Do you dye your hair?

Contributor: Jul!a Jul!a
Self explanatory title really. But tell us about everything anyway! Do you love to have wild colors that make you easier to spot in parking lots? Shy away from anything that brings too much attention to you? Cover your grays? Show your grays off?

I've been dying my hair forever, and I'm curious how many of you do it too.

Yes, I do. Have been doing since I was fifteen because I was lucky enough to have family friends who were cosmetologists. I spent my teens with cranberry-grape color hair, and have moved into more natural reds in my 20's and 30's. I did get purple streaks in my mid-20's just because I felt like it. Right now I'm a 'medium auburn' according to the Colorsilk chart, and I prefer the darker reds due to how they pale my skin up. (Note: I am NOT wearing pale foundation in my Halloween picture on the costume thread - I am naturally that pale. In Florida.)

So ... yes, my red isn't natural despite the freckles and complexion and Irish temper and all that. I was born strawberry-blond and it turned into a hideous dull dishwater blond that made me look washed out and sickly. It had to change while I was in high school. People can't imagine me being anything BUT a redhead.

But red color is such a pain in the ass to keep up ...

Agh I clicked the wrong button. I meant to say that "I have dyed my hair in the past and will continue to do so." Oops!

I dyed my hair a lot in high school- blonde highlights, (on my naturally brown hair) chocolate brown, BRIGHT red. I stopped about 5 years ago, but about a month ago I gave into temptation and dyed my hair red again. I need to do it again because it didn't come out as red as I wanted it to. I usually just do the semi-permanent "wash out" ones because it makes me feel a little better about the amount of damage I'm doing, lol.

I used to dye it in jr. high and high school. Most of the time it did not look very good on me and I was mostly doing it to rebel. I have a very pretty shade of brown naturally so I'm going to leave it alone for awhile. I'm not going to rule it out in the future but I don't think I will dye it anytime soon.

Also I think I might get fired if I dyed my hair pink or something.

I dye my hair. I went to the salon once and paid $80 for highlights, but now I just do it on my own. I tried to dye my hair a light blond but it turned out a very pretty honey brown (guess thats what happens when god wants you to always have brown hair lol).

I have done it twice from a box and once in a salon that was highlights not my whole head. I voted I won't do it again because there was not a unlikely to do it again option. One reason I don't plan to do my whole head again is that my natural hair color is very pretty and I get more compliments on it that way. I did the cheap boxes twice (the kind that mostly wash out in about a month), one a bit lighter, and one a bit darker for a slight change but always wanted it out by the following week lol. I might do highlights or low lights in the future, but a reason I'm not likely is because the one time I did it it cost me $119 for a cut and the highlights. then you have to go back and get it fixed when your hair grows in...I don't want to keep paying for an investment like that when I want it just as a temp change.

I don't like crazy colors for myself or others. It rarely looks good IMO. It reminds me of clowns and cartoon characters. One person I did like that looked good with crazy hair is the girl from what not to wear that is a hair stylist. She had the cutest pixie do in a deep blue. Idk if anyone knows who I am talking about though lol. That's a special case, I can't even imagine it looking good on anyone else.

I dyed my hair bright red for Halloween a few years back but that was the only time. Now I am thinking about getting rid of the grey but I wish the wife would just let me shave and polish it instead.

As much as I love grey on other people (men with salt and pepper.. YUM *drools*) I dont like it on myself. I am 31 and have way too many shinny (REALLY shinny. Like so much that sometimes I think crows might be eyeballing them) greys on my head for my liking.

I do at home color. I always have. When I was young I would do just about every color I could get my hands on. At the moment I am doing a really deep brown that I like. prior to this I was blonde. So I have dual purpose. I get bored with the color and I have grey to cover.

I've been dying my hair since I was like, 12. My natural hair color is a boring (in my opinion) brown color, and since I get really bored with my appearance really easily, and hair color is easy enough to change, that's what I normally do. I've been just about every natural color under the shining sun, and a wide range of unnatural colors as well. Pink seems to work really well for me, and blue doesn't look too bad. The purple looked pretty sweet. I've never purposely dyed it green as of yet, but the blues have faded to an awkward green before, lol.

I've also had my hair dyed professionally by students at cosmetology schools, as well as friends and relatives that were licensed cosmetologists. For whatever reason, professional colors just don't seem to stick with my hair very well, so I prefer the box dyes.

I'm about due to dye mine again. I typically go for a natural color, and mine ends up golden. I'm contemplating a change for this winter though, and thinking about going red.

Before I first started to dye my hair, I had tight curls like a telephone cord. Well, after a few dyes, my hair was ruined. It has taken me 3 years to get my curls somewhat decent, but unfortunately, they shall never be what they once were.

HAHA I had to check the sharpie option...

I don't even know what my natural color is anymore. I was a towhead when I was a kid (super blonde) but I got into my rebellious gothic stage and preceded to dye it fire engine red/ rainbow religiously so since then I have mellowed out but I still keep it dark cherry red , especially in the winter time. I let it grow out for a while but I usually end up dying it again...

So I have been trying to keep one color and just keeping up with the roots so I don't end up coloring my scalp with a sharpie!

Yep, let's see...I'm a natural brunette. I dyed my hair black just before high school graduation, and then a few months later had it bleached and dyed red-orange at a salon. I kept it like that for about 5 months, then dyed it back to its natural colour.

