I look for speed first and then pick one with the safest material

Mostly it's a combination of factors - if an otherwise great toy for a great price has a less safe material I might still go for it, but it would be a definite deterrent.

Power and safety are the most important factors to me. Design and material are also things I weigh in my purchases.

My wife is allergic to some materials so that is most important

Reviews, price, how durable it seems, functionality (multiple use possibilities? attachments?), materials (hard or soft, and I avoid the sticky materials).

Material safety, how the material feels, then noise.

I wouldn't want a toy I'd have to put condoms over, at least, and wouldn't want one that felt unpleasant to the touch.
