Does the word vagina upset you?

The word itself doesn't bother me at all. But improper use, such as using it to refer to all female genitalia does get on my nerves, especially when they are uneducated about the proper terms.

The word vagina does not bother me. People using catch-all terms or "kiddie" terms for their genitals doesn't bother me either. A child complaining of physical discomfort and not being allowed to see the school nurse bothers the hell out of me.

No, I've always been under the assumption that vagina was the correct phrase for the female genitalia, even though each individual part has its own name.

So you guys are upset over the double standard or what? I understand that. I really would be pissed if I was in the situation where my child was in trouble for saying her vulva itched but the boy wasn't for saying his penis burned.

Now, what? How does that have to do with being upset over the word vagina? I understand you're saying you get upset when people misuse the word? Umm... well, no. It's not something that bothers or upsets me.

I think, basically, we just say vagina. It's just like saying "my penis itches" instead of "my urethra itches." Who cares if someone refers to their private as vagina instead of pointing out the particular part of it. Most people, especially those with the vagina, do actually know the difference in their vagina and vulva, labia majora, minora, urethra and asshole. It's just common to say "vagina." It's kind of like just speaking of the entire area. Vagina.

So I really just don't see it as a big deal. I think misspellings tend to irk me a tiny bit more than the misuse of a word, but neither bother me to the point of actually getting upset or irritated.

I really don't understand your point here. Most people know that the vagina is the opening to the birth canal or whatever. But yet, they still use it to describe that whole area around it. It's not a lack of education because they know. That's just the way it is, it is way easier and less confusing to some to use the word vagina to describe the whole thing. I really don't think it's that big of a deal to let it bother you lol. Now, in the case of the poor little girl, yes, I would be pissed if I were her parents. I would have sued that school.

I have no issues with the word at all, but something should have been done for the poor girl! Getting in trouble for itching after SAYING she was having that issue, that's just wrong.

I have no problem with the word or its usage. I was a teacher before having our daughter and I am appalled at that teacher. I can understand that it wasn't in her comfort level to address the issue but that is why the nurse is there. The little girl should have gone to the nurse and not been in trouble or chastised. The nurse would have called mom or dad most likely since that's a tricky area for a school nurse. What a shame though. That girl was just being honest and truthful and she got in trouble for it.

I hope you set the teacher and school straight for harassing a child who used correct anatomical nomenclature.

The word doesn't upset me but what the teacher did would. I would be raising hell with the school. Poor girl shouldn't get in trouble for something she can't help.

I know the anatomical difference, but what's the big deal? I'm not an anatomy student, so I just label everything down there the vagina, and it suits me just fine.

It doesn't bother me at all, but then again, I do work in healthcare (and a lot of people I've worked with can only identify regions, and not specific parts). It infuriates me that this teacher would let a child suffer like that! The child knew exactly what bothered her, and told a "responsible" adult. Which is what kids are supposed to do!! Poor girl. I hope everything is feeling better for her.

Words are just words. I don't pay it much mind even if it's crude so long as I get the main idea of what's being spoken about. English is a living language. As far as the story the OP told though, ...the kid could've said "cunt" to describe the problem as far as I'm concerned and that teacher should've taken the situation more seriously.

I'm about accuracy - most times people use vagina when they mean vulva. It's not that hard people - know your anatomy!

But if someone is really talking about the vagina, then use the word - its not offensive in any way.

The word doesn't but the definition does. "A sheath for a sword".... my birth canal, my love tunnel is much more than a sheath for any sword.

The only time "vagina" upsets me is when someone calls the whole damn thing a vagina.

I applaud anyone whose able to get their heads up there to 'see their vagina's.

I'd rather hear someone say "vagina" instead of vulva.. especially a little girl saying her "vulva" is itching.. To me, a little girl saying vulva sounds gross... It's too descriptive...in my opinion.. So I can see why that little girl got in trouble...

The word vagina doesn't upset me, although I personally find the way it sounds isn't pleasing to the ear. But there are lots of words I don't think sound pretty, fecund, for instance -- who cares? It's a medically correct term, as is vulva & I'm glad this child was taught the correct names for her body parts & was smart enough to notice & call out the double standard!

As for the teacher, I don't think I need to repeat what everyone else has already said.
