Haha I wish, but no. My husband has been sick for the last week and I thought I was in the clear since I hadn't gotten anything yet, but this morning it snuck up on me and I've been unhappy about it all day. I'm looking very forward to ... more
Glad to hear that. It WAS fun, eh?

Welcome to the second meeting of the Eden Photographers Club! I hope everyone had a good month of thinking about photography and looking at the world through a photographer’s eyes. I want to thank all of you who are here tonight, and especially those of you who submitted and critiqued photos on the Eden

Photographers tumblr site
. With the weather turning warmer, I expect all of us will have more photography opportunities and hopefully more people will be submitting and critiquing photos. Before we get started, is there anything anybody wanted to bring up about photography or the club?

Nothing off the top of my head, other than to say it was really great to see everybody's submissions. I know I sucked at getting over there to critique them, there just aren't enough hours in the day

I just happened to pop by because of my news feed. What's up?

Thanks again for the info on my camera, about the macro and the depth of field. Been playing around with both, good results from the macro (See 'Share your photos) The depth of field is a bit harder to do.

Well, I certainly enjoyed your photos. The one of your legs was especially good. Hopefully you'll be able to fire off some critiques in the coming months.

I'll be doing a tutorial on DOF next month. With your camera, though, it's definitely hard to control it.

OK so the stop sign one was amazing...truth as you drive down the street on a Monday!
I love the expression on the cats face, the image seems to breathe and the photo has life.

OK, then. During this meeting, I wanted to make sure everyone understands the Rule of Thirds. I hope everyone read the article I posted to the Eden Clubs and Events blog link, because although I’ll certainly be touching on the concepts outlined there, I want to go into greater detail here. Briefly, the Rule of Thirds is a very basic, but heavily utilized, photo composition technique that can immediately improve your photography once you understand it. The Rule of Thirds applies to all types of photography, and I’ll be pointing out three manners in which I use it most commonly: macrophotography, landscape photography, and portrait photography.

I like that technique. I was told bout that long ago. My camera has a X that can be put on the screen, it helps me to remember where to put the focus of my picture. Admittedly, I don't always use it though.

It's not always necessary, but for some reason the human brain seems to like the subject shifted towards the corners for many photographs.

Macrophotography is close-up photography. Most point-and-shoot cameras have a macro mode, and SLR cameras have special lenses (macro lenses) you can buy for the same purpose. The photo below is an example of macrophotography. In the image, you can see how I positioned the moth’s head near the intersection of the lines in the upper right quadrant on the image. Where exactly you place the focal point of your photograph is up to you. I personally like it better if it is not precisely at the intersection of the lines, but slightly towards the nearest corner. The exact placement is up to you, and it may likely differ from photograph to photograph. In general, when you are photographing an animal (including humans) it is the eyes that are the most important features, so lining them up according to the Rule of Thirds is usually preferred than any other body part. This is not, of course, always the case. For any other object, you’ll need to figure out what the most eye-catching feature of your subject is and feature it near the intersection of two lines.

Now I know...I do have a question though: I have a 12 year old that is really interested in photography and she is homeschooled. Would you mind if I show her the articles you've written? I really don't want her on the site, of course but your articles are well written and the photographic material is suitable for her.
