realistically, pretty safe. I make no claims above about them being inherently unsafe. I state that these are my personal preferences. The margin of error for both of those materials is such that I am still cautious when it comes to using them. My preference is not rooted in ignorance, but rather a well informed skepticism and weighing of possible costs and benefits.

I was just talking about how I was terrified of splinters with wood toys and would likely never get one. I've gotten splinters from glazed furniture as well. Splinters internally?? OUCH. Total mental block on wood toys for me.

Yes. I've been burned by jelly toys before and it was horrible. Ew. I also don't go in for any porous materials generally (cyberskin-like ones are what I'm thinking of here) because my budget is tight and it's really not worth it for me to collect toys that are high-maintenance or have a kind of expiry date on them (if they degrade and whatnot). I'd much rather invest in silicones that I can keep forever.

I have learned so much about toys reviewing them that now I know what a good material is. Before I did reviewing I just figured that all materials were good. Boy a little knowledge goes a long way!

Geesh, how many threads do you need to start to realize that jelly is cheap, toxic and nasty?

A link is provided here to the actual government study Denmark that found those chemicals in jelly and vinyl ... more
THANKS for the links. Greatly appreciated.

Good golly....I am starting to rethink my love affair with my jellies. I think I have been lucky to NOT have any issues all these years. Reading how many people have had bad experience is downright scary.

Well...reading so many people who have PERSONAL experience is sure different then just reading the data. VERY informative.

THIS ONE sure did it for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I must admit, I never EVER had trouble with Jellies and LOVED mine. Loved the feel and the softness, but this thread has sent a real chill up my spine with worry. Maybe it is time to retire those toys???

If you love your jellies, I don't think you have to abandon the material altogether. You should, however, be aware of the very real risks involved. Manufacturers will always downplay the risks of their product - from aspirin to cheeseburgers. Sadly, it is the job of the consumer to research the risks involved and weigh them.

You can continue to jelly toys for insertion and greatly minimize your risk by using a condom. There's really no way to know exactly what chemicals are in your jelly toys. There are virtually no regulations for sex toys and there is certainly no FDA-esque board that reviews sex toy companies to ensure they are looking out for the best interests of their customers. Many toys are made in nations where hazardous materials are commonly and legally used in production, and it is very difficult to know which toy does or does not come from such a factory. In my opinion, it is better to err with caution and always use a condom with these toys. This is a good idea anyway because jelly is highly porous and can transfer bacteria to the vagina or anus - though the vagina is specifically more prone to harm in this way.

Additionally, start looking for this on your toys: "phthalates-free". Edenfantasys does an awesome job of keeping their buyers aware of the presence of phthalates by listing it on the product page. Take advantage of that! Here for example, you can see on the right hand side of the product page under "Materials" that is says "phthalates-free". If it doesn't say that, in my humble opinion, you should look elsewhere. Why? Because there is absolutely no excuse, in my opinion, for a sex toy company using them when they are strongly linked to (depending on what product they are used in and how they are absorbed and in what quantity) birth defects, reproductive problems, breast and other forms of cancer. There is NO EXCUSE because you do NOT need to use phthalates as an elasticizer. There are other options and plenty of companies make good use of those other options. In 2011 these companies know the risks . If they continue to use something that could give me cancer, I do not wish to give them my business.

Provided your jelly is phthalates-free though, I say go ahead and keep on loving it. Just make sure you stay on the look-out for tell tale signs of jelly expiration (discoloraton, taking on the scent of something besides jelly itself, etc) and throw them out at that time or after a year of use (whichever happens sooner). Jelly can't last forever, but you can certainly enjoy it during its lifespan without much need for concern. Just use condoms Think of sex with your jelly toys in the same way that you think of having sex with real life people; there's a risk involved, but it can be minimized with safe sex!

The only good PVC toys are the attachments for the Wahl. They aren't insertable, so are much safer. Also, they don't have a smell at all, after the first airing out. They aren't even that bad when you open the bag the first time. Nothing like Sil-A-Gel.

Also, Bignuf,

Perhaps consider upgrading to silicone composites like TPR? They are made from silicone and jelly materials, so they are somewhat safer and typically don't contain phthalates (but always check!) It's a good compromise because they still feel like jelly, but are a bit higher up on the safety scale.

I won't use toys made from jelly, rubber, PVC, latex, or UR3/other skinlike materials. I also won't buy wood, just because I don't like the way it looks (even for furniture) and I also think it would feel too light.

Pretty much everything I buy is silicone, glass or plastic. I have some TPR/TPE and TPR silicone toys too, mainly toys that were assigned to me.

I do not own a single toy. And, yes I know this is a toy site. I just like the forum and communication with others. I am a guy, I want a real person in my life. And, I think it is great that people have expanded their minds, interests and sexual prow less. It has been years for me, and I hope one day I will meet a new woman.

Jelly, cyberskin, etc, dildos. I don't have a problem with cyberskin sleeves, I bought them for my ex when i was with him, but for me? No go.

So it's basically like this...

I totally avoid Jelly toys. Whether they are used internally, or externally, they are not found in my toy box. I used to get them and only use them for a short period of time, but I no longer buy them at all.

To be honest, if it's less safe than a 7, I don't even contemplate it. why? Because I know it has a life that probably isn't that long as far as safety and quality.

I buy silicone, glass, and occasionally PU coated Plastic/Plastic toys. That's pretty much it.

Sil-a-Gel is evil. I got a migraine just from the smell of a review product. I will never ever touch the stuff again. Never. I reviewed the item, but I didn't let the dildo touch my sensitive bits, even with a condom. The smell was too awful.

Jelly is such an over-inclusive term, and can include horrible smelly burny stuff and other stuff that's perfectly fine. I wouldn't absolutely it rule out, if the reviews were okay and said the item didn't smell, but I'd be more likely just to save up for a TPR or silicone version.
