And after looking at the results so far, I have to say that I feel just a wee bit ignorant for not remembering about the menstrual cups.
Pads vs. Tampons

Same here - I use tampons and fare just fine. I am not sure I would want to wear a cup.

Tampons exclusively for the past 4 years. I've had periods since I was in the fourth grade, and I always felt sick and tired when I had to wear pads. Hated those damn things! And I had to wear one for an entire school day, because I didn't carry a purse and therefore couldn't change. 10 hours worth of period blood...not fun.
Tampons are a gift from God. I feel perfectly fine now thanks to them. less

Definitely tampons. I only wear pads when I run out of tampons due to poor planning. Pads just make me feel...gross. With tampons, it's annoying because of that little piece of string, but it beats having the feeling of wearing a diaper the whole day.

I use only Tampons. The cup sounds interesting but I'm weary to try something new simply because.. if it ain't broke....

When I was younger (early to late teens) I had a really heavy flow. Plus, it lasted for around 8 days. yech. Turned out later that it may have had something to do with a large cyst hanging out on a fallopian tube. But I digress.
At some point, the flow was bad enough to warrant an item that essentially was a diaper, though intended for periods. You still had to wear a pad with it, and it felt like it was made from paper towels.
Since that problem faded, I've become almost superstitious about pads. I will resort to a liner once in a while, mostly when it's really light. Otherwise, I've used regular tampons - I try to save some cash by getting them without the applicator, too.
I am curious about the Cup solution, so maybe when my pills turn to placebo, I'll look into it.

Instead Menstrual Cups can hold up to 12 hours worth of normal flow and stay in place during sports really well. They don't carry the toxuc shock risk. Incidentally, toxic shock is mainly the fault of the user not scrubbing her hands before inserting a tampon. I have also had toxic shock cases in the ED where a woman had sex with a tampon in and left the tampon in afterwords (forgot it and fell asleep).

I used the Instead cups while I was deciding whether to buy a reusable menstrual cup. I liked them, but it seemed like even more unrecycleable waste than pads and tampons.

IUD's make both irrelevant most of the time... When I do spot every once in a while I can easily get away with just a super thin panty liner. I love it
03/16/2010
Tampons only for me. 95% of my panties are thongs and 95% of my pants fit like a glove, so pads DO show. I used to use those thong pantie liners, but I hardly ever leak so they became a waste of money.
Tampons can dry you out though. This I don't like. I'm waiting for someone to invite one that has like nutrients in it or something.

Mostly tampons, but I have to wear pads at night because I get really heavy. I'm considering getting a Diva Cup, though.

I use tampons exclusively but do switch brands, always looking for the perfect product. At the end of my period, I do use pantie liners for security.
When I started menstruation, my mother introduced me to pads which I used for about two years. I always felt, as others have noted, there was an odor with pads and tampons are so easy and convenient to change.
My mother felt that young girls "were not developed enough" for tampons.

I mostly use tampons, but I use pads at the very end of my period when the flow is too light to insert a tampon comfortably.
08/28/2010
I used to be waaaay too scared to use tampons, so it was always pads and I could never go swimming while on my period.
Once I finally got the nerve to try out tampons, I loved them! I still use pads overnight and panty liners on the super light flow days, but I'll never go back to the days of pad-rash and such things.
The Diva Cup sounds so cool but really freaks me out...

Pretty much exclusively tampons. if my period is not heavy enough for a tampon, i'll wear a panty liner.

sadly to say, I never knew about tampons till middle school. but have been using them ever since

Yep. Same here. Tampons end up hurting. Which is sad because they're much easier to deal with.

I try to wear tampons during the day, but pads at night.

I use the Instead disposable cup sometimes, which was actually more comfortable and less painful than a tampon, although it does take some practice to get it in and out. I still keep some tampons on hand, and I like pads at night or when I'm around the house.
08/28/2010
Since I posted a few months ago, I have switched to the cup. I am currently using the Diva cup, but I have a Mia cup link on it's way to me. I love the cup! It does take some getting used to, but it's sooooo comfortable and you don't have to change a million times a day on your heavy days.
08/28/2010
I voted other because I use instead which is a cup that you insert, it's like the diva cup but disposable.
08/28/2010
It was hard to vote. I use pads, not because I think tampons are unnatural, though. I get raw from them, and end up with yeast infections if I use tampons. So, although I used to prefer tampons, I always use pads, unless I'm going swimming. I don't swim often and even less often when I have my period. (Doesn't it seem like you ALWAYS have your period when on vacation? Why is that?)

I'm also a nurse and have an incredible sense of smell. I can always smell when a woman is menstruating, too. Even if she is wearing a tampon or cup. I can also tell, by scent, if a woman is pregnant, or if she has diabetes. Advanced cancer has a very distinct odor, it gets more intense as it metastasizes. Once you smell it, you never forget it.

I can also smell liver and kideny failure before they happen (they both smell distinctly different) and other states of physical health. less

I can also smell respiratory infections in people especially children. It just smells like "sick."
Weird.

I use primarily pads, unless I'm going to be swimming or don't have an alternative. Tampons completely freak me out, so I don't use them unless I absolutely have to.
08/28/2010
Tampons, I cannot stand pads!!
Pre-kids I would wear a pad at night though, because you know I like actually SLEPT...but now I'm up so often it just doesn't matter, I'm able to change it in at a reasonable time.

I use only tampons now. I should try a cup, I know.

I'm also a huge Diva Cup fan. I highly recommend looking into it. I don't ever have a problem with leaking, so no panty liners ever again! Woohoo!
