What kind of toy for my unexperienced friend?

I started out with a realistic one and am very happy I did, now I am looking to expand to other types.

A simple, preferably adjustable speed vibrator!

I would get the Evolved seduction, it's an amazing beginner toy. And I've had it for a year and half and I still love it!!

A simple one-speed vibe may not work for your friend. A multi-function rabbit may seem a little too daunting. A nice textured glass toy is easy to use and doesn't look intimidating (except maybe Icicles No. 24).

Even if money isn't a problem, I still wouldn't jump into the $100 + range until she's a bit more sure of what she likes. That said, I'd get a fairly strong toy - some kind of massager probably. When I first started using toys, I didn't know what vibration strength I needed, and I started out with the weaker vibes. I ended up wasting a lot of money that way. If, on the other hand, you get a vibrator that's a bit too strong for her taste, there's ways to tone down the intensity so that she can still enjoy it (use it on low if that's an option, put a towel between her and the toy, etc).
