=) My cousin had her baby boy yesterday (our 1st 9/11 baby.YAY!) && it was my first time experiencing this situation. I helped and i watched and nothing was wrong with me UNTIL it was time for her epiduralMG , my fear of needles sky rocketed. lol BUT, i was fine after. She ended up having a C-Section after hrs of pushing (makes me feel like i don't wanna have kids).
Have you ever watched/helped someone give birth?

I've worked in many areas of Maternal Infant nursing. I prefer post partum work to L&D and really don't care for the way many hospitals treat laboring women. Many are drugged out of their minds before they have the chance to ever actually give birth to the baby. I've seen some home births and most went very well, much less scary than hospital births, from my POV. I had my kids in hospitals only because I have high risk pregnancies and deliveries. If I had regular pregnancies and didn't have a constricted pelvis, I would have had my kids at home and kept the drugs away!
I have also worked as a post partum doula and loved it. I may go back to it, if I get the chance.

I helped deliver my own two children. I've also delivered puppies, kittens, cows, and lambs. Do those count too?

That is so cool that you caught your own babies! My Man stayed with me during my first 57 hour labor, but was so scared he couldn't go into the OR (sadly, after 57 hours of labor and 3 hours of pushing my android pelvis wouldn't let the babies through) But, with the next one, I had a similar labor, and he knew what to expect, so he not only was with me, but came into the OR when it was determined that this baby wasn't going to come out either.

With our third one, I had to schedule a section, but I went into labor a month early so he was, of course there, and this one he got to cut the cord. What I liked was that as soon as they assessed and wrapped the babies they gave them right to my husband, so they would be held by someone who loved them as soon as they were born.
I would have given anything to have had vaginal births.
It must have been so cool to help guide your babies out, Kindred. What an amazing experience. I feel close to babies I've just watched being born, helping your own child be born must be the most wonderful experience.

I totally agree. Hospitals are so damn scary! All those drugs shouldn't even be necessary. (I might just have a home-birth).

Having delivered many animals and having seen much worse, it was easy for me and yet still amazing to watch and participate in. (Besides, my wife had a death grip on my wrist and was not letting go! )

I've watched but haven't actually helped in the process.

Have twice during nursing school, would love to go further in nursing and be a nurse midwife actually. Just not there yet.

i have no interest in watching the miracle of birth, but i really appreciate those that do

My mother had my sister at home. I was 8 and was there when she was born. I don't remember helping that much, but I did watch as my mother felt it was important that I really know where babies came from. I mainly remember getting to hold her shortly after she was born. It was probably the only time she and I have gotten along for longer then 5 minutes

I work as an interpreter, and actually do the majority of my work in OB/GYN and pediatrics, and have witnessed births while working as an interpreter. I agree that hospitals and staff often make it far too clinical. It's still a wonderful experience, and a privilege to be a witness to.

Long story short, woman at work went into labor. I've been scared to have kids ever since, but I want them!

Just with my cat. She did all the work. I gave her moral support and comfort.

I've watched my sister's give birth.
09/12/2011
I've never watch someone else giving birth. My husband on the other hand, was with me while I went through c-section, giving birth to our son.
09/12/2011
Watched/helped with both my kids, would not trade that experience for nothing.
09/12/2011
I've never been in a position to aid in the birth of a human being and I can't imagine myself ever being in said position. There are far more important people than I to invite into a delivery room. That being said, I always thought it would be kind of neat to experience. Providing it was someone else's body the kidlet was destroying.

My best friend and I filmed each others births. It was an amazing experience to watch. My husband was with me the entire time through both births.

Been through both of my wife's deliveries. That stuff doesn't really make me squeamish. The next birth will be our first c section delivery so that will be different! Kinda looking forward to it as weird as that sounds.

Pretty sure I don't want to.

More than once. I don't mind it, but then again it was only my sisters so of course it wasn't disturbing. The only thing that bothered me was my twin's pain was so extreme and during both mine and her pregnancies, we HAVE "felt each other's pain" We call it our "twincidents" It was horrible because I've had endometriosis since I was a teen and just had surgery last year and last year she was pregnant and the year before that I was pregnant twice! So we went through a lot of pain in these past few years. Very extreme and debilitating. I'm glad it's all over with.
I don't want to see people give birth on TV and think it's pretty distasteful at times, but when it's your own sisters, nothing is disgusting, not for us at least. It isn't scary or anything, but everyone gets nervous when it's time. I thought it was absolutely wonderful when they gave birth and it was a precious thing to me. Maybe I'd feel different if we weren't so close, but it wasn't all that bad and I never felt like I'd faint except when my twin's baby's heart rate dropped. Other than that, it's a really amazing thing and words just can't describe that. A miracle like thing. Lol.

I am absolutely enthralled by childbirth and have seriously considered becoming a doula and helping women and their babies during home births. Hospital births freak me out. There haven't been many births among my family and friends, so I haven't had a chance to witness a live one yet, but I'd love to.
I have a friend who's a doula, and we watched a ton of recorded births as she trained. It's such a bloody, painful, gross-out experience, and it's so beautiful through and through. I don't know if I'll have my own kids, but I'd certainly love to help women bring theirs into the world without the evil of hospitals.

I was fortunate at 17 to be asked by a friend of the family if I'd like to sit in on her 2nd home birth.
It was the most amazing experience I have ever had!
