ew... skewered! i'm so sorry!

you got no cycles? ooh you must've had the mirena. i've got the one without hormones. i cherish my cycle and its significance of 'hey, you're healthy! hey, you're not prego! hey, you're a woman and your body does strange, cool things!' too much to not have a period.

so glad you love it!! it does feel pretty awesome to not have to worry about babies, pills, or monthly costs for sure!

ah, that woulda been nice of them to give me! guess i just seemed so fine at the clinic... it didnt start till about 20 mins after.

i hope it goes well too! thank you so much for your positive encouragement, as always, p'gell.

totally worth it! take your cytotec, unlike me, and be prepared with a pain pill for after. be prepared to wear pantiliners for a little while at least as well.

also of note, eat something before you go in so you're not so nauseous.

good luck to you!

This was the same experience a good friend of mine had - she had an almost constant low-flow period. She also felt really depressed with no libido (which SUCKS and defeats the purpose!) while she had the IUD, enough so that she was prescribed anti-depressants. After about 6-8 months she got sick of bleeding fairly constantly, got it removed and not only did the bleeding stop, she felt 1,000 times better. Something with the IUD was messing with her hormones and causing the depression. I know this isn't everyone's experience, but it's enough to scare me off of it in the future.

I'd love to someday get an IUD! Very inspiring story. You go for taking the pain like a champ!

sounds like she may've been using the mirena, which does have hormones. paragard, the copper one, has no hormones, and shouldn't mess with anyone's period or mood at all.

When I got my mirena, it didn't hurt much. I didn't bleed. I didn't cramp. I had sex 3 days later. There was no prescription for any meds. I believe I was just told to pop some ibuprofen an hour before. I think I forgot. Doctor said I'd be a natural at childbirth. No lie.

wow! i did hear from some women that it didn't hurt at all, and other said it was worse than their 6 (!) natural childbirths. it depends on the cervix, the doctor, whether you've had kids before... and some luck, i'm sure!

so glad you had a good experience, thank you so much for sharing.

I've had my mirena for a little more than 2 months now, and it's great! I'm nearly 30 and have never had kids. When I got it inserted I think I did well, I hear of women passing out or screaming, I just had to remember to relax and breathe.
After I was a little crampy for about 3 days and had some mud like discharge (tmi) I didn't take any cervix softening meds and I had drank 3 coffees beforehand
I've had 1 period(it wasn't a normal period and didn't last very long) since and no cramps or moodiness like I had when I was just using condoms, before that I was on Depo for 5+ years, we waited until after my checkup to go condomless.
I hope that it continues to work well and when the time comes I can get another one

Im happy for you that you are so empowered by this, but I'm also kind of saddened it was to terrible for you.

Did you happen to research at all what happened to the women in the 60's and 70's from their IUD's? Their horror stories are why I could never consider one, especially with all the craziness my cunt has going on already.

But I'm super glad you feel liberated, and I wish you the best.

I have an IUD for about two years. I had to just about beg my MD for it as she was opposed to inserting an IUD in women who have never been pregnant before. I wasn't and the various hormonal methods reacted very negative with me so it was totally condoms prior to my IUD. In brief, I totally love it and haven't regretted it!
Yea, it hurt going in and I wasn't offered anything prior to dilate me. The only attention I give it is a check of the strings when I shower.
Good luck....I hope it works out for you.

I've considered an IUD, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I've never been on any kind of birth control and both of my children were planned.

That was the Dalkon Shield, a crab shaped IUD used in the 60s and 70s, that caused perforation, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease and infertility. This IUD (which is now banned) was not thoroughly tested, and cause a lot of problems. Of course, in those days most drugs and devices purely used by women were poorly tested. This IUD is no longer available, and the ones on the market are much much safer, have been properly tested and have less side effects.

All forms of Birth Control have side effects. Pregnancy causes more deaths than all forms of birth control ever used in history! Nothing is "100% safe" but the newer IUDs are a different breed than the ones made years ago.

Sadly, too many people remember the stories about the Dalkon Shield and don't remember it was a "new improved" IUD, and that it was different than other IUDs and was eventually taken off the market.

Here are some pictures of IUDs through the ages.

