Do you dye your hair?

I don't want to lose the blue highlights in my dyed black hair. I was wondering if I wanted to Gloss it, if it would either destroy the blue in my dyed black hair or lighten it. I don't want to lighten black, it goes gray. (my natural hair is kind of "Italian Dark Brown with some Red, flecked with....salt" but I haven't seen it in a long time) But, I now dye it Blue Black and wanted to try some Gloss.

I have no plans to go lighter. I'm Mediterranean and light hair doesn't look good on me.

Thank you for all your help. You really know what you are doing.

Natural red head and never want to dye it other wise. I've never felt the need to change my hair color because I already see so many women try to get my color and never get there.

Wow...that's really a fabulous look on you. I had to look at your profile and check your age. I tried doing something like that either this time last year or the year before, and it...wasn't quite as successful. I actually had a stylist do it, and she made me sign a consent form first. I'd post a picture, but it's honestly so god-awful I wouldn't want anybody seeing it. It was, of course, right before I went to visit my parents for the holidays, so I was "Cyndi" (Lauper, to the young'uns out there) to my Mom, and "The Parrot" to my dad. It was deserved, though, because of the color, and the cut wasn't that terrific either. You're 9 years younger than me and thin. I think theoretically you can pull off something like that when you're pushing 40, or if you're young and overweight. When you're old AND fath, though, it's just not really something easy to pull off gracefully.

I also love the way you've played up the blues on your eyes--it's a striking contrast. I'm also amazed you found more pink-hued blusher and lipstick that actually DOESN'T clash with the hair. Great look, and you're lovely.

And you did that yourself? How do you get such great results?

I had my hair dyed in a salon on two occasions, both were disasters. I will never trust a salon to colour my hair again. They were removing black dye, bleaching and dyeing my hair blue. ... it came out orangy, greeny and brown, with blue streaks the first time. And they were supposed to put highlights in my hair the second time, didn't use a toner and I just had strawberry blonde streaks. Fun fun!

Wow...there are some gorgeous ladies here! I really LOVE the blue and the purple, and the style of cut you chose, or wearing or not wearing glasses, just goes so well with the colors they don't even really look radical or weird--they look like they belong on you; and the two looks are so completely different, I would never have thought you were the same person.

I like the Fuchsia on you, too--it comes out a really nice shade of a reddish-purple toned mahogany. My husband wanted me to color my hair that deep purpleish red color that does not exist in nature. I held off, because it's usually such a phony look, doesn't work on a lot of people who choose it anyway; and it's rarely done well, which is part of why I wanted to avoid something that dark. I did try it once, and it wasn't as disasterous as the red, but it still made me look like I was trying (miserably) to look like a goth (or is it officially 'emo' these days? Again, though, with the nice casual hairstyle, you pull it off brilliantly--it doesn't have the 'synthetic' look common in this color. I's attention grabing because it's striking, so it draws you notice it, bit it doesn'd confuse you or make you stare, because it fits you so well.

The red probably could have used more purple, pink, and maybe even a couple blond highlights, because it kind of looks like a wig. On the other hand, the cut frames your face perfectly, and the color wrapped around it really accentuates your facial features, even when you don't seem to be wearing a lot of makeup. So I don't subjectively like the color , but it showcases your face beaautifully, and you really have very attractive features. especially your eyes, and they draw my attention more than the hair.

And again, did you do those yourself?

Thanks so much I'm really not thin, I just carry my weight mostly in my hips and thighs LOL! I think that anyone can carry off bright hair, you just need to find the right shade for you. Sometimes darkening it just slightly so that it looks semi "normal" but then catches the light and really pops is a better look than something that can't even begin to look normal (like when I went pink...there was noooo hiding that one! the red could pass as a bright auburn under certain light)

The pink one I was actually a little awkward about, it's SO out there that it's hard to really pull off a full head of magenta hair! I think when I went to see family I would always put it in a pony tail..which of course does not cover it really but it at least would look a little muted against my scalp than if it was out in the open with sunlight hitting it! The red hair I found to be more suiting to me and everyone loved it and complimented me on it. I think they all probably thought the pink was a mistake LOL. I would however love to have that pink again, but only on the underside of my hair and maybe a few streaks, it's just too much for a full head of it! At least for me as a mom of three who doesn't really like attention drawn to her..which yes I know is ironic considering I love loud hair!

I did do both myself, it's really easy with the Loreal HiColor as long as you know how to dye your hair at all basically. It was no different dyeing it those colors than say to darken my hair from light brown to a dark brown because the HiColor lightens the hair as it dyes it, it's super easy! As for the dyeing itself I've been dyeing my own hair since I was about 15 so I have a lot of experience with knowing how to get all the spots. It's easiest to just go in sections and comb it through (I use a big "shower comb" I got from Sally's) to make sure it's even. I then have my husband check it to make sure there's no spots in the back that I missed. When I was younger my best friend and I would dye our hair together so that we could check each other.

And thanks for the compliments about the make up too...I actually found that blush about two years ago and have been buying it ever since..it's one of the only ones I can find for a decent price that doesn't have sparkles in it..I absolutely hate sparkly blush. It's Revlon cream blush if you're interested, the one I have is actually a pretty dark deep red in the container but it goes on with a nice dewey pinkish/red hue.

I've seen the same thing happen to people at salons. It all depends on if the person working there knows what they're doing. Some definitely do but then others...wow it's just insane..it makes me scared to go to one down here because I am not from this area and I don't know what places can and cannot be trusted.

