Question about students getting voted to advanced

That is correct. That is why I do not bother voting any longer - they'll all get voted in anyway, so my vote does not matter.

I feel, sometimes overly picky when it comes to voting people in. Most of the time, I will not vote for someone unless I feel like their reviews are well written and can be considered at least USEFUL. It kills me to see people who are voted below useful and ratings below a 4 advanced when they would be much better off in the mentor program.

Ditto. I have only voted for one person I think. It pisses me off though when people message me and request that I vote for them. I ignore those requests completely!

I vote on the ones that I see have potential, but I usually message them about taking a class with a mentor. I have NEVER gotten a request for a vote up! That's just presumptuous and audacious!

Just. Happened. To me. Kinda shitty because I seem to be having one hell of a time getting students in the first place (see rant here: link)

Also, what if this happens and the student, in your opinion, is not ready? Would you simply cancel the class or not pass them? Just wondering, as I expect this to happen often.

I feel the same way. Few reviewers have the chops after only two reviews to be Advanced, in my book. It seems like a few people vote for every person who applied for advanced. While MANY new reviewers have promise and a few are already good writers, I've seen awful reviews voted for by the same people over and over.

I don't get it. (Are there points for voting for someone into the Advanced Reviewer category? I don't think there should be, really.)

I didn't take the Mentor Program (I've been writing for decades) but I DID do 8 reviews and was on Eden for about 2 months before I asked to be upgraded. I just didn't feel like I knew enough about the review process before then.

I think the decision would be totally up to you. Personally, I would continue to work with them if they still needed the assistance. Although it's a lot of work, I do enjoy helping others. To me, the $25 is more of a bonus than a payment because I feel like it generally takes more work than the GC compensates. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to get it, but I also feel like I cold earn $25 in a lot easier ways. So I guess my answer would be, do it if you enjoy helping others, don't do it if your primary motivation is the GC.

Well yes, if the student wants to continue. But I meant if they don't want to continue the class.

Sorry, I totally misunderstood your original question. If the student no longer wants to continue the class, you have no obligation to force them to continue. In fact, they can simply cancel the class on their own.

I hate to beat a dead horse here, but this thread has some good points in it that haven't been handled. I'm still extremely frustrated at this.

Do reviewers have a way of cancelling an upgrade request once it's submitted?

Why yes I have lol. For the volume of students that I have had, it sounds like I have not seen it as much as some of you who have reviewed less.

October especially was a bad month which is when I believe the system was changed somehow ... more
If my mentor had explained it to me, I would not have asked.to be voted up. I had no idea that I would get advanced after the class, so once my 2nd review was published, I asked to be voted up, cause I thought I had to :/ I feel bad about it

Yeah, I think there's a lack of clarity on the program. I have students who have no idea what an upgrade request is, or what an advanced reviewer is. I kinda just wish that students weren't allowed to submit one while they were in class because it's really pointless.

Mentors need to also be aware and take a proactive approach to the problem. When I accept a student, I send a message that includes a bunch of information and mentions that they will become an Advanced Reviewer upon graduation and to please not apply for the community vote as it would deny me the gift card.

I do that, as well, but sometimes students don't listen.

You can tell them that doing so will result in cancelling the class. That's what I've told my students and I haven't had to do it yet, but other people have.
