On saturday my aunt just told my mom she found a lump while doing a self exam, I'm going with her Friday to the doctors and I'm also getting my 1st mammogram (I'm 38 so it's about right for timing). Please wish us luck, and this is proof of how important self exams are-eary detection (if it's malignant) could save her life! Thank you to Eden for the amazing attention you are giving to Breast Cancer Month, and also for mentioning that men can get it too!

Changes in color, shape, and size of the areola are some of the symptoms. Others are fluid from the nipple or lumps in the tissue.

Did you know...? Men are susceptible to breast cancer, too. The signs and symptoms are somewhat similar and yet somewhat different. A man may experience growth in tissue and feel a lump, this is usually attributed to a change in hormones.
The best way to fight breast cancer is to give yourself monthly exams, but we all know that couples who play together stay together. Once a month, jump in the shower together, soap up and let your hands do some roaming. Check for any visual changes in the breast on both yourself and your partner.
Any lumps or suspicious changes in appearance should be noted and an appointment made to see a physician. Every day through the help of organizations like the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, strides are being made in treatments available to men and women.
Though the chance of men developing breast cancer are 1 in 1,000 and far less likely than a woman's, it is still a very real possibility and early detection can save your life or the life of a loved one. Go on, it's okay! We give you permission to feel each other up! Suddenly those Boob Inspector t-shirts are a little more appropriate, no?
Some research has shown that estrogen is a promoter of breast cancer in women; females who are on the pill containing estrogen for birth control for longer than five years show a marked increase in their risk of developing the disease.
Soy products contain levels of estrogen and have thought to be a factor for both men and women. Hormone replacement therapy for women has also been indicated as a risk factor.
For those who consume a large amount of soy products, would you stop eating them if it was proven that soy intake and breast cancer were directly linked?
P.S.

I don't change my life due to what may or may not cause cancer. They say you can get cancer from EVERYTHING and I just don't think I can drastically change my habits for a risk that will still be there no matter what I do.

Breast cancer runs in my family though more distantly (a great grandmother had a mastectomy way before reconstructive surgery and all was the norm. Obviously never knew her but she was clearly strong woman!) and being an Ashkenazi Jew, as I am, ups my risk and that of my family.

There's amazing technology out there these days too that can catch things super early. A former (female) lover of mine had a biopsy on a suspicious tissue found by mammogram (something she never could have felt or even seen, the earliest and smallest little thing) and the biopsy removed the entire thing and she was in the clear.
And as for soy... I actually had to give it up do to intolerance. Those, like me, who grow up lactose intolerance and are given soy formula as a baby and eat a lot of soy (I have also been vegan for most of my life) are at increased risk of developing intolerance at some point in their life. In fact the symptoms are very similar to lactose intolerance or at least they were for me. It can be hard to go soy free particularly if you're a non-meat eater or lactose intolerant and soy is in all kinds of food these days even candy and chips and all sorts of things you'd never expect it to be in. But with that said, I'd doubt soy alone really is that much of a risk. Most cancers are probably a combination of so, so many things- genetics, environment, food, lifestyle, etc, etc. There is no one thing or food you you can do or not do or eat or not eat that will ever guarantee you will not get cancer. Which of course is why in the end we're all (healthy or not) in this together.

I feel the same way as SubmissiveFeminist. Everything can give you cancer!
we are loaded with radiation all day every day, cell phones, airport checks, chemicals in our food, air and water, genetics stirring around crummy things in our bodies.
I have had 5 people in my family die from different kinds of cancer (plus one survivor) and they were all pretty healthy people. (except the oldest (78) that cooked everything in lard)
So i know i have to keep an eye on things but i wont go to the extremes to try and prevent something that could happen anyway.
I check for lumps once in a while, check for HPV when i go to the gyno (they are in there anyway) and i eat fruits, vegetables and mineral supplements..
Breast cancer awarness month is such a great teacher but it needs to be paired up with the lower half of the body (HPV and cervical cancer)

I don't eat a lot of soy, but I do eat it sometimes. I would give it up if it was a direct link. However, I believe in everything in moderation.
10/12/2012
I tend to forget to do my monthly self-exam I will make a concerted effort to improve, since there is a history of breast cancer in my family. I do, however, get my yearly exam when I go to the OBGYN.

Thanks for this chance. I really should write a little note to remind myself to check myself!

Breast cancer awareness is great and all (and yes, I realize its breast cancer awareness month), but there are so many other important, serious and deadly health issues that get pushed to the side because they aren't all about boobs and pink.
For instance, DVT (blood clots) and Pulmonary Embolism (when a clot goes to the lungs), kill more people each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined. Yet, there are many who don't know their risk or even the symptoms to watch for. And its not just older people at risk. I had my first DVT at age 20 and a pulmonary embolism at 25.
I'm pretty sure we're all aware of breast cancer - now can we all focus our energy on some other issues?
(and if anybody is going to read into this that I don't care about breast cancer - I do, I perform my self checks and my doctor does annually. I just think its time to raise awareness about other issues, too)

The piece about soy is interesting because it's a huge part of my diet and knowing that they may be correlated is scary.
10/13/2012
I don't eat very much soy, but that's pretty interesting. I never knew about that. But yeah, it seems like everything causes cancer these days. It can be hard to keep track of so I probably wouldn't.
