I'm just curious to see how many lefties and righties we've got in the community. Did you know that a lot of left-handed people were actually hit whenever they used their left hand as kids? I recommend reading this Wiki article to find out more about the negative connotations and about being left-handed in general. For the record, I think it's all a bunch of nonsense to treat left-handed people that way. I mean, really, it's so messed up.
What is your dominant hand?

I "do" everything with my right hand but my left arm is far stronger. Probably cuz of all the years waitressing -- carrying in the left arm, serving with the right.

My mother is left-handed, my dad is right-handed.
I'm right-handed, mostly. I do a few things with my left hand that I can't do with my right. It's weird.

They got over punishing left-handers in the school system by the 80's. I was actually rather lucky to have a teacher that said 'Mirror me.' instead of trying to teach me to write upside-down (which I notice a lot of other lefties doing). I can write in the same position as a right-hander, only mirrored onto the left.

I'm right handed but I'm a minority in our family. My grandmother, mother, one sister, and two of my children are all left handed.

My Man probably is one of those people who were "switched" as a kid. He thinks like a left hander, his interests are closer to left handers. He's in Engineering, and has said that in Project Meetings, he is in a room of up to 12 people (all mechanical, electrical or chemical engineers) and often the only right handed person in the room. He has illegible handwriting and although he claims not to remember, he had hard time learning to read (which is common with people who were forced to use their non-dominant hand) he went to grammar school in the 60s, when they were still forcing right handedness on kids, and I wonder if there is any way I could find out if he really IS a left handed person.
I'm right handed. I tried to teach myself to be ambidextrous when I was a teenager, but it didn't work. Why would I have done something like that?

I am trained to be right handed but I believe I am naturally left handed.I remember teachers correcting me as a child. In middle school I began teaching myself to use my left hand after and injury to my right hand. Now my right hand is still significantly weaker than my left (due to permanent injury) but its not that critical because I took the time as a kid to learn to use my left hand.. I favor the right hand.. but I can do 90% of the same things with my left.
08/25/2010
My grandfather was naturally left handed, but was taught to use his right hand as dominant when he was growing up. He basically became ambidextrous, which isn't a bad thing, just for all the wrong reasons.

My husband is left handed and I'm always completely forgetting about it. When I saw this poll I thought "Oh my god, my HUSBAND is left handed!!!" and then "How exotic!" hahahaha

I'm left handed. I was in school in the 80s and 90s and never had any flack from a teacher about being left handed. I don't remember having any trouble learning to write or anything either. The only thing I remember sucking about being a left handed kid in school was that when we'd take notes a lot some of my words would get smeared since lefties cover what they're writing with their hand as they write more.
My mom is a lefty and writes upside down a lot, it's not that she was taught that way though..it's just wha she does. My dad was hit with a ruler when he used his left hand, so he was switched to right handed writing. What's funny is that there is only 4 years difference between my mom and dad and they both went to the same school, so somewhere between 1955 (when my dad started school) and 1959 (when my mom started) they must have decided to let the kids write how they felt natural...at that school at least!
I remember when I was in high school I dated this boy that was left handed too and we used to talk about all the things lefties do. Like reading a magazine, we noticed that we and other lefties read magazines from the back to the front. We also decided that lefties eat icecream faster but I think that was just coincidence LOL.
There's actually a lot of lefties in my husband's family...he's a righty but two of his brothers and one of his nephews are lefties..so when we get together for family dinners we have to plan out who is sitting near who so that we don't have bumping elbows

My wife is a lefty when it comes to writing and eating, but she uses her right hand for most other things. What really surprised me was she is right eye dominate when it comes to shooting a bow or gun.
08/25/2010
I'm right handed, and I'm generally right footed (I kick soccer balls with my right foot and such), but there are certain things I do better left footed (better balance on my left foot, in track my left foot is always in front on the starting blocks). Same thing with my left hand, but I can't think of any examples at the moment.

I remember a lot of issues in school, although they never tried to force me to write with my right hand. There are very few things I actually use my right hand for - I'm very strongly left-handed. I even have lefty instruments (guitar and violin). I remember once going to a store at Fisherman's Wharf where they had a shop like Ned Flanders did on the Simpsons - everything you could ever want, geared for lefties. It was so cool!
I always loved this saying : "If the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, then only left-handed people are in their right minds."

Right handed. My grandma was hit for using her left hand as a child, now she's ambi.

I'm right-handed, but there's a few things I can do well with my left hand.. I'm actually better at giving hand jobs with my left hand! My man is left-handed, and oddly enough I've only ever dated left-handed guys. I wonder if it's a coincidence?

I also use my right hand for my mouse, at my one job my boss got me a left handed mouse and rearranged my desk for me one day so I could work with my left hand and I hated it. It just doesn't feel right and I can't get used to it. I like using my right hand for that anyway because it leaves my left hand free for writing stuff or things like that.

Here's a good one - I'm right handed but left-eye dominant. Although I don't own a gun or bow & arrow - when I shoot them I must sight with my left eye!

I'm an ambidextrous. When I was little I smahed my right hand and had to teach myself how to use my left one

I am totally right handed, can't do much with my left hand but guide and steady things. But I can do push-ups using my left arm.

I can actually shoot (we have a B B gun, nothing more) with either eye, but I prefer my left. Although, I got brain damage which effected my right optic nerve (or maybe it's the left side of the brain, which controls the right eye, I can never remember) as a baby from very high fevers (107 degrees, which is as high as thermometers went in those days) and my eyes and my brain often fail to work together.

For those who are interested in testing eye dominance, there's an easy neat little test;
Make a circle with your thumb and 1st finger
Hold out your arm and focus on an object inside the circle
Close one eye, then the other
The object will stay in the circle for your dominant eye and move out of the circle of your weaker eye
pretty easy!

I had a temp of 106 once and had to be rushed to the ER to be cooled down once--my temp would not drop and they said if I hadn't come in I could have gotten brain damage or died.

As for the hand thing... it depends on which hand I hold up.... So i guess I have no dominant eye?

Alicia's right about the mouse thing - we're 'ambies' on computers since we can use the mouse with the right but still write notes with the left!

Yep since we grow up in a right handed world it just becomes second nature. To do things that are meant to make things easier just makes it harder once you're used to it.

I never really realized how hard it must be for righties on the computer lol, I work on a computer and analyze prerecorded customer service phone calls and I will note as I listen to the call and move things around with my mouse. I can't imagine having to break each time I needed to write something.