This summer, I got a drastic haircut and bleached a streak on either side in the front. Then I dyed the streaks a magenta purple. After it faded and I re-did it a few times, I dyed the streaks a darker grape purple. Still that colour! I love it.

I dyed my hair so much that it was fried to a point of no return for over a month. After a few more incidents like that I finally decided to stay away from hair dye. My main problem being is that whenever I want to change something about myself (personality wise or something like that) I always change my hair first.

My Dad would never allow it when I lived at home, for some bizarre reason, so I've had it colored constantly since I got married 17 years ago. I don't actually know what my natural color is anymore, because it was still changing color into adulthood. It used to be dirty blonde, then almost brown, then back to an ashy dark blonde. My roots now appear to be brown, but I try to banish them ASAP so I can remain in denial regarding the gray popping up. It's weird because I have fair skin and green eyes, and ash is like the worst possible match for my coloring. I've even shocked hair stylists by how WRONG my natural color is for me. I do well as a redhead, so usually do a dark red-brown with blonde and red chunky highlights in the winter and a light copper with blonde chunks in the summer.

I've been getting my hair dyed since my late 30's because of the grays. And I probably will continue to get it done until I die.

I dye my hair but ONLY the tips. The majority of my hair has never been touched by dye and is completely virgin. But before I get my hair cut (or when I feel like it), I dye the tips fun colors and then either chop them off or let them fade out.

Actually I've got bright red Manic Panic hair right now, and am planning to bleach it and dye it blue next with Splat! hair dye. I've had green hair, Cruella De Ville styled hair, pink hair, bleach white hair, black hair, orange hair, purple hair, spray on and wash out hair...natural hair...I can't stand my natural hair color which is dirty blonde, and my favorite hair color by far is the red of this heart.

I have dyed my hair many times. I've had it bright red, blood red, hot pink, blonde, black, dark brown, auburn, and highlights. Right now I'm letting it grow out of the last dye which was an auburn. I don't plan on ever using permanent color again for a while..though I know eventually I will. But for right now I am enjoying the natural dirty blonde coming in and have no desire to dye it again any time soon. I think it'll probably be a few years at least before I ever dye it again...maybe not until I get grey hair.

i have dyed my hair forever, Ive done every color of the rainbow and just dyed it back to brown from hot pink about a month ago. i love unnatural hair colors and absolutely love showing my personality with my hair. i have a ton of friends who went to cosmetology school and my husbands aunt owns her own shop so Ive had my fair share of tips and tricks. my hair is taken care of well and i do condition a lot so its still shiny and soft..

I'm not sure what you meant by "natural" or "unnatural" colors. When I think "natural" I think of henna.

Do you mean like, pink and stuff?

I used to dye my hair shades of red, maroon, "Black Cherry" (more cherry than black) But, now I like "Bright Black" from L'Oreal's Feria which is a cool black with blue highlights. The blue gets rid of all the red in my hair, and covers the gray nicely.

I also just bought a bottle of Beyond the Zone Color Jam 2 in Midnight Blue, because the blue highlights in the dye was starting to fade. I didn't bleach my hair out (I'm Mediterranean, we do NOT bleach out well. We turn copper.) I just used it as a rinse, it didn't take as well as I would have liked, I think next time I need to leave it on longer.

I'm looking for a job right now (the home business is going bust and my health won't tolerate hospital shifts at this point) so I am trying to keep it fairly "normal" looking. A little blue or purple highlights won't hurt though.

At this point, my once red-brown hair is heavy black. I love it like this.

I've been coloring my hair to one degree or another since I was 13 and got in a bad fight with a bottle of Sun In (do they even still sell that?). My dark blonde hair turned ORANGE and my mom let me color it to get rid of the orange.

All during high school I dyed it myself, mostly very blonde. Then in college I started paying someone just for blonde highlights. I don't do highlights on my own, I don't think I have the talent or knowledge for it—just like I don't do my own dental work. lol

At age 30, I went red... dark, deep, wine colored red and usually with lots of blonde streaks. I loved it, but it's hard to keep up and expeeeensive!

Going back to blonde, where I am now, was painful, but now I go mostly with blonde highlights or this fall, my color guy talked me into adding red lowlights.

Personally, I love bright shocks of color, natural or not, in people's hair—especially Victoria and Carrie Ann's pink.

Thank you, Lauren.

I enjoy being told I look like a clown and a cartoon character. It makes my day.

Has anyone ever told you that if you have nothing nice to say you should say nothing at all?

For real, woman.

It is one thing to say you don't like such colors for yourself but to insult those who DO like funky colors is beyond rude. To belittle those of us who do, indirectly calling us names and putting us down, is downright unacceptable.

It would be... quite easy... for me to start listing things I do not like about YOUR looks. I refrain - because there is no place for that sort of insult here, no reason to pick anyone apart for how they look or what they choose to wear or the make up or hair dye they themselves obviously enjoy. It's tasteless, tactless and foul.

I dyed my hair varying shades of plum and dark red from the time I was fourteen until I was 22 years old and three weeks shy of my due date with my second son. I also put in blonde streaks on occasion. From that point -- July 1st, 2006 -- until last spring, I let my hair be its natural color. I did this for three reasons:
1) so my husband could see my natural color
2) so I could have a break from so much hair maintenance
3) so my hair could have a break from all of the harsh chemicals!

Then, last spring, I discovered the amazingness of Manic Panic, Zone, and Special Effects. Since then my hair has been some shade of raspberry or plum, and I LOVE it. (The hot pink my white shower curtain now is, well, that's another story altogether...)
