There are numerous ways to get them (anal, oral, after a period, etc..). Essentially whenever a bacteria gets in the urinary tract, which can be often! Women are very susceptible to this and often when people have sex, they really aren't paying much attention to what is going where.

I drink lots of water, pee before and after sex, wash up, take cranberry tablets daily with a glass of cranberry juice, and when I sense a UTI, I take Cystex (available without Rx) but I also have a standing Rx for Pyridium (the stuff that turns your pee orange)...sometimes that will clear it up without me needing anti-biotics because it has antibacterial/analgesi c properties to it.

I have them ALL the time. My doc is not sure why I clean toys before and after, clean well down there and do all the stuff but they always come back, least one about every 2-3 months can be more. Only other thing I would say that I have not tried is changing what you eat and drink.

Some people don't notice that they have a UTI until its painful - or it goes away on its own.

I have had a few before -- but its been a long while since my last one. Pee before, and after sex. And if you feel you may be getting one, drink some cranberry juice.

Now that I know how to take care of myself better I haven't had any problems. It used to be quite frequently.

I've always gotten bladder infections a lot since I was little so I think it's common for me.

I used to get them all the time, but only from one particular boyfriend. For a while, it seemed like every other time we had sex I'd be getting another UTI. I had about eight or ten altogether. It was hugely painful (and embarrassing) and I actually ended up in hospital with a kidney infection at one point!

Funny thing is: I'd never had them before and I haven't had them since. He wouldn't believe me when I insisted that I only seemed to get them from him. It wasn't like he didn't shower every day, and it's not like we didn't use condoms. I'm convinced that there was just something on his skin that kept giving me infections.

I tried all the tricks that the doctors suggested: cranberry, peeing after sex, lots of water... the only thing that seemed to help was breaking up with him!

I used to get them pretty regularly since I have a kidney disease. But I have increased my intake of water, pee after sex, and drink lots of unsweetened cranberry juice. I also take some cranberry softgels- these are better than drinking tons of juice because the juice itself doesn't work very well if it has sugar in it.

I've only had one ever but it was absolutely hellish. I pee after sex religiously now, I'm terrified of getting another one. So far so good!

She should pee before sex and immediately (1-3 minutes) after as well. Avoid cranberry juices, as they're usually cocktails that aren't 100% cranberry and they're FULL of sugar, which the UTI causing bacteria LOVE. Instead, look for gel caps or chews that are made of or contain concentrated cranberry. I'd advise drinking plenty of fluids and not holding your bladder too long.

If she's really, terribly sensitive, be careful what kinds of lubes and toys you use. If they can't be 100% sterilized, put condoms on them. As most women know, after using the bathroom, wipe front to back ONLY, and before you touch the vulva, wash your hands with anti-bacterial hand soap. It also helps to use gloves when you finger a woman. Avoid sex or toy play in hot tubs, baths, showers, or anywhere with water because that water is a cesspool for bacteria to grow in.

Thongs and G-strings have been linked to increased UTIs, but I have't had any problems. Just make sure they're clean, lol. Common sense, right?

Hope this helps. I know it's a TON of info, but this is what each and every doctor tells me when I go in for these darn things. I'm prone to them, and have almost been hospitalized because of one really bad one, which I hope your wife never has to experience.
