I ended up getting a netbook for school. My older, bigger laptop now sits happily on my desk all day. I love the portability of my netbook; I don't even notice the extra weight in my bag, but I can still write papers and do research during my downtime at school...or goof off during class, or whatever
Which do you use?

I love my Laptop. The kids have the big computer downstairs. I have Hi speed internet, wi-fi and I can go up to about a 100 feet from the house and have no problem with the connection. I would look for speed, included features like video, photo processing, internal/external speakers and software to personalize it. Memory should be basic and then use USB and externals for back-up and recovery. These days a good laptop can go for $500-$1000 But, you will be surprised by the great offers from lil computer shops and Used (including Goodwill) I got mine at Goodwill. If I bought it new ($1200-$1400) I paid $379 used. I ca do anything with it and I will have this for at least 3/4 more years before I need a new one. Keep asking and keep a list of the things you want. This will lessen your dissatisfaction later when you system does not have what you want. Look at web-sights for MAC, HP, Toshiba ...ect and see what features that catch your eye. It won't make you a geek. You will be an educated consumer.

If you get a laptop, seriously consider a stand or fan that allows air to circulate underneath. And don't get a super cheap plastic one from Walmart either (broke in 2 weeks!). I just bought a $60 ultra quiet one from Zalman. It's great!
My husband has a MAC desktop and the mouse is weird. It drags and doesn't roll around smoothly. I'd rather get a MAC laptop. That's going to be my next one once this one dies.

JR, we have two desk tops and our older kids have laptops, they get them when they start college. I would really like the portability of a laptop, but still like to be hooked up to a printer.
The Man and I want to add a laptop to our home, but we need a couch and a new recliner, and a new bed, and the bills and I have no idea when we'll be able to do it.
But, with the desk top you don't to worry about finding a hot spot, running out of power, you are connected to your printer, fax and scanner, and it's powerful.
I'd like both, actually.

We have 3 laptops between myself and Randy. He has his HP laptop, I have an HP laptop and now I have a new Apple MacBook Pro that I am learning to use. If I like the Mac, I may buy another one for the hubby to have.

I agree. My vision isn't the greatest, and I simply can't see the things on the screen on small computers. One of my kids has a small comp, (I'm not great with computers, I don't know if it's a netbook or what) and she always wants to share things with me (like the latest Equals 3 episode or something equally funny) and I can't SEE the things on the screen.

Otherwise, they'd be great!

So, I need a large screen, plus I enlarge the screen more when I go to a website.

Laptop and phone. I'm invincible!

Laptop! We don't own a desktop, and I can go anywhere with my laptop!

I have my good old Dell laptop! I prefer it to other computers because I have my shit arranged just how I like it and it's easier for me to get what i need/want. Using someone else's computer makes me feel like I'm invading someone else's space. I'm weird like that

Even though laptops are nice desktops are gettin smaller and smaller so you can save room but never worry about little things like your laptop gettin to hot or it dying from low battery

Me and laptops don't mix. I use desktops and I'm going to be building my next computer when it comes time.

I use a total of three computers (4 if I'm at my dad's house). Three desktops, and 1 laptop. At my mom's we have a computer in every bedroom, and 2 in the living room.

I think it's definitely worthwhile getting a laptop. It used to be that laptops were less robust than desktops, but that's no longer the case.

I have a laptop with 17" screen and near full-size keyboard - big enough for comfortable frequent use, since I don't travel with it that much, but that gives me the option of portability and moving around the house with wireless.

I ended up getting a cool Toshiba. I'm actually thinking about getting another laptop, but still up in the air.
I do love the portability of a laptop, but it also comes with the worry of breaking it!

They're surprisingly durable these days. I can't tell you how many times mine has fallen off the bed and I think the only real damage is that I've managed to unseat the disk drive. I just gotta take the time to figure out how to fix that and it should be golden again, lol

I got last year a 13 inch white mack not sure of its full name lol. It took me a while to get use to it, I was a PC person but I was told once you go Mac you never go Back. And so far I am not planning on going back.

I use a laptop

Mac laptops are good if your IQ is below room temperature, in college, or an art design major. Don't get me wrong, I love my Macbook, but I'm in college. ANY other laptop can pretty much guarantee you better equipment, better care, better memory, better efficiency, everything. I used to build computers as a kid, and I'm pretty well experienced in the Mac/Windows battle. If you can handle it --> Windows all the way, baby!

Windows OS on a laptop any day!

I hate mac and I hate laptops. I build my own desktops.

i voted both because i have both in the house but my laptop is absolutely my lifeline. i use it for work, school, and play.
i have an HPDV4T and i absolutely love it!

I have a desktop because they're easier to keep running even when they're old and decrepit. My friends with laptops seem to have to get new ones much more often.

Check it out!
BTW - Macs are nice machines, I just can't justify the cost being 3x higher than the alternatives. PCs have become toasters - just a necessary appliance that you needn't spend a fortune to acquire or use. less

I refuse to buy another crappy Windows PC without seriously considering a Mac.

For our next computer we are getting a laptop. I don't like the desktop computer taking up space in the house. I see the computer desk as a junk collector, and more room that the kids could be playing in, so I want it gone.

I come from a mac family, but I'm the PC black sheep...
