Being an editor is a bit like being a conductor, isn't it? The notes are all there and they are all beautiful, it's just a matter of arranging them for maximum effect.

Could you tell us a bit about what you teach? And which of your students are included in this collection?

Lori, you are brave. I salute you. I called on some of my pals but most of them I had never seen their work.

My Masters is in Humanities, which boils down to the study of the interconnectedness of all things. I love finding-- or making-- those connections.

I'd love to more know about the general experience of being an editor. I'd imagine it must be a bless and a curse to have to read erotica for a job.

I am getting intriged to write I have heard I'm not bad at it. I think I need to read some erotica to get my mind set in order. Do you teach student online?

That's a great idea - I've not thought about erotic writing from this perspective. I have about a dozen stories I am now going to go back look at from this angle...and probably do extensive rewriting!

I'm just now reading submission for my second anthology, Dream Lover, and so far it's just pure pleasure. I imagine after another dozen or so anthologies (should I be so lucky to continue editing!), I might feel differently, but I find that I enjoy the process of reading and selecting stories. Being an editor is completely different than being a writer, and i think the two provide a nice creative balance for me.

Lori and Cole, do you feel the same?

That's awesome. And I'm sure you're going to do plenty of new anthologies. Which I look forward to reading, of course.

Oh Laurel, I hope not "extensive" rewriting! You'll hate me. ;-)

In addition to my Stiletto U teachings, I teach two writing classes at the adult school in my area. I love teaching adults because they are generally writers that can't seem to give up on their dreams and I love that energy.

I teach A Novel Start, which is really about how to structure a novel. I obviously cover the basics like character and dialogue, etc. but I really concentrate on plot the most because that's where most aspiring writers fall down. So basically, it's a class that teaches all the prewriting involved in writing a novel. When they leave, they leave with a treatment and a chapter outline.

I also teach, Write Away, which is a short story writing class. We dont study them, we write them, again concetrating on plot and character development.

Toi James wrote Bubble Music. She's fantastic. Remember her name.
Elise Gower wrote Wet, and Teddy, who I didn't teach in class but have used his poetry in my novels and have been his prose mentor.

Yes, in two weeks. I don't have a calendar in front of me, but I believe Laurel posted the dates and books in the discussion forum.

It is exactly that, a blessing and a curse because you're reading for so many different things--story, character, tittilation factor and also different sex from the last story you read. And there comes a point where the sex doesn't move you the same anymore because you're working on it in such a technical manner. And I'm sure Cole will agree, you really want to showcase your writers at their very best because they are working hard for very little money in most cases. That's one reason why I have fewer stories in Can't Help because I wanted to be able to pay the writers more. I also try to meet up on the road with them when I can because really, this is their book not mine, and they deserve the praise and kudos.
