Ever have an editor botch your review?

Contributor: jc123 jc123
I've had editors make stylistic changes to some of my reviews, and I've had editors change a word or two here and there. But I recently had the experience of an editor changing a word so it had the wrong meaning (in a there/their situation), and also changing my (correct) grammar to make my sentences really awkward. I went in and changed the misspelling because that kind of thing REALLY bothers me, but I didn't correct the grammar changes yet. Part of me hopes other people catch it and vote the editor down, but the other part of me is dying inside because I think people probably think I write like that.

Glad this hasn't happened to me! My mentor/editor seems to check most for content than grammar/spelling, but that may be because I'm a Creative Writing major, haha.

Wow sorry that happened, never noticed it before but I sure will keep my eye out. Sounds like I will be putting what I write in Microsoft word from now on so I can keep a eye on that.

Never happened because I've never had my reviews edited. Aside from when I first started reviewing years ago, of course...

I haven't had anything CHANGED like that by an editor but I have done reviews when I'm tired and not catching my mistakes. I have waited until they were published and read back over them and have caught MY mistakes that THEY didn't. For example, I had wrote and twice. Some people don't really read the, the just "edit" them for the points which sucks because there are people that want to edit and actually do it RIGHT and they don't get to or have to wait forever . I would fix it then just give them a crappy vote. If you continue to get the same person doing this then I would say something to whoever is in charge of the review program. Sorry, I'm still a bit new and I don't know who that is but I'm sure someone could tell you.

Yea I would not like that either but once I found a mistake on a review that the editor didn't catch but It was all good! I hate reading reviews that have words in the wong content or have mispelled words! Or the wrong meanings!

I've never had it happen but, if I did, I'd just fix it and move on. That is, unless it's not the first time. If it happens more than once, I'd say something.

I'd like to note that editors aren't perfect, and that we do make mistakes occasionally. For the most part, the editing program does work, but like I said, we don't catch all errors, and if you contact us, we'll fix it for you. If it's a persistent problem, contact an Admin.

I know most of the editors that are in the current cycle, and none them qualify as "point farmers," which is what you accused your editor(s) of. So thanks for that. Yes, a lot, if not all, of the editors do like the bonus points, which I think is a great motivation. It helps Eden provide more clear reviews and takes a huge workload off of Admin's hands.

If you feel like you would be a qualified editor, then submit a request and Sammi will get back to you. You need to understand that you're not the only one that wants to be an editor and you are competing against members with either higher ranks or have a longer history with Eden. I waited about six months before I became an editor, so sometimes you just need to learn to wait your turn.

My problem is, I can't find any difference after my review went through the editor, and I was dead curious to know if there were any mistakes. I PMed the editor, nicely asking her to let me know if there were any errors on my review, and she never gave me a reply, I think that was kind of rude!

I've had that happen a few times before. It does seem like some people don't even bother to read the reviews. There were times when I submitted fairly long reviews and then found they were published within just a minute or two of me submitting them. Absolutely no time for an editor to have actually bothered reading through it.

It's really frustrating. I mean, I try to catch my own mistakes, but... a person shouldn't have the job as editor if they're just doing it for the points.

OP -- I haven't had it happen where an editor completely changed the meaning of my review. At least... as far as I've noticed. Now I need to go read back through my old reviews.

That would frustrate me, too. I always like to know if I made any errors, but I find that most editors don't send notes telling you what they changed.

Where did I ever say "all" editors? Oh, I didn't! SOME and ALL have two completely different meanings. I had the SAME person do it twice but I didn't know I could do anything about it. Thanks.

The only changes that were ever made to mine were punctuation. I won't hesitate to say my punctuation has always been funky when it comes to commas, colons, and semi-colons.

I'd suggest contacting the editor, too. Everyone has "durrr" moments now and then (obviously, or else we wouldn't need editors!) so a quick "Hi, I noticed you changed xxx in my review to yyy. I think xxx was correct. Are you sure about that change?" would be an easy way to inquire. That way if you are correct, the editor has a heads-up on what they missed. If it turns out there was a reason for the change, you'll know for the future.

On the last review I ever wrote that had to be reviewed, my editor changed a LOT of stuff. But she messaged me to let me know exactly what she changed and why, and was open to changing it back if I felt she was wrong or wanted it to read in a certain voice. She was very helpful in helping me to understand what was wrong with my own grammar and now I write more successful reviews because of it ^_^

You're lucky to have such a courteous editor, hope you'll follow her footsteps and treat future new reviewers the same way, if you happen to become an editor yourself!

It is not part of an editor's responsibilities to notify you of changes made. If an editor did provide that information, great. However, understand that it is done as a courtesy and not a requirement. If you want to learn more specifically what mistakes you might be making, a mentor may be more appropriate.

I've never had this happen because I've never had to have reviews aside from Descriptive Reviews edited.

It's an editors job to correct grammar, and nothing else. If they're really changing the meaning of what you're saying or changing things that are correct to be something that's not correct, please do let Sammi know.

I've never had a review edited, except for Descriptive Reviews, either. (DRs are different than regular reviews, as they are mostly to describe the product for the Product Page and usually contain little personal information and need to fit a specific format etc.) I've been here since before the editing program.

But, I do honestly think that the person being edited probably shouldn't be voting on how their review was edited. Some people get angry if you change improper spelling, poor syntax, bad punctuation etc. Although most people are completely fine with it. I've seen a few use their vote to retaliate against an editor who had to deal with a barely readable review, though.

Funny that some are published only minutes after getting the review to edit. I took my time with reviews while editing, so as not to miss anything, and sometimes had people messaging me only hours after I got the review asking when it was going to be published.
