never heard about it before this post but I think that I will look into it now.
Mooncup/Divacup/The Keeper: Have you used it, do you love it, would you try it?
06/21/2011
I use a diva cup and I LOVE IT!!! It has made my period soooo much easier, plus the no environmental impact thing is super awesome. Tampons or pads always just feel really gross, sooo glad I don't have to deal with them anymore. Plus, it saves me money! Woo!
06/21/2011
My fiancee and I have talked about this before; we both think it's interesting.
06/21/2011
I had a latex Keeper til it got lost in a move, and now I've got the silicone one by the same company in Ohio. I will never, never switch back to pads.
06/22/2011
I have a Diva Cup and have used it for 6 years now in conjunction with cloth pads. I freaking adore it, and it has made my life so much simpler. (no having to run to find a bathroom to switch out pads/tampons in between calls on the ambulance=epicness)
06/22/2011
Wow never knew they were so popular. I might try this out. I am allergic to most pads so it is really hard for me because I have about two types to use and sometimes they are not so easy to find. Thank you guys for all the info. After this baby I think I have a new thing to look into.

I don't find it bloody or gross, but I will say that you do have to be comfortable with your body to use one. But even before, when I still used tampons, I always used the OB tampons with no applicator. So I was used to getting my hands in there, and it just never bothered me. Now, it's not like you use the cup and the bathroom looks like a scene out of the movie Pscyho or anything. LOL But you may (quite likely) get a little blood on your hand and/or fingers. It rinses right off though, no problem.
I would also recommend (and I think the DivaCup site also recommends this) doing a trial run for a few days before your period starts, just so you can kind of get the hang of inserting and removing it. I did a trial run of about a week, and then still wore a panty-liner during my first actual week of using it during my period.

I had a Diva Cup and I didn't like it. I started to get horrible cramps towards the end of each period when I normally didn't have them.
06/22/2011
I have a Lunette Cup and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I have VERY heavy cycles (esp the first 2 days) and never have leaks. I feel that my cramping has been less since I started using it too - for me a nice bonus.

I've heard of them, but I'm still on the fence about getting one. I'm taking baby steps in terms of moving away from period products that clutter landfills-right now I have washable pads and they work just fine for me.
06/22/2011
I would've tried it back in the day if they had it then, but I don't have a period and haven't (THANK YOU JESUS!) IN 7 years due to meds I take for endometriosis. Anyways, my sister did try them multiple times and she had horrible luck. Her and I are twins and both have always had serious problems with menstrual cycles and female parts. I have had endo since my early teen years and she's always had an abnormally heavy and LONG period which is a nuisance in her life big time! She used the cups and I don't remember a single time where she didn't end up with bad leaks. No matter how hard she tried or how often she checked, she leaked! I think they aren't the best option for heavy periods. Hers would spill if she moved a lot and I guess it would tilt or squeeze inside her and spill. She also had a lot of discomfort with it.

I've been planning for a long time to try one, but I'm still getting there

wow thanks everyone for posting, so glad to get the talk going on this awesome little-known subject!
my mooncup has made me literally look forward to my period, and for more than the simple fact that it means i'm not pregnant! for me, seeing all that blood in its natural form, not absorbed in a reeking shriveled tampon, is jarring, humbling. it reminds me of my mortality and of all the really cool things my body does. and my favorite color is red.
note that while travelling europe for a year i spent a lot of time in the woods, camping, and just hanging out in places where the nearest shop with pads was A) far away and B) charging a SERIOUS arm and leg for the damn things and C) didnt have tampons, which i used before the mooncup. having this onhand at all times allowed me some serious freedom i would never have had before. i could empty it in a stream while walking along the trail of the gods from bologna to florence in italy, or rinse it in the mediterranean sea in the fairy hole in pisa.
it does take a little practice, but by reading up on it one can get used to it and learn to love it.
i find my cramps are less than they ever were.
and i've started a whole new art series, painting with all that precious blood. (yeah you probably think i'm nuts but thats okay...) it just seemed sad as an artist to throw all that natural 'paint' into the toity.
you can read about it on my blog.

Wow, you are really creative! That's a lovely painting. I'll have to check out your blog.
I kinda look forward to my period now too, because of my DivaCup. It seems so wrong to say that and feel that way, but I feel so much more in tune with my body and my period using my Cup! I like seeing the chunks and clots in my cup. That's kind of gross, but I always just think - there is no way a tampon can absorb that, it can't be good for that stuff to get stuck in me. To me the Cup is like the best of both worlds - the safety of a pad, with the cleanliness/convenienc e of a super tampon!

I had never heard of them till a different discussion about what girls use on their periods not too long ago. Now I am interested and might try one out someday

for those who don't know, the mooncup is a silicone bell-shaped 'cup' folded and inserted vaginally that needs emptying from 0 -4 times a day during your period depending on your flow. it gets rinsed out with hot water and reinserted. it is AMAZING.
next to NO environmental impact (except what it took to create it) and you can reuse it for up to ten years. mine has revolutionized periods for me, as my periods are on the lighter side, and i only have to deal with it (empty it) about 4 times during my cycle.
no dryness due to tampons, sitting in bacteria as with pads, or inserting chemicals into your body (cotton is THE most pesticide-ridden crop and you wear it in your most absorbant orifice).
i absolutely love mine. wanted to spread the word about it (since it is still widely unknown) and get feedback from real users.

Man, I've known about them for years, but I've never gotten around to trying one. For various reasons, I'm not sure that they'd work for me, but I have always been curious.

Observation:
While waiting for a script to be filled today, I looked at the fem hygiene aisle and discovered they carried softcups (the disposable version of Diva/Moon/etc.). I read the outside packaging and found out that theirs is practically the same thing as a diaphragm - it hangs out right under the cervix and you have to dig around inside yourself to get it out again.
The silicone reusable cup is looking better to me all the time.

this is great to hear! as these things gain popularity, i hope we'll see more women getting more comfortable with their periods. quite a bit less hassle and less environmental guilt, as well as cheaper... like i said, my mooncup has completely changed my outlook on my period.

My cramps also got worse when I was wearing the Lady Cup. I think it was because the cups were a bit too large for me, I did follow the ordering guidelines to get the larger size since I've had a vaginal birth.

I certainly don't want to discourage anyone, because it IS a great concept and very environmentally friendly. The problem for me was, it started leaking. I'm not sure if my anatomy is weird or what because I didn't read about this problem in any of the reviews. Yeah, it was a bummer. I currently use disposable pads and am thinking about getting some cloth ones.

I've only used my DivaCup for one cycle. I'm not totally in love with it yet quite simply because I haven't quite got the knack for inserting and getting it in the perfect position. But I'm sure that in a cycle or two, I'll love it!
To anyone who is the slightest bit curious about menstrual cups, you need to check out the Menstrual Cup Community on Live Journal. It is, hands down, THE most informative place online for menstrual cup users. There are a ton of posts covering every possible question you could have, and extremely detailed FAQs on the right. I couldn't decide which cup to get until I went through their FAQs, which helped me narrow down the options in no time.
