Have you seen Psychopathia Sexualis or read it? It's on Netflix but I haven't watched it yet and I don't know how well related the film is to the actual case work. I have the book and the case study book. It was written by a psychologist named Richard von Krafft-Ebbing in the 1800's and is a clinical perspective and over 200 case studies into sexuality and deviant sexuality. I haven't finished the book yet (it's in depth and long and I work 16 hours a day ) but from what I have read, it's very intersting - obviously some of the theories have changed or been proven otherwise since then but it's fascinating.

I'd love to discuss the movie some more, if anyone wants to.
And Tori, Krafft-Ebing is soooo interesting! But his stuff is kinda on par with Freud, for the psych people. He's credited with bringing a lot of detailed, recorded information about people's sexuality to the surface, but...The majority of it is really negative and demonizing. Sexologists tend to acknowledge its importance as helping to form a base for the field, but we're all about sex positivity these days! (Can you tell I'm a Human Sexuality student? LOL) In other news, I didn't know that was on Netflix! Definitely have to add it to my queue!

Oh it's far from sex-positive, I know that. I just think it's fascinating to see how sexuality was studied and to see the progression of the professional opinion over the years and even centuries. And while a lot of his clinical ideas are now considered passe or just flat out wrong, it's where a lot of research started and a lot of behaviors were first coined in his work. It's like the Beatles...while I don't like the music and music has gotten far better since then (IMHO), it had to start somewhere!

And I just double checked Netflix and it's still in my queue so it's still there but the ratings are bad. I'm guessing it minimized a lot of the work and probably dumbed it down quite a bit as well.

I just went back to county college here (luckily one of the best county colleges in the country is in my county) and am in the human services department so I'll end up with 2 years of psychology or social work, which I'm hoping to move into human sexuality if I can find a way to.

Dude, I go to Widener, which is in Eastern PA, just Southwest of Philly. We have the only accredited graduate program in human sexuality in the country. It's probably not TOO far from you, right? I mean, Jersey's just a drive over the bridge from me here in Philadelphia. But I guess it depends on which part you live in.

Philly is 2 hours from me. I'm waaay north It would be tricky but possibly doable, especially if they have online courses in some things to cut down on the time I'd actually have to be on campus.
