Abstinence is a legitimate option but not what I had in mind. I'm referring to those who don't use any birth control at all like my husband and I. Your list presumes everyone uses birth control which is plainly false.

Pulling out even with a condom is even more safe, if you're going to have sex. But, others, please don't be fooled. Even having sex in the butt, though rare, can cause pregnancy, due to dripping. Semen can live a few minutes outside the body, and if some semen gets down to the labia, it can still swim. Just be very careful!

I also used spermicidal foam with my last husband. He really wanted more kids, and he knew I didn't (and knew that I'd only wanted one when we decided to have any kids), so I wanted to be sure NOT to get pregnant. It's not as spontanious, but I did use it, with condoms, and never had any issues or reactions.

For years I used the patch. It was actually my first non-condom method. I chose it because I can be forgetful, especially when I'm stressed. It also finally regulated my cycle. I liked it, had no real problems with it. After about 10 years I started to have breakthrough bleeding a week or so before my period, so it was almost like having it for 2 weeks. My doctor couldn't figure out why, so we opted for a change. I'm now on the pill (Kariva). I'm not comfortable with the possibility of me forgetting to take it, but I've made it a part of my morning routine & keep it on the table next to my purse where I eat breakfast. I've been on it for a year & the breakthrough bleeding has substantially decreased, and only seems to occur when I have a palpable ovarian cyst (which have also decreased). I haven't experienced any weight gain. My only complaint is the side effect on my cholesterol. I'm not sure if this is common to all hormonal birth control, but this one can increase your bad cholesterol (it states this in the prescribing info included with the pills). In the past year I've lost 30 pounds, no longer over weight, walk up to 7 miles a day, and eat much healthier, and make a point to avoid foods containing bad cholesterol. At my recent physical it was found that my cholesterol had actually gone up, so I'll be making a trip to the the doctor to try something else.

I currently have the arm implant and I would not recommend it to anyone. I've had it close to two years and the side effects are still there, the mood swings, oh, and it move deeper into my arm. I'm getting it removed in a couple weeks.

Although I'm not on it for the contraception, I take the pill. Don't really have to worry about baby making when we can't make them ourselves.

Does it really help? Does it relieve the pain? Because my periods are so painful I can hardly stand straight for the first two days. I can barf or lose conscience because of the pain. I was told the pill could help. But, on the other hand, we will be trying to have a baby soon.
