Do You Like Getting Flowers?

Contributor: teeny <3 teeny <3
Call me crazy (and believe me you won't be the first) but I don't like being given cut flowers. *Gasp* It doesn't matter if it's roses, lilies, carnations, daisies or any other type. I don't like it. I appreciate the romantic intention, but it's just not the gift for me. My thought process usually goes something like this:

1. Oh cool you spent $25+ on something you know will not last.
2. My nose tickles and my eyes itch.
3. So there's going to be dead leaves and petal droppings on my coffee table for several days?
4. I hope the dog won't eat them.
5. Wait, tell me how killing an innocent plant creatively express how much you love me.
6. How long until I can just throw this away?
7. Well I guess I at least have an ugly cheap vase to keep under the sink and collect dust with . . . hooray?

So I was wondering am I the only one out there who feels this way? How do you react to being given cut flowers?

I have a love/hate relationship with having flowers sent to me.

I love getting sent flowers. Normally I get them from my parents, but either way I like them and they always cheer me up

I prefer a plant. I also dislike having real trees at Christmas because it seems like such a waste to cut down so many trees and then throw them away in a few weeks. (Plus the pine needles are very acidic and destroy the dirt where you discard them.)

I love flowers but I'd prefer something that's going to help the environment and not promote destroying it.

I like flowers, but voted "Hate it: keeping them green is too much effort", because it is really too much effort for something that's gonna die in a few days anyway. Moreover, it makes me really sad to see them fading
Also once my ex brought me flowers and I found a huuuuge caterpillar in there That decreased my passion for flowers a lot ))

Well I hate it all together. But the main reason is half the flowers no matter what make my allergies go nuts.

Me too! One of the best flora gifts I've gotten from a lover was a potted basil plant. It showed that he knew my feelings about flowers and that I love to cook. It was beautiful, practical and good for the earth!

Voting for my wife - she's very 'old fashioned'. Cutting flowers doesn't damage the environment and isn't some other contrived social evil. It's just a welcomed recognition that your lover is thinking of you and wants you to know it.

Sure I tell her all the time - but the occasional flowers are always a welcome treat for her.

I've received flowers only once in my life - on Valentine's Day, when I was 13, from my best guy friend. Totally out of left field of him; he was a typical 13-year-old boy and he never indicated that he felt anything for me, so I was speechless when he gave them to me that evening a few hours after school. We ended up holding hands while walking to the bus stop after that (since we were the only two at the bus stop) and he walked me home from school (since I lived further than he did).

I wonder whatever happened to him ... ?

So, in essence, my ex-husband never bought me flowers. Any flowers in the house were because I bought them or grew them. I'm an old-fashioned romantic and would love to get flowers. Problem is, I think I'll cry if a fella does and he'll be scared off by it.

Nah, I'm not a fan of flowers. I would rather receive a bulb/seed/whatever to GROW a bunch of flowers, than a bouquet.

I'd rather have chocolate, anyway.

Flowers are ok I guess, but I'd rather have something that lasts.

True chocolate is amazing. It actually serves the function of combatting the PMS deamons.

But in the spirit of honesty, I know that I, and probably several other EF readers, would prefer a new toy overall. I mean is there really a better way to say I love you than a bouquet of dicks?

Other: Meh - don't really care for flowers. They always die too quick. Waste of money! He should buy me a toy instead ... I'd get pleasure from it for a lot longer.

Flowers can be bad purely because flower farms are terrible for the environment.

I chose that I love it, but I also chose that I hate it!

I love getting them because they are sweet, but there are just things I would much rather get! They're too expensive and they die on me so easily. On top of that I have allergies and my cats love to eat them and/or knock them down.

Also, I have guilt when they die, because for the money spent on them by someone showing that they love me and care, I feel like they should last longer and it actually depresses me when they die! That's the reason I dislike getting them the most!

I have never received flowers in a romantic sense, only in appreciation for a performance. That said I would prefer not get them as a romantic gift. To me it just lacks creativity. I would much rather receive a gift that shows that they are paying attention to me and what I want/need. I'm probably one of the few women that would rather have a steam mop then flowers/jewelry.

I never really cared all the much for them, and thought they were a waste of money. But then my OH brings me a small arrangement now and again as a little gesture, and each time I've enjoyed them and cared for them! I'm a little mushy inside
