Some people benefit from being with their peers in a writing group. If you find the right group with supportive people in it, it can help. But if there are agendas in the group, run.

Perhaps approach it from another direction. Don't write it in a linear way, but slot in bits and pieces of story and then try to fit it together. I've written stories in this manner. Whatever gets it written is fine. There is no right or wrong.
It usually comes to me when I'm trying to sleep, or I'm driving. I think it's because I'm not focusing on anything in particular and my brain is free to roam and use my imagination.

I have so many journals on my shelf with different ideas written in each one..my hubs wants to stop me buying more but I can't help it.

Yes, I think that's quite common for writers.

My last contribution from one of the authors, Ashley R. Lister, fits right in with our discussion of writing:

I had a lot of fun writing ‘Scratched.’

It’s set in one of my favourite parts of the world: the Yorkshire moors. It deals with one of my favourite aspects of the supernatural: werewolves. And it’s set firmly in one of my favourite genres: erotica.

I recently used the first two pages of ‘Scratched’ as an exercise in a creative writing class I teach. We’d been discussing horror stories, students were given the first two pages of ‘Scratched’, and they were told to continue the story in the direction they wanted.

It was fascinating to see how many different interpretations students came up with from the same beginning. No two stories were alike. Some of them were so radically different it was difficult to believe they’d started from the same place.

And I think that’s one of the things I love about this Red Velvet and Absinthe - no two stories are the same. Every writer has explored the blend of erotica and supernatural with their own unique style, which means it has a treasured place in my personal library.

That is so interesting! And what a great idea to take part of a story and then finish it. That would be a great exercise for anyone writing.

Oooh! I'd love to be a literature teacher for that reason alone! I'd love to read where her pupil's took it!

Sounds like a really cool exercise. It would be interesting to be able to read the stories that the students came up with.

Do any of you have some secret fantasy about a place, a setting, surroundings, that you'd love to enter through a story? Maybe that's a good prompt for writing one.

Ashley's a "he." At least he was the last time I saw him!

But yes, it's quite interesting teaching creative writing. I would assign a task to my university students - and you just can't believe the number of crazy directions they all go in. The same exercise - and no two results remotely resemble each other.

I've thought about writing stories about my own sexuality or fantasies, but it always ends up rather icking me out...maybe too personal?

"His" pupils, actually. I could be wrong, but I think Ash was the only male author in the book. I know him mostly through his reviews on Erotica Revealed and Erotica Readers and Writers, but he's a terrific writer himself.
