I find myself fascinated by this post and I think the good people who have replied all provide very helpful information. I have a few thoughts that many folks here might not agree with and perhaps this will open a can of worms but here goes....Also, I'm a guy so you and the other ladies with thoughts about this will likely take my thoughts with a grain of salt.
My wife and I have several toys - including vibrators and dildos of various shapes and sizes. We have a lot of fun with them and have become more and more adventurous as our relationship has grown over the years. Having said that (and I consulted my wife before beginning this), I believe there's something to be said for your first true "penetration" experience to be with an actual human being whom you're in a caring relationship with. No toy on planet earth (again this is my opinion so be gentle with me friends) can compare to the feeling of becoming part of another person whom you deeply care about - so the notion of "preparing" for when you're with someone for the first time is confusing to me - on many levels, including emotional ones, it's really apples and oranges.
Now...I tread lightly here...I do not know your sexual orientation so my words may be a completely moot point, in which case there's been some excellent advice given here. However, if your plan is to one day be in a committed relationship with a man then I humbly submit my thoughts for your consideration. There will be plenty of time to bring all sorts of fun toys into the mix after you've had that initial connection with someone.
Ultimately the choice is yours and I respect your decision to reach out to the good folks that frequent this site for advice and consideration.
