Do you feel it is appropriate not to wear a bra in public?

You and Airen make excellent points. Why is it considered "OK" for women with small breasts to go braless and women with large breasts are supposed to go full tilt burka on their boobs?

Seems very unfair.

As for the poster who said people were "covering their children's eyes" WTF? Why? A breast is just part of a women. My children all breastfed well into toddlerhood and went to breastfeeding support group meetings I lead with me. They were all exposed to breasts the way they were meant to be used (uh, feeding babies) from, literally, the moment they were born. They have always accepted breasts as part of life, a good part of life. I wouldn't "cover a child's eyes" from a floppy breast display.... but then again, I don't ever go into WalMart....

Breasts are used to feed children. WHY would you want to "protect" a child from the most optimal food source in the world?

I don't get it?

My kids were raised in a very breastfeeding friendly atmosphere and have no.... fear of breasts. They are just a part of the body.

Those who insist on over sexualizing the breast (as in most cultures the breast is no more "sexual" than any other part of a woman) contribute to this anti-breastfeeding and anti-woman thinking.

THANK YOU (for several things: introducing me to the term "full tilt boob burka," agreeing with me about the double standard where big breasts/little breasts are concerned, the WalMart joke, leading a breastfeeding support group, teaching your children that breasts aren't obscene)

Before my breast reduction (DD's), I would go braless, and people would make comments about my breasts. I was with my mother one time in a doughnut shop and the clerk actually whispered some obscene joke to my MOTHER about MY breasts (W.T.F.?) and she went into some spiel about how I needed to start wearing a bra. I was just going through puberty, hadn't really formed a self image yet, wasn't really aware that I even HAD boobs, and here I was being immediately thrust into self-consciousness and shame.

No one has said anything to me about my being braless since my reduction (I have C cups now, but they are more like B's in proportion to my very large frame).....but I have gotten some cold glances from mothers and older women that I've read as, "You filthy harlot! What are you doing out during the day? Can't you see I'm trying to teach my (boy) children that breasts are only lurid sex bags or (girls) a source of great shame?"

I'm glad that I came to the logical conclusion that breasts serve both sexual and nonsexual purposes, JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER BODY PART (clitoris aside, but then I'll never be walking around in public with my clit exposed, will I?), so they aren't dirty. Certainly nobody around here was going to share that useful nugget of information with me. I'm repressed enough without thinking my nature-given body is a conduit of pure visual evil.

I personally consider the mouth to be the most sexual part of someone's body (apart from the brain, but that's not exactly on display), which may be strange, considering people's mouths are constantly on display and should hence be "desexualized" or whatever, but, like most people in most situations, I CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SEXUAL AND NONSEXUAL CONTEXT. Id est, if breasts weren't regarded as sin bags, instead regarded as another body part that is multifunctional, there would be a lot of time freed up to worry about important things.

That went on rather longer than I had intended.

I've just always felt more comfortable with the support, nipples poking was always a little funny but never too big of a deal for me. Like seeing random erections.

I know! I mean, my breasts aren't small but they aren't flopping out of my shirt either. The way I see it is, it's comfortable, who gives a crap, and my shirts are all decently covering what they need to.

AMEN! I don't understand! I think a lot of the people reading are automatically picturing women in tight little tank tops. I wear very *sorry if this sound braggish* dressed up clothing. You can see my nipple, but hardly any of it is skin tight. I just get these looks from people. And comments, like today "Oh, honey I think you forgot to put your bra on! I'll wait for you, it's okay!" from my friend Sarah. My breasts don't sag (yet at least), they are very perky, and my nipples are always hard. So I'm basically doing just as great without a bra as I am with one, except for that my nipples show. But I mean, we see guys all the time!

This reminds me of a conversation I witnessed between one of my friends and her mother. She was going in to college in a week or two and was walking around her house in a t-shirt and jeans and no bra while she packed, and her mother and aunt were livid! They talked about her "Devil's Pillows" and how if she walked around like that on campus people would think she was a slut, and her reputation would be ruined. I was shocked that they could have this attitude, as when we visited the campus in question it looked like very few women there were wearing bras, and no one cared.

Oh lord. They actually called them "devil's pillows?" Both of my grandmothers have made negative comments to me about my bralessness, but at least no ridiculous nicknames were used.

I think that you should definitely go "as you are" and how comfortable you feel with it.

The problem that I have is when the woman's breasts CLEARLY need the support lol. I'm not trying to be mean about it, hell I am one of those women that have breastfed three children-there isn't much left and what is left of them isn't in the same place it used to be on my chest lol.

In certain cases, I would find it in appropriate. If you're going to a function like Church or something? Maybe I would say wear one.

If you have on a shirt that is somewhat more revealing or that may show your breasts in the event that you bend over or maybe through an arm sleeve or something, then I would say wear one then too.

As long as you're "covered" I don't see the problem with it.

I wish I could go without one! LMAO. Ugh that would make life so much easier, and more comfy. Not to mention, cheaper-have you seen some of the price tags on these things? Geeeez!

Since I started nursing mine are one size one minute and another the next! (Engorgement) So wearing a bra either proves too tight or too lose sooner or later. Also, a bra (even a nursing bra) just gets in the way when it's time to feed my baby. So I have found myself going out more and more without a bra.
My husband loves it, and I'm used to getting weird looks/comments anyway. Now if hubby were around when said looks/comments were made, according to him, person saying/looking would soon be regretting because "they're just jealous, babe, and I'll gladly kick anyone's @$$ who dares make you feel uncomfortable just cause they want your body." HAHA! I love my husband.
Anyway it's your body, if you want to let the girls run free, as long as your covered in one way or another, there's no law saying you HAVE to wear a bra. And frankly the more I go without the more I find it sexy. Why make yourself uncomfortable for the sake of others who have the ability to LOOK AWAY?

Sorry, but WTF? Ageist much?

Maybe all us women should just quit going outside once we hit 35 as to not offend those who only want to see The Young and The Perky.

Cripes, that's insulting.

Women don't have to mold their lives around what you think is inappropriately sexual. When you see shirtless men at the beach do you think they should "keep that in the bedroom"? Why should women have to behave any differently? Women shouldn't be restricted because they have breasts, get over it.

Men don't have to wear things that keep us from seeing hard nipples under their shirts, why should we?

I thin it's perfectly fine for women not to wear bras. Their body, their choice.
