Does the word vagina upset you?

Ladies and men may both vote.

Both my wife and myself are upset by the word vagina from time to time. Many people assume the entire vulva, labia, clitoris, etc. is called a. "Vagina". This is due to a lack of education mainly. Our good friends 7 year old daughter got in trouble for telling the teacher her "vulva is itching". She had an allergic reaction to the soap her mother was cleaning her underwear with that week. Since she wasn't allowed to the nurse, it got enflamed and infected. She even got in trouble for itching it in class. She was upset and told our friends "But ***** didn't get in trouble for telling the teacher his penis was burning (UTI I am guessing)."

This is only part of what upsets us. We could go on forever. What about you? Vote and tell why in a comment.

I kinda use "vagina" as a catch all phrase, but I know the real terms for the various parts. So it doesn't really bother me if people say "vagina" when they mean something else. However, I would be LIVID if that happened to my child. Like, I'd be going and cursing some teachers out for real.

Words never upset me. Life's too short. That teacher should be reprimanded.

It doesn't upset me, per se, but I always say to myself "you mean vulva" when I hear/see someone say vagina when what they're really referring to is a vulva. I would, of course, prefer accurate terminology be used... but that's just never gonna happen.

And I agree - shame on that teacher!

The word doesn't bother me since that's what most people are used to using anyway, so there's really no need to get upset over a word.

If that happened to my child, I'd be cursing and shouting up a storm.

That's an unfortunate situation, but it doesn't mean that the word "vagina" upsets me. Why the hell would it? Because an ignorant teacher got upset at a child for saying vulva? People use catch all phrases for things sometimes, especially when referring to genitals, and it's really not that big of a deal. I am well aware that there are different parts that make up my genitals with different medical and scientific terms, but...so what? I could say that about the rest of my body. This teacher just did something foolish. So?

I often say vagina to mean everything and don't specify. doesn't bother me. but I hate when kids are taught nicknames for genitalia.

The word vagina doesn't upset me as long as I know what they're talking about. But then I did come from a household that used "private parts" as a catch all term for genitals.

I would be upset at the teacher, the girl was using the correct medical term for her problem, not being vulgar. You wouldn't say your mouth was hurting if only your tongue was in pain. Being precise when something hurts will only help the physician/nurse.

No, but the word itself makes some men uncomfortable. "Vagina."

Yes, they don't like hearing it and find it difficult to say whereas without batting an eye a man will refer to his "dick" or his "rod" or his "Johnson".

The fact that people use "vagina" incorrectly to mean the entire vulva upsets me, yes. The fact that people think words like "vagina" and "vulva," and "clitoris" are bad words upsets me. The story you told about the little girl is awful and that teacher should be fucking ASHAMED of hirself.

Using words incorrectly doesn't bother me (just means inadequate information). The teacher's reaction, on the other hand, does.

The child getting in trouble is what's upsetting. Using the word vagina to refer to vulva, labia, etc, I don't find that upsetting, just mildly annoying. Wish more people/children were taught all the terms, like your friend's child

This! It doesn't upset me, but I always want to correct them! The teacher should be the one in trouble; if penis is an allowed word in the classroom, all terms for the female genitalia should be, too.

Agreed. If it was so bad she got an infection, surely we're not talking about mild discomfort. Why didn't they call the mom? When my son fell off the monkey bars and hurt his upper thigh, the nurse wouldn't check it for legal reasons, but she knew it needed to be checked, so she called me and had me come do it. Why didn't the school at least do that for her?

Nope, as long as it's used for the general region and not a specific area.
