I do have friends that have breast cancer, it's so terrible of what one has to endure, I pray for all those who have to go through all that's involved.

I liked last year when we made the videos for breast cancer awareness. I have been saving yogart tops and sending them in for breast cancer funds.

First off, I would like to reiterate the "men can have breast cancer, too" point. Archer, a comedy spy cartoon (raunchy and silly) actually has an entire story arch where Archer, the main character finds out that HE has breast cancer after going to the clinic to support his mother on her screening (she didn't have breast cancer).

My mom found a lump that was missed by the doctor and the technician. She returned within a week of finding it herself and requested an ultrasound. It turned out to be cancer. She's fine now after a partial mastectomy, lymphectomy, and radiation. She's been cancer-free for 3 years now! And my mom and three sisters have stopped eating soy products at the recommendation of my mom's cancer doc.

There is such a high risk of breast cancer with my family history that my doctor would be very reluctant to put me on any form of the pill, its worrying that you need to have such a high risk factor already for doctors to really start pointing this out though.

I do consume a large amount of soy products, but I would definitely stop eating as much if soy intake was positively correlated with breast cancer!

Did you know...? Men are susceptible to breast cancer, too. The signs and symptoms are somewhat similar and yet somewhat different. A man may experience growth in tissue and feel a lump, this is usually attributed to a change in hormones.
The best way to fight breast cancer is to give yourself monthly exams, but we all know that couples who play together stay together. Once a month, jump in the shower together, soap up and let your hands do some roaming. Check for any visual changes in the breast on both yourself and your partner.
Any lumps or suspicious changes in appearance should be noted and an appointment made to see a physician. Every day through the help of organizations like the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, strides are being made in treatments available to men and women.
Though the chance of men developing breast cancer are 1 in 1,000 and far less likely than a woman's, it is still a very real possibility and early detection can save your life or the life of a loved one. Go on, it's okay! We give you permission to feel each other up! Suddenly those Boob Inspector t-shirts are a little more appropriate, no?
Some research has shown that estrogen is a promoter of breast cancer in women; females who are on the pill containing estrogen for birth control for longer than five years show a marked increase in their risk of developing the disease.
Soy products contain levels of estrogen and have thought to be a factor for both men and women. Hormone replacement therapy for women has also been indicated as a risk factor.
For those who consume a large amount of soy products, would you stop eating them if it was proven that soy intake and breast cancer were directly linked?
P.S.

I check mine pretty randomly. Not sure how hubby and I examining each other in the shower would go as he tends to stay under the warm water and I get mad/cold and get out.

I have my breast exam card in my bathroom. Check myself every month.

Soy is definitely bad news for many reasons, the estrogen/cancer risk being one of them. Fermented soy in moderation is OK (that is the type that Asians traditionally consume), but products such as tofu and soy milk are not food.
10/10/2012
I remember hearing a guy say that men couldn't get breast cancer. Ridiculous.
10/10/2012
I would limit how much soy I eat and drink. I love soymilk and tofu, but I would rather lower my risk. However, as someone else pointed out, countries that have historically eaten soy have LOWER levels of cancer than meat-heavy countries, so I doubt the risk is higher than from the chemicals we're getting from plastics and whatnot. Of course if tofu does turn out to be bad, I wouldn't mind eating steamed soybeans plain.

My wife does self exams each month, I however do not... until now! The shower exam sounds like a great idea and fun. We plan to take this idea and run with it, we will both be doing self exams each month from here on out.

I limit soy in my diet. Especially GMO soy. I've also eliminated parabens in my personal care products to reduce risk of possible cancer contributors.

Didn't know soy products could increase the risk of developing the disease.
I hardly eat any soy products, but if it was proven that soy intake and breast cancer were directly linked I would stop eating them completely.

I'm no scientist, but I'm pretty sure the estrogen levels are a result of the food itself and the less processed a soybean is, the higher the estrogen level.

I'm not sure how one can avoid eating soy products. My little brother is allergic to soy and it is EXTREMELY difficult to find foods without some kind of soy filler, at least in the US. Almost all bread products have soy in them. Margarine and mayonnaise both have soy in them, as do several dairy substitutes and vegetable oil blends. It's also used in a ton of non-food products such as soap, lotion, shampoo and some medications.
So anyway, soy may increase someone's risk of breast cancer but it is nearly impossible to avoid. I would not bother trying. If a strong connection were shown, I'd hope that food manufacturers would stop using soy.

What sort of changes in appearance should we be on the look out for? Colour change or something?

On saturday my aunt just told my mom she found a lump while doing a self exam, I'm going with her Friday to the doctors and I'm also getting my 1st mammogram (I'm 38 so it's about right for timing). Please wish us luck, and this is proof of how important self exams are-eary detection (if it's malignant) could save her life! Thank you to Eden for the amazing attention you are giving to Breast Cancer Month, and also for mentioning that men can get it too!
