Men's Pubic Hair - On the shaft of the penis?

Contributor: toxie m toxie m
This is sort of a two-part question. My boyfriend is a man of average hairiness, but he has something I've never encountered before: pubic hair that grows on the shaft of his penis, to about halfway up. It's not tons, but definitely some. My first question is: how common is this? Do many men grow hair there? I'm polling both men and people with male partners - do you have this or have you encountered it?

If yes, do you do anything about it? I request that my boyfriend shave it before I go down on him because it's way more enjoyable for me when it's smooth. But of course with shaving comes stubble. After we had sex last my vagina became very irritated, and I suspect it was because he'd shaved a couple days prior. Ow. Does anyone have any experience dealing with this? Any suggestions?

I've never known a guy that had hair on the shaft, but I suppose anything is possible. Honestly, I don't even know what could be done about it beyond having. The penis seems like it would be too sensitive to use wax or depilatory cream on it. If there are lot of hairs, it wouldn't be practical to pluck them with tweezers either.

There is a small amount of hair on the bottom inch or so - I shave it with the rest.

Yeah, I've encountered a few where it goes up to about an inch on the shaft.

He has a few (Maybe 20?) little hairs, but not enough for it to really be noticeable!

I'm not sure how common it is. My first partner didn't have any hair on the shaft, but also didn't have any on his balls and just a small patch above his penis. My current bf has a lot more pubic hair, on his balls and a little bit on the shaft. I'd say it goes up about half an inch. He shaves it. That last little bit of his penis doesn't always get inside me depending on the position. I've noticed it the most when I'm on top since that's usually when we go the deepest. Sometimes the stubble does irritate my vaginal opening. I'm really sensitive there and can't use textured toys or condoms. I also only notice the hair when we're not using condoms, and since we're back to using them it hasn't been a problem lately.

I have never run into this, but I don't think it's that uncommon.

If it were me, the stubble at the base, and then touching either the most sensitive part of my vagina or mouth, would be worse than a few hairs.

I shave my junk, as a woman, and I know I can have stubble only 12 hours after shaving. I can't imagine it will be easy for him to keep it smooth as you'd like it without hurting himself.

Hair, once it has grown out, isn't rough, it's soft. Maybe just talk to him about letting it grow in, and then at least you'll have soft hair there instead of constant stubble.

His hair grows pretty fast, so I've definitely tried it both ways. Grown-out is less irritating vaginally, but less appetizing orally. It feels amazing freshly shaved, orally AND vaginally. I wish there was a magical way to keep it so smooth, but I suppose there probably isn't. Ah well.

i've seen soft hair just slightly creeping up the base but no more. i suggest you let him grow it out, no more cactus on your gentle lady bits! and a stray hair here or there will happen whether it's on his balls or his shaft... just sexily pick it from your mouth. or unsexily.

Would it be possible to have permanent laser hair removal done on such a sensitive part of one's anatomy?

Wow, I've actually never even heard of that, but I can see how it could cause you discomfort. My partner only has it on the base and I've never seen any men with hair on the shaft. Is it like a patch or just a few stray hairs scattered around? I doubt most men would go for this, but I have to suggest... waxing or plucking? It would cut down immensely on your discomfort and shaving wont unless you have intercourse immediately after he shaves. Plucking and waxing isn't worse for a man than a woman. In fact the inner labia are far, far more sensitive and easy to tear than a penis. When I was the inner parts of the outside labia it usually tears the layer of skin off and bleeds so I try to pluck those when I can. It will sting to pluck a penis shaft hair, but it's not horrible. The idea is more terrifying than the actual thing. He can also pluck or wax those and then use a hair inhibitor. That is what I've been doing for several months now and it will eventually stop the growth permanantly. But with any inhibitor you have to remove the entire hair shaft for it to work.

I've encountered some random ones. Nothing a pair of tweezers won't take care of, though.

You learn something new everyday. I had no idea hair could grow on the shaft. My boyfried does not have any hair on the shaft at all. I would recommend not shaving. If shaving is irrataing your vagina in anyway, I would tell him not to shave. Your kind of stuck between a rock and hard place. Its either shave and risk discomfort, or don't shave and make oral sex not so good for you. I would talk to a doctor about this one. Although, it is not a medical problem. There still has to be some kind of middle ground.

It's stray hairs scattered around, more closer to the base but a random selection goes a few inches up. I feel like plucking would be the best way but have a gut feeling that that suggestion would not be well-taken, haha. I've plucked my pubic hair in moments of serious boredom/OCD and it hurt but yeah, it wasn't awful. Maybe I'll mention it as a half-joke and see how he reacts. Thanks!

Well, if it's so bad he could try lazering or electrocuting the little buggers (lazer and electrolisis are fairly permanent hair removal methods), but he'd have to put up with some discomfort during the process... not to mention, it isn't cheap.

I'm in the process of using IPL to get rid of my pubes, and let me tell you, it's not pleasant. I'm also doing my armpits, and I can barely feel it there, but when it comes to my labia... ho boy. I don't get burned, but it sure does feel like it.

Hubby has some hair on his shaft, not much, and it's really fine so he tweezes them. I cringed the first time I saw him do it, but he said it doesn't hurt. He said it stings a little bit but not much.

UPDATE: I talked it over with my man and he is totally open to tweezing so long as I'm there to help him and be his fluffer so that he stays hard and the skin stays tight and easier to work with for tweezing. Hurray! I'll let ya'll know how it goes

Oh Christ! Why would you torture your poor man like that? Just have him shave it. And if the stubble bothers you, just let it grow.

That's great news! I have plucked stray pubes as well, and while it is not pleasurable, it really isn't all that bad. Hopefully it will go ok for him and won't be too painful - maybe all your fluffing will help it feel better.

My man does not have hair growing on his shaft, but I have heard of this before. It's not that uncommon.

Good luck! I can definitely see where it could cause some discomfort issues for you.

He said he actually tried plucking them before with his ex (I had no idea or I would've asked sooner), but she was uninterested in helping him and the sex wasn't nearly interesting enough for him to do it much on his own. So, he's tried it before and doesn't mind trying it again now that he's with someone willing to be more involved in the process. Apparently it's not really all that bad, pain-wise.

My husband has some hair that goes probably a fourth of the way up or so. He shaves his pubic hair for me most of the time, so I don't really have to worry about it. A few times I've had the same problem as you with the irritation when the stubble starts to grow back, but it hasn't happened enough that I felt the need to be more active about it.

Since you're willing to help with the tweezing, I think that might be a good route to go. It sounds like something that would hurt like crazy, but I've done it for my husband a few times and he also said it doesn't hurt as long as you at least sort of know what you're doing and have a good pair of tweezers.

My boyfriend has just a few stray hairs on his penis, but only for maybe an inch of the way up. It's not enough to cause a problem or be noticeable during sex or a blowjob, so I don't make him shave or anything.