Ancient Egyptian women, more than 3,0000 years ago used to use small smooth pebbles as birth control, by having their midwives boil them, cool them and then insert them into the uterus. Intrauterine devices have been with us longer than almost any form of birth control, other than "pulling out."

I remember reading that there are like 12 on the market in the UK. Crazy compared to our 2

This is about Mirena. The infertility can happen if you do actually get pregnant with your IUD. This can also lead to ectopic pregnancies, which can be life threatening. This is why I decided against any IUD. You chance of getting pregnant is slim, but if you do it is cause for alarm. I just don't think that is worth it to me. However, that is just my opinion.

I know a lady who had one that was put into her arm and it broke. She ended up with one really nasty bruise that was mushy. Then of course, those hormones were release inside of her body and this messed her all up.

i heard about what happened, but had also heard the research was debunked, something about the IUDs they were using were the wrong kind... i dont really remember.

i read alot of horror stories, which is why it took me so long (2 yrs) to decide to do it. i figured the benefits outweighed the risk, so i decided to try it out. if it didnt work out, at least i could know that was no longer an option for me, BC-wise.

Interesting posts...thanks. I have paraguard. Had no problems with insertion. Went so easy the Dr was even surprised. I am now feeling 'funny' though. Have been back to the Dr a few times. Have had one UTI since I got it inserted which is not usually like me. And have been having dizziness and other strange feelings up and down spine. Not sure what is going on and in the process of getting more testing but I am thinking of getting it taken out just cuz I feel so strange. It is copper so I shouldn't really be having any problems but it is the only thing that has changed recently. I just got it a few months ago. My dr has reassured me that it is fine. It is as effective as a tubal and safe...anyone else have weird feelings. I did read the one post about feeling much better when it was removed and now I am thinking about it. I haven't used birth control for the last 12 years and had planned pregnancies but now we are done having kids so I feel I need something.

i haven't read about spine issues - but if i were you i'd do more research -there are alot of forums on the subject. sounds like cause for alarm to me. whether it's the IUD or not.

i currently have only missed 1 more day of work due to murderous cramps, and the bleeding stopped after 3 weeks of spotting, and a 2-day period. i really dislike that it messed with my period - a regular, healthy menstrual cycle is really important... and why the fuck is this little bit of copper screwing with my cycle, anyway? makes me wrinkle my nose a bit... stil...

ANYTHING. just about. really anything. is better than having kids. for me.

okay so really weird update:

well, two updates. let's start with the less weird instance.
i have one partner with a huge, long fat cock who can't feel the strings in me at all when we fuck. and one with an average sized cock who complains to no end about the strings, and has asked me to go get them cut. now, guy no. 2 IS a big baby, to be frank, but.... guy no. 1 says he has only felt them 1ce, and that time we continued fucking, only to have him end up with a big raw spot on his dick that caused him to be out of commission for 2 days. ouch!

anyone else experienced this?

so... in lieu of update 1 i went fishing for the strings. anytime i'd tried to 'move' them when guy no. 2 was complaining, they felt like they'd knotted themselves up together and were lying in a bit of a clump in there. today i found a weird-feeling ball on the end of one string and managed to painstakingly bit by bit pull it out. it was a clump of fibers, akin to Q-tip cotton, grey and lumped together.

thing is, I don't use tampons. the only things that go in my vagina are silicone dildos who are inspected before insertion, rinsed if need be (lint'gatherers), penises, and the occasional hand. i can't really figure how any of those would have enough lint on them to gather there... it was a lump about 2cm by 1 cm.

what the hell?

i'm going to be talking to Planned Parenthood about this. i almost wonder if it wasnt something that was there upon insertion. its really weirding me out though.

Wow your story sounds EXACTLY how mine went, i came in at the end of my period and they had to dilate me, it was the most awful thing and exactly like you described like "that's a place i shouldn't feel poking!" I did the labor breathing too, after insertion i had to lay there and just wait for it to subside, i was tender for over a week and my first period with my copper IUD was terrible, i felt the same where I thought that my body was trying to push the IUD out, i sat in the car feeling waves of intense cramping that left me with labor breathing and gripping the door handle for dear life. For me it was more than 200 dollars but 600 taken out of my base benefit so i was worried about it coming out. But i love it and after my second period i felt fine. It does offer the best peace of mind since after the first period it's unlikely to expel itself.
