Haha, yes. Those of us in the South call all cola Coke. Although I have no love for Atlanta, I won't drink anything but a Coke.

BTW, you missed an option. In many places in the American South, it is called "Coke." Seriously. A typical conversation might go like this:
Person 1: "What do you want to drink?"
Person 2: "Coke."
Person 1: "What kind?"
Person 2: "Dr. Pepper." less

Funny...my daughter, born and raised in the south, calls everything SODA, so we were surprised the other day, at HER shock hearing her mom and I speak about POP...a term we picked up as both born and raised in Detroit!!!! A very REGIONAL thing, these words.

What do you call it, and in the thread portion, tell me where you are from, (it can be basic, like "the southwest" "The northeast" "The North Pole" " OZ" etc. less

I call it pop or soda. Most people around here (Canada) call it pop.

I was a navy brat for 17yrs and I have called it everything you have listed. However my current name for it is soda. :S lol

I mostly call it pop, although occasionally call it soda pop.

I'm in SC and we call it "soda" or "coke." And yes, *I* know that Coke is an actual brand name, but many people around me use it as a generic word for soda.
The first time I ever heard soda referred to as something else was in sixth grade when a friend had a Christmas party and asked us if we wanted "pop." We were all so confused.

Usually soda, sometimes soda pop, never just pop though.

I grew up in Ohio saying "pop", but I switched to calling it "soda" once I got to college. I think it's because my dad always used to make stupid jokes about the word pop and I never realized as a kid that I could have avoided the jokes by using a different word!

I'm from Chicago. I say pop. I will always say pop. I've had people try to change my mind. Not gonna happen!
I have a friend from Texas who's my age who calls it "Sody Water". No joke.

I was born in Gettysburg, and now live in Philadelphia - in this area everyone says soda. But in western PA it's called Pop. I have always been curious about where the dividing line was there. Is it possible to track it down to two small neighboring towns that each use one of the two terms.

Had a girl friend at the Penn State campus in Gettysburg - been there many times, but probably before you were born! I'm sure it's changed a lot since my last visit in 1974!

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I've heard all of one person from the region call it "pop." Around here, it's "soda." Actually, I've never heard it called "pop" anywhere except for that one person and (rarely) on television, and I've got relatives clear across the state.

In Australia, it's 'soft drink'
I'm thinking that it originates from being the alternative to a 'hard drink' (beer etc)

I'm Californian, but my Canadian cousins all say "pop" and we joke with each other about it.
06/20/2012
I, on Canada and I have always called it pop, soda is reserved for soda water or tonic which has carbonation but no sugar
06/20/2012
I grew up calling it "coke", having parents who called it "cola" I occasionally called it that.
My best friend who lives in Ohio calls it "pop" so I got into that habit, because we were dating and she drank it all the time, so I heard it called "pop" so often it stuck lol.
I typically call it "soda" or "coke" now, though. I tend to switch terms depending on who I'm talking to.

I'm from Texas and I've lived here most of my life. I call it coke or soda. Ya know a few words vary like pecan, route, tomato, and potato. Though "pecan" is the only one that drives me crazy.

I'm another southern girl. They are all called "coke." Every now and then I hear "cold drink."
P'Gell you should repeat this with the coke option! It looks like a common choice for your southern friends.
