Do you feel it is appropriate not to wear a bra in public?

Contributor: SecretToyLover2 SecretToyLover2
A lot of women I know, including myself, find that bras are actually hurting us and not helping us. For the longest time I was told that they were necessary to support breasts and improve the posture of the spine and shoulders. My chiropractor said he was a part of a study (not in the study, but monitoring it) a few years ago and they found that women who didn't wear bras actually had less back problems.

Now, this isn't the reason for my not wanting to wear one. My reason is that I feel more comfortable without one. But for some reason, some people seem to have a huge issue with seeing someone's nipples get hard under their shirt. Most men find it sexy, including my hubby. But I had two comments made to me at the grocery store that I should wear a bra and stop showing off my goods underneath my LOOSE t-shirt. I mean, it's not like I was wearing a tank top. And if I was, who cares?

But anyway, enough of me. What do you all think? Voting is not private, but please explain your reasoning.

It's your choice. It shouldn't matter what anyone thinks but you.

I am a woman. I think that as long as you're wearing an appropriate shirt, it doesn't really matter. If you are more comfortable without or there is a medical reason why you do not want to wear a bra, you shouldn't have to. Who cares if other people don't like it, they can stop looking at your boobs!

Oops I meant to also vote it is not inappropriate I thought I checked that one. Guess not! And the reason the shirt matters, is you don't wanna do it wearing a shirt where the boobies pop out

AMEN! I mean, if it was like a shirt that was not appropriate in general, even with a bra, I could understand. But if it's a regular shirt/top then wtf cares!

I definitely feel like every woman should be able to make that decision herself, but at the same time I wouldn't want to go to the grocery store and see a women with big boobs and tiny tops letting everything hang out. I'm kind of conflicted.

Well, aside from wearing something EXTREMELY revealing and inappropriate to wear. For example (this actually happened) I went into Wal-Mart and a woman was walking around in what might as well have been a bra and had DD tits. No one said anything, which I found odd. But parents were shutting all of their children's eyes because her breasts were revealed almost completely.

So what I mean is, wearing an appropriate shirt. A t-shirt, hoodie, tank top, etc. that fits your size. Do you think that is okay?

This reminds me of a run-in I had with my sister. When she remarried, she gained a step-son in the deal. He's just hitting his formative teen years and I *never* wear a bra (there's absolutely no reason for me to, I have small breasts). She gave me the most scathing look and was all "why aren't you wearing a bra around your nephew?". To which I promptly replied, "I'm in my mother's house, I didn't know you were even going to be here today and do you really think it's the first time he's seen nipples? Do you put on a bra first thing in the morning?" She really didn't have anything to say about that. I was just like "wtf?", I really did not understand why she was giving me such a hard time over something so dumb.

To be honest I'd rather not be out in public and see someone's breasts swinging around, and nipples poking through their shirt. It would offend my delicate gay sensibilities.

Ultimately it's a personal decision what people choose to wear though.

I probably spent years of my life not wearing bras. I wear them while I'm nursing a baby, for support and because I leak and they hold the breast pads better than trying to make them stay without a bra.

I wear one more now, but I've had three kids and I want things to be "back in place." I think I look more put together and my breasts are a little higher and rounder in a well made bra. I never wear one to bed (except during the first trimester of pregnancy, because I get so sore.)

If I'm going to be home, I don't wear one. If I'm working or going out, I will. I often end up taking the damn thing off when I'm sitting on the couch in the evening so I am comfortable. I often have two or so of them sitting on the stair basket waiting to go back upstairs.

I do believe it is an individual decision but I don't like seeing a large breasted woman in a tiny top bopping and flopping all over the place. I think there needs to be some control.

Does not bother me at all, if a woman is comfy without one then fine. I do worry about the long term but it is a choice that all women must make and I respect that.

Theory has it that it doesn't matter if a woman wears a bra or not, the elastic tissues that make breasts perky and pretty when we're young break down after our childbearing prime is over. Some studies suggest that wearing a bra that keeps breasts at attention all day long do more harm than good because when the bra is removed there is suddenly this weight and pull on the skin that wasn't there for however many hours prior. Bottom line? It's going to sag no matter what, at some point in our lives (men too!), just be comfy!

I'm small chested and almost always never wear a bra. I will wear one to the grocery store if I'm in a tighter top, but if it's baggy I don't worry about it.

I think it depends on what you are doing that day.Like say if you are going to be jumping or running but, other then that it doesn't matter whether you wear one or not.I almost never wear one because I find that it's more comfortable to not wear one.

Be comfortable, just be sure they are not falling out for everyone to see. I would never not wear a bra in public, but I also have really big breast, so they might poke out of the bottom of my shirt. (Ok not that big)

If a girl feels comfortable walking around town without a bra, more power to her! Personally, I like bras, they keep my boobs in place and keep them from bouncing around... So I don't do that, but more power to those who do.

Personally, I only go braless at home. In public, I do not like to be bouncing, flipping or flopping (and I find it painful to boot), and I do NOT like my nipples to show - EVER! So I'm picky about bras because there are a lot of bras that allow nipples to still show when hard.

It's definitely your choice, so I would never tell someone else it's inappropriate. I do know that I prefer to wear a bra out and about for my own personal reasons.

Personally I don't feel comfortable wearing anything without a bra unless it's really tight fitting/has a decent shelf bra inside it. My DD's hurt if they're left unsupported but that's just my personal choice. Other ladies can do whatever they want in terms of bra wearing as far as I'm concerned. Just don't have your tits free under a see through shirt in front of my kid, I may have to hurt you for that one

It's really up to the woman. There are times when I am grossed out by braless women at work, but usually, it's not just that they're braless (there are other issues such as hygiene). Anyway, I don't feel comfortable braless in public, but to each her own.

I don't like everybody knowing when I get cold, so I always wear a bra if I'm going to be wearing something where it might be visible at all. I don't wear a bra all the time though. Most of the time if I'm bumming around the house I don't have one on, but I usually put one on to leave the house if I'm not going to be wearing a large t-shirt or something.

I don't have a problem with seeing nipples through a shirt but if someone has very large breasts it's just unattactive to have them not in a bra.

I'm sorry, it's just not something I want to see from a complete stranger. It's also something I don't want a complete stranger to see of me.

With that said, I would never go up to someone and make a comment about it, cause it's their body, they can present themselves however they want to, none of my business.

I hate going out without one. I don't mind if someone else does, but I have to admit that it's kind of gross if they're wearing a revealing shirt with saggy boobs and pointy nipples :/

I don't mind whether or not women decide to wear bras, I think we get much to fussy about seeing things like a little nipple (which could even show through a shirt if you are wearing a bra). Personally if I had to worry about this I'd be thinking more about the shirt I was wearing and my comfort than what other people thought.

Personally, I prefer to wear a bra at all times in public so as to be comfortably supported, and in case I get cold (ahem). However, if one does not want to, that's their prerogative.

Good grief they are tittys not guided, heat seeking sex missiles. EVERY woman, and some men, have them why are we so damn prudish as a country? We would not lose our damn minds or go sexually insane if every woman in America took off her bra and shirt...for fucks sweet sake we CAN control ourselves.
