We Canadians call it pop. In restaurants it's called a "soft-drink".
What do you call it? Pop? Soda? Soda Pop? Sody Pop?

Have lived in several Midwestern states, and almost all drank pop.

I'm from the Midwest and i call it pop

Another option should be Fizzy... which is said a lot in some overseas countries.

I'm from Southern-Tennessee, our area is dominated by the Coke bottling company, so many people here call all sodas "cokes".
IE: Would you like a coke?
Sure!
What kind?
Dr. Pepper.
It's weird. I've only really thought about it recently. But I've figured that the bottling company is why.

Pop here, or just Coke.

Silly question... if you're in an area where they call everything Coke, how do you go about ordering a real Coke?
"I'd like a Coke."
"What kind?"
"Er...Coca Cola flavored Coke?"
I'm from New England, it's all soda to me.

BTW, you missed an option. In many places in the American South, it is called "Coke." Seriously. A typical conversation might go like this:
Person 1: "What do you want to drink?"
Person 2: "Coke."
Person 1: "What kind?"
Person 2: "Dr. Pepper." less

From North Carolina and only call it Soda. I like in NJ now and a lot of people here call it Pop. I love when people say you have such a sweet accent. Seriously you asked me what I wanted to drink and I said soda. What accent do you get from Soda.

I'm from Illinois and we call it pop.

Over here, Coke has always specifically been called Coke.
I'm curious - where on earth did the word 'pop' come from?

I'm from upstate NY, and we call it POP!
A SODA has sparkling water, some flavoring like chocolate, and a scoop of ice cream.

I think it might have originally been called soda-pop. Some of us dropped the "soda", and some dropped the "pop".

I'll switch between "pop" and "soda." I grew up right around Chicago and all my friends called it "pop" so of course I did too. But I'll occasionally call it "soda" too.

Oh I like fizzy. Never heard that one. In Germany you ask for a cola which is any dark regular soda they have. Usually coke but I was in Southern Germany.

When I was growing up it was often "soda pop" (especially when talking with older people) but now it's usually just "soda" .. and of course in restaurants they're usually just called "soft drinks"
Anyway, there have been many surveys on this topic ... the best known being the Great Pop vs. Soda Controversy

I say soda and I'm on the east coast.
One thing that gets on my last nerve though is when people try to correct me.
"No no no it's pop!" I didn't try to correct you when you said pop...

Well I'm from Louisiana and down here, every type of "soda" is called a "coke", lol. When we ask what type of "coke" that's when you tell us what kind you want, lol.

Soda or pop....it just kinda depends. I only drink dt. coke though...so really I usually just say coke

Pop. It's pop. I'm from the Midwest, but my boyfriend, who if from New York, calls it soda. Sometimes I find myself saying that too, but then I quickly change it. Pop.
04/16/2011
I call soda soda. I only call soda a "sody pop" when I'm being silly.
04/16/2011
Oklahoma here, and I usually call them "sodas" or "cokes," and on occasion I'll call them "colas."
I used to call them "pops" as a kid, but when I would ask my brother for a "pop" he'd always punch me in the arm. "There's your pop, now what?"

If I'm watching a movie or TV show and someone is supposed to be from Chicago and calls it "soda" I know it's BS. (The same thing with "Sah-Sidge" no self respecting Chicagoan would call it "Saw-sage")
What do you call it, and in the thread portion, tell me where you are from, (it can be basic, like "the southwest" "The northeast" "The North Pole" " OZ" etc. less
