We don't have a real sex shop anywhere close. My friend and I drove 45-50 miles to Cupids several months ago to check out their selection, but the particular one we went to had crappy materials. I would like to go to a store that had some higher quality vibes so I could see them in person because sometimes I'm a bad judge on size.

It would just depend. In some places the adult store might be in in the part of town I call the rapey muggy part of town, so if i didnt feel safe I wouldn't go in. Then it would depend on the atmosphere of the store. If it felt creepy in any way I wouldn't buy anything. EF never feels creepy!!!

I found out that the quality toys I am really interested here are simply not available in stores around my city. I also usually know so much more than the sales person that I end up walking out in chock most of the times (like when I was said that this or that toy is in silicone when in fact it is not or when I saw the horror face the sales women made when I said that I was boiling my silicone dildo to sanitize it..."I would never do that! I don't think that you can!"... OMG!)

There is a local woman-owned sex shop where the employees are really, really nice and professional. I've bought stuff there. I had a friend with me but she was non-judgy, and we were on our way to a kink event besides.
I remember as a teen being made to feel really uncomfortable in, like, a spencer's gifts. Some novelty shops are crap. It depends on the place. I get nervous sometimes but I think that locally, where I am, a lot of people are accepting.

I have bought in person, and have no problem doing so. People are so funny about sex shops. They're worried that they'll see someone they know.
I guess if I ran into my parents, that'd be kinda gross. but also, who cares if anyone sees what I'm buying? people need to not be so uptight about sex. Thankfully, sites like this help.

Sure, I've done it before, no problem. Though the closest one is a several hour drive from here, so internet shopping is easier (and cheaper).

It's a lot cheaper and more efficient to buy online, but it's fun to go into stores now and then! If you have a good shop near you, it's also a great opportunity to try out some toys in person (not literally, but there is usually a demo you can check out just to feel strength, loudness, patterns, etc). Everyone is different, I'm sure, but I think your experience might have been a little better had you been with some different friends.
I've found that if you go with friends, they should either be serious or be willing to give you your space--otherwise it can be really uncomfortable. If you're going with an open-minded boyfriend or by yourself it can be really fun though! It's especially awesome when the salesperson is knowledgeable and social. Sometimes they're not and that can make it awkward, too.
