I cannot imagine what teacher in his/her right mind wouldn't listen to a child telling them ANY part of hi/her body was itching or burning. There are so many reasons that a child's genitals might be irritated and I, for one would have some choice words with the teacher if that had ever happened to my girls. FFS the child has the right to see a nurse for issues like this and teachers should err on the side of caution!

Both my wife and myself are upset by the word vagina from time to time. Many people assume the entire vulva, labia, clitoris, etc. is called a. "Vagina". This is due to a lack of education mainly. Our good friends 7 year old daughter got in trouble for telling the teacher her "vulva is itching". She had an allergic reaction to the soap her mother was cleaning her underwear with that week. Since she wasn't allowed to the nurse, it got enflamed and infected. She even got in trouble for itching it in class. She was upset and told our friends "But ***** didn't get in trouble for telling the teacher his penis was burning (UTI I am guessing)."
This is only part of what upsets us. We could go on forever. What about you? Vote and tell why in a comment. less

Then again I got nearly reprimanded by my Mom's friend for talking quite frankly about my gelding's sheath and the new product we were using to clean it. It was a horse club meeting and the ladies were discussing their mare's vulvas, and cleaning issues, so I assumed it would be an adult's conversation. Since I was an adult AND currently studying to be a Vet Tech I assumed I should speak frankly.

MY Mom's friend announced, when I was out of ear shot, that she'd never let her teenage daughter be so frank about sex organs....my Mom looked at her and then laughed. I was 31 at the time!
My answer was: if any teenager could speak as eloquently and use correct terminology for the sexual organs of themselves or his/her animals then I'd be proud of them for making an effort to act like a young adult and treat the sex organs as part of the body as a whole...and I never went back to that narrow minded group!

I dislike that the incorrect terms are used -- it's definitely not all the same down there.

The word "vagina" doesn't upset me, but it does kind of bother me when people confuse "vagina" for "vulva."

There is a lot that upset me about this story. I hope the girl's parents are raising holy hell over this.
And while I appreciate the correct use of "vagina," I also think it has acquired a broader linguistic meaning at this point and can be used generally to refer to female genitalia.

Nope, we just laugh saying it haha

vaginal is just the socially accepted term. I think if someone got specific with me i'd probably not want to talk to them anymore...it's just a word

Improper usage of "vagina" drives me nuts.

The word doesn't bother me in the least. The way the teacher treated the girl and the double-standard in general are both wrong.
But am I really the only one who immediately thought of The Big Lebowski when they read the question?

It's just a word, a medical term that as everyone here has stated, is used as an all encompasing, catch all term for the entire female genitalia area, and is really no big deal. Most people don't get it, or care, and as such, neither do I, and I'm a doctor that knows the difference.

It does bother me a little when it's misused, but I ignore it. It's not worth the hassle.
