Would you trust condoms from the Dollar Store?

Contributor: ToyGeek ToyGeek
I'm baffled to even discover they carry them, and considering the track record of most products found in the Dollar Store, I'm a little concerned. But I'm even more concerned by this post on the Passive Aggressive Notes blog:

I'd trust them about as much as the batteries and rubber gloves.

Condoms are regulated by the FDA: both Trojan and (some $ store brand) have to pass the same tests to be marketed. As long as it met FDA requirements and was before the expiration date, yep, I sure would.

Yeah, I'd check the expiration and what country they were made in.

I know that there are regulations and everything but I wouldn't do it.
And before anyone asks, no I wouldn't buy the pregnancy tests at the dollar store either.

I like the comment about picking up the pregnancy test kits, too, while there. I think they're cheaper than the condoms.

Of course it had to be local to me *snort*. That's such an Ohioan thing to do.

BUT, I will say that the preg tests there are among the most sensitive on the market, including those expensive twenty dollar ones. They can most definitely tell you way earlier. Just more of a pain because you still have to pee in a cup for them (yes, I've used them!) vs. just peeing on the test itself like expensive brands.

An excellent point about the throwback technology. There are actually things I buy from the Dollar Store because everyone else has moved on to a "better" version, although I haven't had need of a pregnancy test. Good to know!

I was just going to say all this. They cannot sell something that doesn't pass approval. At least they are available there and at a cheaper cost. It will help those who cannot afford the big name brands stay clean and away from unwanted pregnancy

I would use them to cover my toys when sharing or playing with girls, but for PiV sex- no way in hell.

Or as much as the pregnancy tests lol.

I know they are regulated but so are a lot of things by the FDA that are not up to snuff still or have mistakes...cough-beef or processed food with cancer causing preservatives. I'd pay more for better quality.

Good point - some protection is better than no protection.

Hey! I buy batteries at the dollar store. In electronics, they suck. In vibes? They last as long as any other, really.

And? $1 five packs of watch batteries. Win win!

Honestly, I probably would if I needed to. I've been sticking to buying in bulk online cuz it saves money and I can try a whole bunch of different brands at once. I've got no problems with the pregnancy tests, batteries, or rubber gloves either, lol. I've seen some things online (I know, never trust everything you read online) but some site I was on broke down the differences between all the different pregnancy tests out on the market and the ones at the dollar store (provided they're not expired) are just as good as the ones from the big stores. I think the only difference is really that the dollar store ones you have to pee in a cup and use the dropper where the ones from the bigger stores let you just pee on a stick.

It would depend on the brand or country it was made in. I have gotten a vibrating ring that came with a condom off a deal web site that operates in China. The condom was definitely way too small. I prefer to just buy name brand ones off of amazon.com. I've been getting 36 packs of Durex condoms for about $3-4 for the whole package.

I've never seen condoms sold in a Dollar store, hmmm. One Christmas I got a dollar store pregnancy test in a gag gift bag from a friend and everyone laughed, but little did they know that I definitely used it a couple months later when I had a pregnancy paranoia moment, haha. It came up negative and that was the truth, so I've got no complaints there

I don't think I would.. I know they're regulated and all but like others have said I would pay more for quality!

if they are a name brand i would, but if it was some funky off brand probably not.

hmmmmmm id probably buy a pack blow em up and fill em with water for a test, as always you should always look at the expiration date. If nothing happens use them.

I would not trust a dollar store condom! There is probably a reason they cost one dollar and I am not willing to risk unplanned pregnancy to save four dollars on a box of condoms.

There are some things you should always buy discount, there are some things you should never buy discount. Contraception in any form is one of them.

There are so many places to get free quality condoms. Why even play with something like that?

He: Are they a dollar each or a dollar per pack?

She: That's basically a "no." $1/pack would be weird, but I guess PP gives them out for free and $1 each seems right for what we paid.

Yeah, those ones in the picture are super skeevy looking. But if they were mainstream brands, and it was just one condom for 1 dollar, then I probably would. My dollar store doesn't sell condoms, and I've always thought it was ironic that they sold pregnancy tests, but not condoms.

Next time I think I will get a pregnancy test, when I first saw those I was completely shocked and we asked ourselves if they worked. Next time I will get one and have my pregnant friend try it out, hey I would rather pay $1 fr those and not $15, not sure about the condoms.

I would definitely buy them and use them and trust them.

That is, if I weren't allergic to latex.

But thanks for the info on their pregnancy tests. I hate going to the drugstore and spending like $20 for one test. The dollar store (99 cent store, whatever) does have some good, cheap items.

Especially candy. My sweet tooth rejoices along with my wallet.
