Well said. It can be valuable for anyone and it doesn't have stigma.

Yes. I didn't have any bad emotional trauma or anything, I just have depression, an anxiety disorder, traumatic brain injury, and a handful of other diagnoses that don't really fit. I've been seing a shrink and being medicated since I was 12. Which was happened to be right after the head injury, go figure. The frontal lobe is the part of your brain regulates your emotions and I happened to get hit right in the temple.

I used to but now I self medicate with marijuana and am working on fixing my anxiety myself.

Nobody can tell me how to fix my brain, nobody can tell me what I REALLY need to do.

Of course this doesn't apply to everyone, some people prefer to see professional help and that's totally fine. I just personally don't prefer it.

I couldn't agree more.

I see both a general therapist and a psychiatrist. They refuse to put a label on me but are willing to continue to see me.

I see a shrink as needed. Sometimes I just really need to talk about things that I can't expect my friends to put up with. Sometimes I'm in a really bad place. Sometimes I don't see him for months though.

I used to struggle with depression and saw a number of psychologists and psychiatrists over about a ten year period. In my experience, the psychiatrists just wanted to quickly prescribe some drug and move on the next cash cow, and I didn't find the drugs helpful. I enjoyed talk therapy; I learned a lot about myself, although I never actually learned how to be a happy, well individual.

Until one psychologist introduced me to cognitive behavioral therapy, which works on the premise that our thoughts, emotions and behaviors are all connected, and that it's possible to positively change all three by modifying any one of them. Since then, I've been mindful of my "internal dialogue" and emotions, and haven't had any issues with depression.

I've considered it, but then again, talking things out is better for me with my husband, friends, my cat.