Yep I've gotten pretty good at it over the years, except that I always have a ring around my hairline for the first day or two! The only way I can avoid that is if I don't get all the hair dyed there right to the scalp and I'd much rather have a ring for a few days then have dirty blonde hair peaking out of otherwise colored hair.

Try smearing some Vaseline around your hairline, just don't get it into your hair or you will end up with small voids where it has coated your hair.

Yea, the problem is that right at the hair line I have little thin hairs and those won't get dyed unless I put dye there. So the vaseline trick doesn't work because the hair is what needs to get dyed, it's just because it's right at the hair line it's not thick enough to avoid the dye from showing through. I usually just make sure that I do my hair in a way that it's not visible for the day or two that it takes to wash off the scalp

Naturally dark blonde, but mine's currently red-brown with highlights. I might go black/dark brown with red or blue streaks next.

I've been dying/highlighting on and off for 10 years now, but haven't found anything I like enough to keep more than a few months. I get bored easily.

I like the idea, and really have no better plans for my future at this point. Alternating between brooding and isolating myself because I'm troubled and saddened by the state of our world, and being animatedly loquatious, circumlocutory, and generally unintelligible enough to fool people into thinking I'm profound might actually work. I'm very good at confusing people, even when I'm trying, and I'm very bad at keeping my mouth shut or saying ANYTHING concisely so I may actually already have many of the skills required to be a successful cult leader. If you say anything confidently, enthusiastically, and repeatedly enough, cryptically and enigmatically, even if it's utterly and completely incomprehensible, it's easy to make people do what you want, because they think they don't understand you because THEY are not smart or deep enough, and not because YOU are just not making any sense.

I certainly would expect they will pay us, because we'd be a pretty lame excuse for a cult without taking every penny our followers have.

That's what I did this morning. I redid the blue under the black (or over it) it isn't really overt, but it did what I wanted it to do, except I wanted the tips blue and they didn't take. I didn't bleach it out, though. I still wanted the black, with the blue highlights.

I usually put either skin creme or Vaseline around my hair line, then I line up either cotton pad with soap on them or wads of toilet paper with soap, so I can get any drips that get on my skin right away.

I haven't been out in the sun today (not only did it rain but I didn't even go out. Pathetic.) I think the blue will show up better in the sun.

Have you tried either foil or perm papers to protect your skin? I remember my aunt using them a long time ago? You could put the foils or perm paper right up your skin so the dye won't get on it all over. (She was a Cosmetologist, when they used to call them Beauticians.)

Yea basically the issue is that around my hairline I have a thinner line of hair and that hair needs to be dyed or it just looks ridiculous. It's the hair right by my temples and then I have the slightest widow's peak too. The hair there isn't as thick as the rest of my head, it's kind of a bit more sparse and it's super fine almost like baby hair there, and so the skin under the hair shows through. That's where I get the dye on so there's really nothing I could do to prevent it other than getting REALLY skillfull at applying the dye to the hair only and somehow getting it all the way to the root but not onto the scalp where the root meets. Because it's not an issue of getting the dye where there is no hair, I use a brush for the front and am really careful so that the dye doesn't get onto my skin. I doubt I'll ever achieve that though lol and so there will always be a little dye for a day or two! I work at home so I just do it at the beginning of my work week..I'm usually so packed full of stuff around the house to do that I don't see daylight for a few days anyway!

I would love to try out different hair colors, because some of them look really good and I can't help but think there is probably a color out there that would look tons better on me than my natural color, but I just won't do it. I feel like healthy hair will always look better in a natural color than damaged hair with an awesome looking color and I just don't think you can have the best of both worlds, because sooner or later (many times sooner) the dying will have a noticeable effect on the healthy-ness of your hair. It's just not worth it to me, but I wish that didn't have to be the case

I'm not in hairdressing anymore, I'm doing a bachelors in psychology

I love glossings, I usually go with a chocolate brown to jazz up my very dull natural brwon but the last one I went with was a firey red. Glossings wash out over time so I lost the fireyness of the red, its more bland and washed out but I don't want to do my hair until the holidays. For all those family pictures!

Also! Baby wipes! I know it sounds weird but, if you can get to the main spots as soon as the dye is in and kind of wipe around the hairs, baby wipes will get most of it off.

Makes me a bit nervous about what is in the wipes that we're using on our babies genitals but...

They're a standard in my bathroom for dye spots and make up removal.

Lmao. I am at this point greatly disappointed that you are so geographically inconvenient. I would love to have coffee with you. I think it would be a riot.

And you are right, if we didn't take those poor saps for all that they had, and then convince them that they needed to drink Kool Aid in order to ascend to a higher plain of existence, we would be a poor excuse for a cult indeed. Although, I rather like the idea of spiking the Kool Aid with LSD, as opposed to cyanide. However it would be rather difficult to run off and begin a new cult with all the old members still alive and fully capable of identifying us.

That's never occurred to me. Only the smell of baby wipes reminds me of....diapers.

I wasn't crazy about using them on baby genitals, either. I used to make up a container of a lot of distilled water, a couple of drops tea tree oil (for germs) Dr Bronner's Hemp Castile Soap (just a few drops) baking soda (to Ph balance it) and sometimes some glycerin for softness (back then I had no idea glycerin was irritating to some people.) I'd dip a wash cloth or paper towel into this and clean my kids. I changed it every day or two, so it would stay nice, and kept in in one of those heated baby wipe wraps, inside an old baby wipe container.

The baby wipe idea would be great, if I could find some that didn't smell like baby wipes. Maybe those feminine hygiene wipes?
