Do you find it easier to write more about toys you enjoy vs ones you don't? What I mean by this is are your reviews for toys you like more detailed, long and useful than the ones you don't

It's hard, because I find that for the toys I don't like, I can bang out a review and be very impartial and talk about who *may* like it even if it didn't work for me. I feel like reviews of products I don't like take me much less time. But they also aren't as passionate as the reviews about things that I do like.
The reviews on toys I like can be more difficult because I need to think about who may not like the toy, which can be hard for me. So even though I have more fun gushing over a well-liked toy, it can be a longer process overall.

I agree that it is hard to choose. I do tend to write longer reviews when it is about a toy that I had a bad experience with. When a toy does what it is supposed to do, I feel like the reviews can often sound so similar. "Oh this toy is so GREAT" "It does what is says it will!" When things go wrong though, they tend to get a bit more interesting. I would still prefer to write a review about a toy I enjoyed though.

Usually it's easier for me to write about toys I like because I'm enthusiastic about those, but sometimes I find it tricky to share my enthusiasm in the review. Actually, I personally think most of my reviews are boring. Especially the ones I do for toys that I just kinda sort of like, even though those are often the easiest for me to churn out. Hmm, maybe I voted wrong. It could really just depend on my mood.
Oh, and I should mention that I cheat a little and tend to only request toys I think I'll like, but I am trying to expand my horizons and move outside of that comfort zone. That can be tricky in and of itself because it's hard for me to judge the performance/efectivene ss of a toy if that's the first one of that type I've tried. If that makes any sense at all.

I'd say I'm pretty indifferent on whether I like the toy or not. In fact, it actually sucks if I like the toy because I always feel like my words aren't doing justice to how much I love the toy. It always just feels like just another review and I get disappointed in the review. At least, when I'm disappointed in a toy, I feel like I can properly convey that through a review.

Personally, I'd say that it can be difficult to be mostly objective when writing about something I do like. I try not to romanticize the toy and keep all potential buyers in mind; something that works for one user may not work for another. I want to make sure I point out both sides.
However, if I really dislike a product, it's usually because it has a serious flaw or is made horribly, etc. I find it easier to describe the product and then warn against it for X,Y,Z reasons. I also find it easier be humorous when writing about a hunk o'junk product

I think the ones I love or hate are the easiest to write. It's the ones where I'm more in the middle that are harder.

I was just going to say this. If I love or hate it at least I have something to say about it...when I'm indifferent...it's a lot harder to find things to discuss.

For me the hardest ones are those I buy/receive for the wife when she does not like them. She is still new to toys so I have a beginners point of view, but really no other knowledge of what more experiences users will find useful.
07/17/2010
I agree with Sammi and Sex, Lies & Law...If I have a feeling one way or the other, I've got somewhere to go with the review. If it's just 'meh' then I just feel like quoting the specs and what it does, but have no drive to write more detailed things. I still try to make myself get engaged in those reviews, but it's not as easy.

I struggle with toys we don't like. For me the greatest value in a review is how well it works. 99% of the time discussion about dimensions is just repeating the EF description. I love conveying how well something worked - so when they don't, I'm at a loss. I hate to dis them really bad - because they will work for someone.

Good toys are easy to review, but so are horrible ones. Its the bland, mediocre one's that give me trouble.
07/18/2010
I find if I like it, I have more to say. If I don't, I don't know what to say really, unless it's just terrible. If it's terrible I could give all reasons under the sun why it is (at least for me).
However, I try to be rather unbiased if possible when reviewing and be more objective, listing both pros and cons so people are aware of why the toy might not work for them exactly. But if I do like the toy, I maybe list a bit more pros than cons and gloat just a tiny bit.

I find it easier to write about toys I like because I can go on and on about the toy. When I don't like a toy I find it hard to concentrate on having constructive criticism.
07/18/2010
I agree with Sammi; toys that we have a solid opinion on one way or another are much easier to write about than toys that we're on the fence about. It can be hard to talk about a toy when nothing really stood out for us as either good or bad without sounding wishy-washy.

Yeah, I'm in that "I only request toys I think I'll like" group too. I hope it's not a bad thing!

It is hard for me to be objective about a product that is just blah. It's especially hard when there isn't anything concrete to point to that says "this product is just a piece of crud" it's just something that doesn't appeal to me. Thank goodness that I haven't had that happen very often...but then again it doesn't give me much to practice on! You get better with practice but I just don't find many products that I am blase about.
I have to agree with Alan and Michele I end up sounding vague or flip flopping and then it gets confusing to the reader! I don't want people wondering if it is a good product or not.
Ah well I imagine as time goes on I'll get more practice! LOL

I find it somewhat equal. When I hate a product, I can name and nitpick just about everything there is to gripe about with it. When I love a product, I can't stop raving about it. I find the neutral ones where I'm kinda like 'meh it's okay' as harder to write.

LOL. I am alone in this.

Yeah that's true if I like something I tend to just look at it from my angle but you're right I should think about it from other's as well.

I find the hardest toys to write about are the "meh" ones. Things come up easier for the "really like" and "can't stand" toys, but that middle ground can get difficult.
07/19/2010
I chose the third option and I'm going to echo what others have said: The ones that I'm indifferent to can be the hardest to write. I just want to write the basic stuff and be done with it, but I know I need to expand more and that's what trips me up.

If I don't like something, I"l try to find something good about it. which can take time.
07/20/2010
For the most part, its the same I think.

I love writing reviews on products I like. Makes it easier to write.
08/04/2010
To me it's definitely easier to write about the products I do not enjoy. I kind of use those reviews as warnings to others about the problems I encountered. Writing reviews for enjoyable toys is easy as well, but sometimes it's just so damned hard to put your orgasm into words.
08/05/2010
I enjoy doing both but writing about something that I REALLY enjoy is more fun.
08/05/2010
As of now, it's definitely easier for me to write a review if I liked the product.. kind of similar to when you're in HS and you have to write a book report. If I liked the book, it was fun. If I didn't, the report might not have been as good, or flowed as easily. I'm sure that will change for me with time, as I become a better reviewer!
08/12/2010
It's easier to just write when you feel passionate about a toy, but it's really fun when you've had a bad day and just let it all out on a toy review for a bad toy. Not that I would publish that, but it just lets you get your steam out, and then write a better review, even though it's a bad toy.
08/13/2010
For me, it's much easier to write about a toy I enjoyed; if I liked it, I'm enthusiastic about why everyone in the world should have this toy because it's so fabulous.
